I've downloaded a few tech tree's for MTW and still don't understand why I can't build certain things.
I'm playing as the Danes.
I have a castle and a dockyard, why can't I build Caravels?
I have only been able to build a metalsmith in one province. I'm guessing, but does this require metal in the tradable resources?
I have a keep (and castle) and boyer's workshop, why can't I build crossbowers?

Which period are you playing? Not all units are available in all periods...
Metalsmith requires iron and that is only in a few provinces: Sweden, Hungary, Bohemia, Aragon, etc.
Download a unit guide and units related xls files they come handy if you want to know how to build certain units...

You say you have a keep and a castle. Are they in different provinces then? To be able to build a unit all the required buildings must be in the same province. If you have them all, but scattered through different provinces, each province will only be able to build the best units its own buildings allow.

Regarding the crossbowers: What I meant to say was, I have provinces with a Boyer Workshop and a Keep and other provinces with a Boyer Workshop and a Castle.
Actually, I have Denmark with a Citadel and a Boyer Workshop and still can NOT make a crossbower.
I started in the early period. The year is currently 1175.
Can someone recommend a good tech tree (perhaps in Excel). I downloaded the one I have from this website, but it must not be complete.

Xbows will not be available until the start of the HIGH period, which is AD 1205. I think the same applies to Caravels, although I'm not sure.

Caravels need the compass, which appears around 1260 give or take.

I have seen the "compass rose" message in the 1190s definitelly waaaay before the Mongols...

Caravels need the compass, which appears around 1260 give or take. Not so. The compass is invented in 1170, according to Froggbeastegg's guide. But you still cannot build caravels until the start of the high era (1205).

On second thought it might have been earlier. I am sure that Mongols were still in the womb of future ;)

I think thats the build requirements sheets I use. Im doing a download now so in about 10 minutes I can confirm that.
Yeah thats the one, its in pdf format though.
Basically it lists every building and what you require to build it, ans a list of each troop type, by faction and what you need to build it as well as all their stats and costs etc so you can figure which are best.
