View Full Version : Rebels, Rebels, Everywhere

playing a new Germans campaign, (Hard/Hard) there are Rebel forces everywhere, which means i have to fight Rebels all the time (just about every turn) while defending from Britons and Gauls at the same time.
it's made the game a lot more interresting, and every so often a rebel army of six to eight units will pop up and stuff up my trade by parking themselves on my roads. it's annoying and cool at the same time.
anyone else notice the large number of Rebel armies popping up? and they rarely have generals with them, which means i can't bribe them at all...
Yesiree. The more numerous and fiestier rebel feature was one of the cool things I was most looking forward to from this patch. Success. And the rebel "faction" color is the best. All units look good in beige. ~:)

You can bribe armies without a leader and even with the increase in cost with v1.2 it's still my prefered method of getting rid of the rebels.
It does seem as though they're more frequent post-patch or perhaps it's just that I'm having to fight more of them since the cost issue does limit my bribing.
Overall, the changes to the rebels makes them more fun, but it does get annoying at times. I wish the rebel generation would just be a bit smarter and not have situations like having a stack with 2 peasants and a warband appear right next to my main troop marshalling city. The rebels bolted after the first volley of pila - my PC switching from the campaign to the tactical engine took longer than the battle itself!
This may sound like a ridiculous question :embarassed: but -
Do the rebels/enemy stacks have to be ON a road to disrupt trade, or just somewhere in the region ?
Am I storing up trouble just letting some rebel armies hide in mountain passes with no roads or are they just worth ignoring ?
Some of my regions simply aren't making enough money and this is the last thing I can think of

I think they just have to be in your province - anywhere - to disrupt trade. Although the closer they are to your town the more cash they disrupt.
Ah ha !!
Now that explains a LOT.
Heh, heh: rebel bashing will now commence :charge:
If they aren't in a important/rich province and are instead somewhere in the middle of nowhere, I let them sit there unless I have a diplomat and enough cash to bribe them. Otherwise they aren't really worth the bother. However, judging by the frequency they are popping up at, I am seriously dreading the ramifications this may have on any Scythian Campaign I might endeavor in the future...

yes bribing has become way more expensive. a family member with army was 30.000 before the patch and now 400.000

Its ridiculous how expensive it is now, im offering bribes to rebel armies that consist of 2 units of town militia, 1 unit of naked fanatics and 1 unit of barbarian cavalry and they want 12000 denarii! for that! it means i have to constantly fight crap rebel armies and fight them personally as the auto for battles is so dumb id lose hundreds of men otherwise.
Very annoying and unnecessary

Does anyone know what causes rebels to appear? Is it related to the happiness/weath/culture of a province or just random? More importantly, is there a way to prevent them from spawning in the first place?

Yeah, it's starting to annoy me too. Make good practice for my new armies on the way to the front though.

has anyone seen a rebel army try to take a city yet? i heard that some might try to do that.
i've had a rebel army in the red outside my city, but they hadn't besieged my city though.
and how does the rebel faction as a whole use the money they make off their own cities and disruptions of factions' trading? do they have the ability to recruit mercenaries anywhere on the map? without a general?

From my test on 1.0 for my Economics Guide, they only affect land trade when they sit on the road. However, they affect sea trade no matter where they are so long as they are in the province.
I'm currently doing new stuff and updates for 1.2. However, I'm still stuck at calculating the exact trades since the values doesn't make sense. There were some patterns i've noted in 1.0 but i'll be redoing the tests for 1.2. ~:)
I lost Thapus to a rebel army on turn 4. :embarassed:
That's why GIRRLLSSS shouldn't be geneerraalllssssss. Nyaaaaaaaaaaaa. :tongue3:

Hey now. We're doing just fine. I just took 17 provinces by 251 BC as Armenia.
:kiss2:
Don't worry, Alicia, you're not completely alone. ~:)
Yes she is... after I KILL you... muahahahahaha
Im getting taught some lessons on overextending as julii with big rebel stacks at ariminum.... The barbarian hordes definately force you to be more circumspect with border expansion, particularly when your manna screwed with the julii!
On the whole I think I like it. ~

You can dramatically reduce rebels in your terrority though by building and manning forts on all the roads that lead to your cities. I started a non-serious campaign with bucketloads of cash as I was testing out changes and what not, and had placed several forts guarding bridges and passes into my terrority. There were rebels still, but these were ones that had been there for years. After I killed them, I haven't seen any pop up for ages. They were relentless beforehand. Of course, there may be some hiding in ambush, but neither my forces, nor my enemy have bumped into them yet. Unfortunately its quite expensive building the forts and manning them. I'm not sure if it makes a difference if there is just 10 peasants in the fort, or 1600 chosen axemen either. If you toggle fog of war on via the console, you'll see that the poor AI struggles with rebels too. Early on many factions continuously get beaten back by the rebels. But it's their own fault: typically they send 2 units in, lose, then send in another 2 - and lose again!
So is there a direct correlation between having a fort on the map and the incidence of rebels ?
I suppose that would make sense, I'll have to give it a go and see what happens.

I like to use them to ramp up those 16 year old gouvenators. I sometimes keep a kid in the area where they seem to show up and just go around stomping rebels. You end up with a cantadate for heir real fast.
