This is my faction leader. The beginning of his reign he was quelling Gaulish invasions into the Italian Penninsula and then sat in his capital until he and his two brothers were in their late 50's. I brought them all together for a reunion and they trooped North to take out the Gaulish Faction leader. His two brothers died from old age on the march through the Northlands. His wife died on the return journey. He's the Best General I've yet had in RTW. Post yours. Yeah I had to use a photo editing program to get all the traits/retinue able to be viewed in one screeen.

I lost a great general the other day. He had a load of decent traits, and a ton of command stars. He had never lost a battle. Since he was in his late 20's I decided I'd make him the heir once he'd finished mopping up Armania. So I'm in my final battle in the great northern offensive, to defeat the last enemy held stronghold.
I form up my typical Seleucid battle line, with a huge wall of pikes surrounding my cavalry, archers, general... and one unit of scythed chariots. The enemy charges, fails to break my pikes so I decide to charge the enemy with my cavalry and chariots to finish them off. Instantly the chariots go beserk within my lines, killing scores of men, crashing through the back of my pikes, and also killing my uber general within a second. My jaw dropped to the ground, and stayed there for about five minutes.

Woohoo! Maxed out. That's impressive.
Do you find that a general's traits tend to conform to character? I haven't noticed this before - they always seemed to be assigned randomly, but in 1.2 I notice that the bad guys seem to get worse and the good guys better, which would be a change very much for the better IMO.
The one thing I really don't like about character traits is that not all the effects are summarized. You only get a summary of the character's command, influence and management - and even then, there is no way to show if any of these stats are negative. Morale doesn't get summarized at all, and I think there are one or two other characteristics that don't get summarized. I wish they would change that. What does it add to the game to make the player carefully check through the traits to see the total effect? Nothing but tedium.
And BTW I also wish they would change the unit stat page so you can view the current morale level of a unit. You can view all the other stats, why not morale for goodness' sake?

My best general was a greek general, Dionysius. When most people start a greek cities game, they usually abandon Syracuse, but not me. Dionysius repelled twenty sieges brought on me by the Scipii and Carthaginians. In the end his command stars were as high as possible. Once the scipii were defeated and thrown off Sicily, i went on to defeat the Carthaginian scum, securing the island as a greek naval base for years to come. And i managed to do all this with the same troops, never losing a unit, but this was because i had run out of money. Once he reached sixty, i put him on a boat home to Sparta, were he continued the fight to kick the Brutii out of the greek homelands until his death, aged 74.
Hail Dionysius, king of Sparta!!!

True. He actually was only on campaign for 5 years out of his reign. The rest of the time he was cooped up in the Capital dictating the decisions of his Generals on the Gaulish front, moving his faction's status in the Senate up slowly and learning. I was pleasantly surprised that you can actually have a leader that does this, doesn't need combat, and doesn't get any glaringly negative traits for just sitting at home most of the time.
