Nice and ordered list of questions:
* 1 honour gives unit +1 attack/+1 defense/+2 morale?
* does both defense and armour count against missile fire?
* does the missile attack increase with honour/weapon upgrades, or do they only count in hth combat?
Good questions sir! Ones I have been pondering myself! I tried looking through the Shogun folder to see where this info is held, but alas I could not find it.
Early though I read that getting a Swordsmith (+1 weapons) will upgrade hand to hand weapons only, so Archers will be not be more deadly with their bows. I don't really think this is historically accurate as arrow tips were made from sword steel, so with improved weapons you should get better quality arrow heads (better armour penetration?).

1. Yes.
2. Only armor counts against missile fire, and is only really useful against arrows not guns.
3. Honor upgrades add a little bit to accuracy, only noticable in guns due to their low base accuracy. Weapon upgrades only count in head to head.
So the Armour and Defence statistics are seperate? Interesting...

Realize that I have limited CPU capacity, and I'm not speaking about my computer, but here's how I understand it:
When units fight the game engine compares one unit's (the attacker) attack rating (base plus attack bonus plus modifiers) to the enemy's defense rating (base plus defense plus modifiers), then in the next microsecond swtiches and compares the defender's attack score against the attacker's defense score. The difference between scores determines the rate of kill.
Armor is used to determine the effect of missiles.
When you upgrade armor you add +1 to armor and +1 to defense.
Weapons bonus affects melee combat. When you upgrade weapons you add +1 to attack.
Charge Bonus never changes for a unit.
So there's Honor, Morale, Attack, Defense, Charge, Armor.

Awesome work, Ichi. So after Honour then, I guess the best thing you can get for Ashigaru tactics is a palace, which I presume gives +1 Morale.

The palace strikes me as too expensive for little benefit. By the time you upgrade the province to churn out 3 honor Ashis, they are at +6 morale already. With a decent general, these guys will stay in battle until they've routed the enemy or been nearly wiped out.

I agree, palaces are pricey. But, if you are churning out all the units you need, building all the other buildings you need, and still have koku to spend ... might as well build palaces, particularly in the provinces that are producing low-morale units. That's how I look at it anyway. By midgame I'm usually producing a ton of koku. I still produce the best dojos first though in most cases (Owari being the only consistent exception, given its +1 honor bonus to ashigaru--both yari and teppo).
