I rember in the early demo of STW that Archers had a choice of attacking the enemy with their swords once they got too close. I for one would like to see this option make a comeback in a patch for the game as In battles my archers are useles after they expend all their arrows. I think it would add more to the tactical compexity of the game to have cavalry and regular archers be able to conduct melee attack after their arrows are gone. What do ya'll think?

Well that option is still available in the full game; just hold down Alt-left click and they will attack...the same holds for CA.

Dwims right- left click is the command.

Just one word of warning, I often have to repeat the command for them to melee. Seems they're none to keen on the idea of killing with a lowly sword http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

If you want them to attack another unit you'll have to repeat the command. IT NEVER BECOMES A DEFAULT STATE http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif

I have often found that foot archers and cav archers fight very well hand to hand but most people dont seem to do it or even think about it i've cut down heavy cav with cav archers many times.
Play around with it and test it i think you will find it adds much to your fighting skill.

Thanx, it's a shame they neglected to put such useful info in the manual. And kinda inexcusable. It would still be better if they fixed it so it was like the demo and you just had to right click for melee attacks.

I believe it is in the manual it's in mine anyways.

The European manual is much more useful than the Yankee one - that's why you can download the Euro manual from Totalwar.com. (My Euro manual looks like some 300-page flight sim manual, and I was very impressed with it - until I noticed it has the same stuff three times, in English, Swedish and Danish. You should only try to attack with the archers if they have high honor, I've seen to many great battleplans of mine getting screwed up because I used low honour archers as a reserve force, and they ran away from the first time an enemy screamed BOE

I like this forum, this is my first but not last post lol ;-)

Until now, being french, I believed I had the famous european manual, and I was wondering why so many players were saying it was so accurate, as mine is not at all.

But reading that it came with swedish/danish, etc..text, I understand that the french manual seems to be only a translation of the american one.

So...where could I download this "european" manual from?

download it at www.totalwar.com (http://www.totalwar.com)

it's the official site, but not nearly as helpful as this one is in terms of undertsanding gameplay (it lacks a forum)

Thanks, solypist.

In fact I knew the site, just never noticed you could download the manual there...

And concerning the forum, of course there's one...Is it a joke related to the content of the official site forum?

Correction: I, being Finnish, have the *Northern* European manual. I would imagine that French, German etc. users have manuals in their own language, but I don't really know whether the translation is from the American or European (Brit?) one. In any case, my "Euro" manual is exactly 88 pages long, repeated three times, and states the Alt+CLICK thing very clearly on page 38. It's not perfect either (it has blatant lies about Christianity, WMs and stuff), but a lot more helpful than what I've heard about the American version.

I found it on pg3 in the complete comand summary. I missed it because it is only listed there and not mentioned in the rest of the 52pg manual. I guess that's what I get for not going over the manual with a fine tooth comb. I still wish they'd make it a right-click comand though.
Although I'll never buy a strategy guide for any game (if you have the SG playing the game is just a formality) I wish some of the manuals on some of the games I have could be a little more comprehensive and clear.

This is the only game I ever bought a strategy guide for http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif I got the game home, installed it, futzed around for a few hours, then high-tailed it back to EB and bought the Prima guide.

All this before 1:00p.m. on a rainy Saturday in August http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/eek.gif

Do you know why the US manual sucks? Well, the strategy guide is not sold in retail stores in Europe (at least not around here). Thus, it's almost impossible for the average user to acquire. Thus, it's extremely unlikely that Prima/EA would ever make a profit out of an Euro strategy guide. Thus, they made the Euro manual decent enough for us not to need a strategy guide. US manuals suck specifically because you're supposed to buy the strategy guide to complement the manual. And every strategy guide bought supports this kind of attitude.

I know I had the same problem when I first started...

IMHO the problem is that in the Demo, you didn't have to hold down the alt key to make archers attack in melee. And you do in the full game.

I missed it in the maual myself so don't feel bad http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Well Anssi,

Didn't know I was becoming part of the problem. All I knew was I had a game, and couldn't figure it out satisfactorily. The web-site wasn't helping, and I couldn't post on the Org. What's a boy to do?

Damned if you do...

Sorry about that, Black Ship. The old socialist in me got out of control again. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif Didn't mean to condemn anyone (other than maybe EA) specifically, and besides, the strategy guide really seems somewhat useful. Although I don't envy you because I'm unable to buy it.
