i would just like to know peoples opinions on using cheats in RTW whether for actually cheating or to just change the gaming experience.

i am of the opinion that the RTW cheating set up should be changed as using cheats in the game is no different from modding, but there is no better feeling than that of having just beaten the game with out cheating on long campain. I my self don't cheat because it would reduce that satisfaction of winning, but i think we should be at least given the option if just to use the 'making elephants bigger cheat'. ~D

I don't really agree with people cheating to make it so they can complete the campaign or get themselves out of a desperate situation, but if people want to use the cheat commands to change the game world to add a challenge or make more appealing, they should be able to. I wonder if there is some switch that is required to have unlimited use of the console commands? For example, if my campaign is becoming boring and the other factions are struggling, it would be nice to be able to boost their cities in size, technology and garrison strength, just to add a bit of interest.

I've never enjoyed cheating, but I don't care if other people do... as long as it doesn't affect me.

i have to admit, with MTW .deadringer. & .worksundays. came in handy, only on non serious campaigns, with rome, after my initial few campaigns i gave myself some extra cash in the old descr_strat side of things, Thats the case with all my games, finish them honestly 1st then cheat, or at least speed things up a little, although just now im not cheating at all :balloon2:

I'm of the opinion that you should play a full game without cheats, and then and only then use cheats. Btw, does anyone know how to make the oliphaunt cheat actually work? I can't use it, and i really want to so i can see if they look as cool as people say they are.

you have to select a settlement or a army with a vacant spot and then use the cheat

just seen this:

https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=38671

its the Rome Total War Cheat Unlocker, and would solve the issues with cheating but has its drawbacks.

1. you need a game crack to make it work
2. you need the Microsoft .NET runtimes which i've heard leave your computer open to attack from viruses ans spyware

what we need is a simpler solution which doesn't need these things but sadly i don't have the knowledge to do it

I despise that cheat unlocker. I downloaded microsoft .NET, and like you said, it left the computer open to viruses. My computer nearly died, the poor thing!!

Is there not just some kind of developer switch we can use like for MTW? Perhaps CA will let us know one day. Preferably one day soon.

My philosophy on cheating is such. Cheating against the AI is right even ethical. Cheating against a human opponent(s) is wrong and proves that you are not a real man/woman.

Yup the Comp cheats against you, so sometimes you gotta stick it to the man. But not much.

I totally agree with you, against the comp cheat all you like, but cheat in multiplay and you can burn in hell or what ever your religon states

Very funny. I learnt not to visit porn sites on my own comp after a bad experience involving one of my friends and a very large phone bill....he racked up £48 worth of bills from visiting porn sites. When his parents asked him about it, he just blamed it on a friend that he didn't like very much.

Pray tell, but would fiddling around with the game files so that you start off with 100 million be classified as cheating?

I can't stand not seeing what is happening in the world, ever since MTW. I will always have fog turned of. Using any more cheats is boring, really.

I remember my boss played Empire Earth back when it was a new game. I lost all respect for him when he said:

"My favourite thing to do is to type in the cheats and build a massive army and crush the computer."

I looked at him, grimaced, and changed the subject. I just don't understand how the most fun thing someone can enjoy is to not be challenged at all... but we all play games for different reasons so I didn't make too much about it.
