alot of you may eb bothered by this: spartan skins suck.
I've seen a site in wich I saw the helmet the greek-generals where, and teh sub-script was: spartan helmet.
so, why do generals have spartan helmets, when spartans don't have spartan helmets, but these dumb salad bowls?
anybody seed a skin with the red robe and bronze shield, but a differentr helmet? could you please give a link?

I still have the standard, and the optional one from activision sucks.
The real guestion was if anybody has seen such a unit, and maybe even give me the link. and the screenshot, and the 'how to install'

waar ben ik nou mee bezig, je bent nederlands...
weet jij hoe je op het download gedeelte kotm van twcenter?

the side-plased comb looks dumb. and it is just sick to go into battle in a mini-skirt beiing a 'sophisticated' greek, nto a barbarian.

What about getting a thread for yourself? It is not so good manners to keep talking in your own languages (english aside) outside designated areas.

I try to keep my danish either completely out (even when talking to CBR for instance) or leave it at a few small insignifiant comments that is only added onto a more significant post.

Anyway, jerby the current 'pilos' helmet is more spartan than hte corinthian one. It was used for a much longer period and most other citystates only used it for a rather short time. Also the corinthian helmet was anything but spartan, everybody used it and for a longer time than the spartans it seems.
But agreed the corinthian helmet looks very nice and cool, but it simply doesn't fit the unit historically.

Not to mention mods who can't speak the language have no idea what you're saying. So you might as well be going on about child porn for all they would know.

I prefer the downloadable Spartan skin. It's great seeing them as barechested at their armour stat suggests and still utterly mashing the enemy in melee through sheer skill!

ok, sorry, was lazy. just os you know, it was not childporn, it was about an donwloadable alternative.

http://www.hellenic-art.com/armour/helmets.htm

the only problem is it's 500 BC, but still looks better.
the bare skin is also nice. but i can't stand the side-ways comb.
is it true than activision can take stuff of mods and put them in their own patch?
would be nice if they took a look at rome total realism, lots of re-skin and enige design.

Apparently the robes are also more or less accurate, although too long. I don't know if they wore armor under them, though, which they obviously don't in the game.

Last I heard when the subject came up on here, the Spartans would wear those robes to the battle.....they'd take them off when the time came to get stuck into the fight. At which point I think someone used the word 'naked'....

Byzantine Prince
02-21-2005, 23:45
Yes the Spartans fought naked(except they wore armor). The cloaks were just so they dont' get cold on teh way to the battle.

I think the helemt is actually historically accurate for teh Spartans of time period 270 BCE though so I don't understand the complaints.

Khorak

They'd be naked but for the helmet (no jokes damn you!), shield and footwear I expect. Which to be honest, is more than bloody naked enough.

Byzantine Prince

I really like realism so it would really plase me if they got naked(no jokes now!). I don't see anything wrong with nudity, and neither should anyone. They are jsut animated characters people!

I think it would be bloody fantastic. Mainly because no Hollywood or literary creation can possibly match the total badassness of Spartans casually throwing their robes aside and marching into battle 'tackle out'. I'd be so horrendously more terrified of a Spartan than any kind of naked berserker. Mainly because no-one should be able to march into battle so confidently with such discipline without even something between their nuts and a hailstorm.

well i dare say anyone so battle hardened (oh crap thats weird sounding) should not be afraid of flaunting there stuff

anyway i can only hope they used a kilt sometimes otherwise that would be rather ...odd

I have serious reservations about the ideal that Spartans (equals, real Spartans as opposed to armed helots) ever fought naked or that you can assert it as a solid fact. Given that the literary sources are vague at best, you’re left with pictorial evidence, which can be cherry-picked to show naked hoplites or heavily armed hoplites with multiple under tunics etc...

The skins in RTW are mostly for recognizing units in battle.

It's funny to see spartans in all that red tunique pushing their spers trowgh wnemy ~;)
They WERE wearing (for pestige) but they were dropping them BEFORE battle.

So the helmets are not the biggest mistake.

The Stranger

yes i have many pictures of those red tunics, but the never wore them in battle.

The Helmets were no mistake. They actually had those kinds of helmets.

Just my 2c. but i personally prefer the original spartans. Sure, it would be more accurate if they were nekked, but, hey, Activision wouldn't be too happy with CA if all their little NCG's were asking for their money back after being traumatised by some spartan's kit. And as for the original topic on helmets, i like the salad bowls. After all, that was what they wore back then. They only wore the big frilly helmets during the persian wars, and that was way before RTW.

i like historical gameplay but prefer awesome skins above historical, ofcourse if they look great and are historical i'll see that as a luxery.

ok, if the salad bowls are historical, the form what era is the alternative? before or after? isn't there really anything else?

master of the puppets
02-22-2005, 21:30
so true

i would like them to look as they were in there prime, big frilly helms, overhand stabbing, the kopis, plus bare chest and kilt.

jerby
02-22-2005, 21:43
kopis would be extremely nice.

I take it you mean the corinthian helmet? The one the generals are wearing?
That one went out of fashion around 450BC, it was still used by hoplites now and then but often because it went from father to son.
So the helmet is from a previous date, and a quite distant one.

that is correct.

also, for people that wanted to see ehmm, naked spartans, just get a great comicbook by Frank Miller, called 300, about their stand at Thermopylae... they do not use arnour or tunics in this one :)
