I voted Ireland, cause my ancestors are from there and it has great history and countryside.
Just one question: Why isn't Turkey on the list? A good deal of the country, including one of their top two cities is located in Europe...

Sorry, I forgot a few, can't you add options to a poll?
There is only one place like home.
Even if I brought my salary to any other European country and would be driving a Jaguar and living in a very nice house (the London area not included), I can't live without the fjords/mountains, the health-care, 80-90% in taxes and fees, winter-darkness, rain on 300 of the 365 days in a year and meeting employees of the state everywhere you turn...

You should get your hands on a second hand copy of "the new totalitarians" by Roland Huntford before you say this. Lets not forget this was the country that thought it was OK to forceably sterilise "mental defectives" well into the 1970's.
No disrespect to any Swedes today but its an accident of history that they didn't deliver a full blown fascist state.

I was a bit torn between Italy and France...but ended up on Italy.
Several reasons:
Fascinating history from Roman days to the middle ages and through the reneissance to modern times.
Incredibly diverse, to such an extent that you can't really talk about an Italian identity (but rather Tuscan, Milanese, Venetian, Roman, Sicilian and so on.)
Lots of great food, not only pizza, but also several delicious types of pasta, and probably the best ice-cream on the planet. IMO, Italy also makes the best red wine.
Not to forget it's the home of my favourite band, the power metallers in Rhapsody. They actually tipped the scales in favour of Italy. :guitarist:
I had a great trip to Rome last autumn, and I also found the time to cruise a little around the Umbrian countryside and visit Assisi.

Britain, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.
All of the best bands are/have been British, as well.
All of the best bands are/have been British, as well.
blatant lies!
Nightwish, Blind Guardian, Lacuna Coil, In Flames, Pantera, Disturbed, System of a down, Metallica, Megadeth, Green day...
All awesome modern bands which are not British. Pft at your claim, most bands nowdays which are worth anything are NOT British. Look at our music scence at the moment - Keane, Coldplay, Libertines, Killers... Wow, what crap.

Er, I'm not too much of a metal fan, really...although I will admit that our music turn has taken a bit of a downturn recently, with the exception of Radiohead and Muse, whose music I am a great fan of.
However; None of those bands you named, in my considered opinion, match up to Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, Iron Maiden, Cream, Yes, Genesis(with Peter Gabriel), Deep Purple, ELP, etc.

Indeed.
The Yanks did the hippy stuff better than us, though-Bands like the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, CSNY, CCR, and such.
I will admit that our music turn has taken a bit of a downturn recently, with the exception of Radiohead and Muse, whose music I am a great fan of.
Ditto, great music they have put out is the exception - well I wasn't such a great fan of Radioheads' last piece of work but nm...
And if you are not a fan of metal - YOU ARE MISSING OUT!!!!! The only type of music which is still progressing at such a fast rate and has such diversity. I listen to Pink Floyd and they were amazing and progressed rock brilliantly, but where is the next progression of the genre....? Seems to me rock is now simply clones and samey samey's. Makes me sick how much praise is levelled at crap like the Libertines when there are great UK metal bands going with no recognition.
However; None of those bands you named, in my considered opinion, match up to Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, Iron Maiden, Cream, Yes, Genesis(with Peter Gabriel), Deep Purple, ELP, etc.
And half of the bands you name I think suck ~;)

Nice choice of a song JAG.
Anyway...
1. Gott erhalte, Gott beschütze
Unsern Kaiser, unser Land!
Mächtig durch des Glaubens Stütze,
Führt er uns mit weiser Hand!
Laßt uns seiner Väter Krone
Schirmen wider jeden Feind!
Innig bleibt mit Habsburgs Throne
Österreichs Geschick vereint!
Innig bleibt mit Habsburgs Throne
Österreichs Geschick vereint!
2. Fromm und bieder, wahr und offen
Laßt für Recht und Pflicht uns stehn;
Laßt, wenns gilt, mit frohem Hoffen
Mutvoll in den Kampf uns gehn
Eingedenk der Lorbeerreiser
Die das Heer so oft sich wand
Gut und Blut für unsern Kaiser,
Gut und Blut fürs Vaterland!
Gut und Blut für unsern Kaiser,
Gut und Blut fürs Vaterland!
3. Was der Bürger Fleiß geschaffen
Schütze treu des Kaisers Kraft;
Mit des Geistes heitren Waffen
Siege Kunst und Wissenschaft!
Segen sei dem Land beschieden
Und sein Ruhm dem Segen gleich;
Gottes Sonne strahl' in Frieden
Auf ein glücklich Österreich!
Gottes Sonne strahl' in Frieden
Auf ein glücklich Österreich!
4. Laßt uns fest zusammenhalten,
In der Eintracht liegt die Macht;
Mit vereinter Kräfte Walten
Wird das Schwere leicht vollbracht,
Laßt uns Eins durch Brüderbande
Gleichem Ziel entgegengehn
Heil dem Kaiser, Heil dem Lande,
Österreich wird ewig stehn!
Heil dem Kaiser, Heil dem Lande,
Österreich wird ewig stehn!
5. An des Kaisers Seite waltet,
Ihm verwandt durch Stamm und Sinn,
Reich an Reiz, der nie veraltet,
Uns're holde Kaiserin.
Was als Glück zu höchst gepriesen
Ström' auf sie der Himmel aus:
Heil Franz Josef, Heil Elisen,
Segen Habsburgs ganzem Haus!
Heil Franz Josef, Heil Elisen,
Segen Habsburgs ganzem Haus!
6. Heil auch Öst'reichs Kaisersohne,
Froher Zukunft Unterpfand,
Seiner Eltern Freud' und Wonne,
Rudolf tönt's im ganzen Land,
Unsern Kronprinz Gott behüte,
Segne und beglücke ihn,
Von der ersten Jugendblüthe
Bis in fernste Zeiten hin.
Von der ersten Jugendblüthe
Bis in fernste Zeiten hin.
Therefore,
Austria.
Italy would be a close second, but I hate the Italian Government for some reason, dunno why ~;)

Oh, you, as in all of you, should check out their albums "Valley of the Damned" and "Sonic Firestorm". They're filled to the brim with the sweetest of power metal, I swear there's not one track below par. :guitarist:
And they're British, btw. Sadly it's the only British power metal band I know of, and Rhapsody is still my favourite.
Yep I have both albums now - and ye it is great that they are UK based, we need some good power metal bands, maybe this will inspire some more people.
And I agree, every single song is awesome, no poor song you have to skip in either album.

My favourite place has to be Germany. No where else can you get insulted by a guy smoking and drinking and riding a bike down a hill. He fell off. It was funny. Rhineland is pretty too.
Actually I think I should say I would have voted for Britain except I mentally exclude it from the mainland...
Belgium and Switzerland have to be the two worst countries. I was almost beaten up by a bunch of Flemish teenagers and Switzerland just felt hugely unhealthy with all of its stateless Albanian kids hanging about.

Well put. All music is pretty stupid when you think about it. It just depends on what vein of stupidity you are willing to lend yourself to. I think Pink Floyd are a bunch of vacuous, droning morons (ducks for cover), but JAG and Merc may just possibly not see it my way.
So I listen to Chopin and try not to fool myself into pretending it's anymore edifying than the Macarena or the Chicken Dance.
