View Full Version : why I could play MTW for much longer
Great game. Fantastic. Period.
Single biggest drawback and the reason why I could play MTW much longer?
In my opinion, and I really wish the developers noted this, MTW was much better balanced overall. What kept me in a single campaign for months was the possibility of gaining new troops twice in the game at the change of historical periods. There were events withing the game that influenced the gameplay regardless of what faction you are. There was something to look forward to - to get better troops, better technology.
RTW is a fantastic achievement in every sense, don't get me wrong, but I can reach the maximum in Barbarian culture for a few hours of gameplay. What's to keep me playing? It feels like one would have a much greater incentive for playing on if there were things happening every 50 turns or so. Now you have some events like "stoic philosophy" which doesn't really have anything to do with gameplay or "plague in Macedonia" which affects things a little bit locally. I think there should be more such events. It's a shame with such a great campaign map, with such detailed work, that there isn't more happening.
But, like I said, my biggest objection is that you reach the end of your development so soon. And all that is left to do is conquer. It get boring for me after a while.

Hey, don't worry, most people feel the same way. RTW is a great game, but it falls short of being as addictive or great as MTW.

I think Europa Barbarorum will save this game.
Is that a mod or the exp pack?

That's what I've been preaching, but other than bringing it back from the dead, I don't think it can stack it up against MTW even with the mod. Time will tell, I suppose.

I think the development time for the units are all fine. Any fool could play on the our "what will i get next?" I am, however, disappointed with the conquering part. The reason these games are boring after you reached the tech tree limit is because the AI offers little or no challenge in opposing you.

which is why it was amazing to play MTW because there were 3 periods.... RTW doesn't draw out the gameplay that this timeframe has, it constricts it. Yes I realize that the turns have somewhat prolonged the gameplay, but at the same time - I've yet to get past 200BC without being too bored to continue (see: 30+ conquered). The most delightful part of the campaign is the beginning, no doubt, and it was similar in MTW - though there was more that could go wrong; unlikely scenarios like Civil wars, un-ruly provinces, and faction revivals. This is, of course a truncated list.

You're right. This goes especially if you're playing one of the stronger nations, like Carthage, or Egypt. And if you put 5-6 armored war elephant units in your army... Well, let's just say that, regardless of who or what is on the other side, it's not a question of whether you'll win, but whether you'll lose one elephant or none. Even with the barbarian factions - if you set it up with your best units, the AI looks terribly weak. No real challenge.
I still think it would be rather easy to make at least some modifications to the game in order to introduce some periods and changes in different cultures. Playing Romans gives you the Marian reforms and the assignments given by the Senate, and this makes it much more interesting to play for a longer period than the other factions.
If the developers are the same folk who made MTW, than it shouldn't be too hard for them to observe these things. Maybe the expansion will change some things...

I guess you could say it's partly due to the time period RTW is based on. During the period depicted in MTW many great advances were made concerning weapons and armour. So you can give each faction many units spread over a few time periods (early, high, late). I did love sitting in my own moderate kingdom in MTW, while building up my tech level.
The sad thing is.... there are many things in RTW I love. There are just as many things in MTW that I love too. And when I play either I keep missing the good things about the other!

i think in RTW it's up to you to create a balance in troops and conquest, this is so in every game but in MTW the balance was better, like if you wanted a challenge conquer the pope and you'll have a big fight every three or two turns. there are no revolts that go for a whole nation, the game is good but just unfinished, if there wasn't a MTW all players would rate this game 100% that's for sure.

well in MTW I played the vanilla MTW for a month or so before buying the XP - and then played that for a long time before searching for mods - which by that time there were plenty. With RTW, I can't play Vanilla in it's current state, it needs mods for it to be worthwhile for me to play it.
I hate the campaign on MTW and its is very boring and dull. The campian map alone on RTW makes it a much more intresting game. I actually like getting my best troops asap in RTW, that way i can have battles that are actually worth fighting .
