Star Wars was never good. People were just impressed by the special effects and loved them so out of proportion that it's still hanging like impending death on our youth. What a bunch of crap. It's not even original. Have you ever seen Yojimbo. It's basically the same plot except much better(in feudal Japan). The thing that pisses me off the most is the ridiculous looking aliens! What the hell was he on when he made up those abominations of animation?
FYI 2001: A space Odyssey had way better effects and was 7 years older then Star Wars. Sure Star Wars is probably way more apealing to little children but I mean adults should not enjoy ST as much as they do. I mean you have to grow up sometime.
star wars was never my bag....allways found it very overrated......it looks cool nonetheless

A) The correct acronym to start off with would be IMO or IMHO, not FYI, it makes you sound like an arrogant bastard.
B) What is "ST"?

You quite simply cannot compare 2001 and Star Wars. I love both films-Star Wars being one of my overriding passions-but they are completely different. 2001 is a Sci-Fi film, whereas Star Wars is a fantasy film set in space.
The reason Star Wars is so popular is that it is the ultimate myth. It has alll the essential components-a hero who discovers himself, a princess, a lovable rogue, an epic battle of good versus evil. Star Wars has all these elements which resonate strongly within everyone-they are almost primal. It also has truly great characters, and some very good lines, humour, as well as special effects which really still haven't dated much, in my opinion.
And who wants to grow up? I'll love Star Wars until the day I die.

BKS, you wisely ignored my first paragraph because you don't want to beleave it. Well, it's true. Star Wars is just Yojimbo in space instead of feudal Japan.
The reason I say "grow up" is because your tastes have to change as your body grows. You can't and shouldn't like the same stuff you liked back when you were 10. You're a grownup now it's time to boaden your horizons.

I didn't address the first paragraph because I've never seen Yojimbo, so I couldn't comment.
The comment about broadening my horizons is so patronising that if I wasn't a staff member, It'd be flame time. I'll just say that I will like what I like. I think it's amazingly superficial to start disliking things just because you're a few years older, and you think that you probably shouldn't enjoy it anymore, or you want to be an iconoclast. Also, don't you know adults who like Stars Wars? It was by no means enjoyed just by children at the time.

BKS, since you're a staff member allow me...
BP, why are you such a patronizing jerk most of the time? Why do you have to ALWAYS start crap with everyone over the the most mondane things? For someone, like youself, to tell anyone to grow up is laughable. Go back to the Watch Tower and keep crying like a little school girl about your status, atleast that's more entertaining. Sheesh.... ~:handball:

Launching catapults in glass toilets eh! ohow aboot thot then.
Actually it is not based on Yojimbo... Clint Eastwood Spaghetti westerns have more in common with Yojimbo. Sergio Leone's A Fistful of Dollars is a direct descendent not Star Wars.
As for Kurasawa being an influence on Lucas 'like' anyone with an ounce of knowledge knows that. Japan was a huge influence on Star Wars. Names... Obi Wan means belt in Japanese. Lukes outfit is a Judo Gi. While the sword fighting is Kendo (fighting like they have a single edge blade not an omnidirectional one). Also the whole Force/Zen. Darth Vaders helmet being very much like a Japanese Samurai. However Lucas also brings in a lot of other myth into his series much of it like the Holy Grail and the Golden Fleece. It is a movie that is based on global archetypes. A lot of the films are a nod to Kurasawa and other greats and is more of a homage as the plot is something different again.
Kurasawa was more directly copied when The Seven Samurai was made into the Magnificent Seven. Kurasawa movies are aptly homages in some to Shakespeare and other sources. They retell tales together and use cultural universal themes.

Lucas used to talk about another Kurosawa film, "The Hidden Fortress" (1958), as an inspiration for Star Wars. I've seen it, and it isn't really very similar at all, although some of the Japan-ery in Star Wars may be due to Kurosawa's films.
Yojimbo is great, but it is more like a Western in style. That was deliberate on Kurosawa's part, he was a fan of Westerns. The same character that stars in Yojimbo also shows up in "Sanjuro" and one of the films in the Zatoichi series: "Zatoichi to Yojimbo". They all rock.
By the way, the spoiler site was great. Maybe six months or more ago, I ran across a detailed plot synopsis for SWIII, and it looks like it was right on the money. Frankly, I'm glad. Looks like we'll actually have a decent story this time. Plus, lots of light-sabery goodness. I'm still crossing my fingers about the dialogue and acting.

And do you have to share it?
I did like SW ep 1. ep2 was worse. You could actually see it was done in a hurry just to get more money asap, instead of actually delivering a finished product.
But anyway I am waiting for ep3 eagerly.

Star Wars, as a whole universe, kicks ass. The last two movies were disappointing, but I have high hopes. And the original triology kicked and still does kicks ass, and the books are awesome.
And Big King, if you won't flame him, may I? :furious3:
And sweet pics... only looked at a few, want this one to be a suprise... yes I'm a geek. ~;)
Couldn't agree more, hopefully the guy that played Anakin took some acting lessons after Ep2.
I actually saw him in another movie (Shattered Glass) in my movie class at school... I thought he was a lot better in it than in the Episode 2.

They were both absolutely dreadful. I think the moment the acting really hit rock bottom was Hayden's whiny cry of "I KILLED THEM AAaaLlll...", though.
At least he's got longer hair in this one though, that's something.
As far as I'm concerned, Lucas can't go wrong if he has lots of Lightsaber action in it. The Phantom Menace was mediocre, but the lighsaber duel at the end was great. A good duel can lift the whole film.

The way it was similar was that that the story was told through the eyes of the two lowliest characters. Peasants in the hidden fortress, the two droids in star wars. It is actually a pretty cool way to tell a story, it breaks from the norm.

I second that. But my fav star wars movie was ep.2. Although Hayden Christiansen did drag things down a bit. But the clone war parts at the end saved it.

I think that Natalie Portman is quite hot... her acting scenes aren't that great though... haven't really seen her in any other movies either. It may be just the lines she was given...

I kind of disagree... Mabye it's just me, but special effects only go so far. The first triology's set pieces seemed a lot more real... perhaps because they weren't a green screen. I think thats the problem in my mind... to much reliance on special effects. Take for example Lord of the Rings (my favorite movies ever... sorry Star Wars... ~;) ): they had a lot of excellent special effects but they used as much real things that they could. On the other hand it seems that Lucas uses real people and sets only when he has to... I don't agree with that, but that's me.

I have to second that, one of the things that really made Empire Strikes Back stand out for me (my fave SW Movie ever) was the way how the "Good guys" only just manage to scrape away with their hides intact rather than winning in a gloriously over the top sugar-happy way...
Interestingly I like films that have alternative endings, it sure beats the usual Cliche of "Get the girl, kill the bad guy and save the entire planet".

You could also count the first dancing slave girl ~;)
Though yeah your right they are all extras and she was the only female character... (though can't we say the same for Portman?) Not that they needed another one, mind you as Carrie was great.
Kaiser of Arabia
02-26-2005, 20:35
Well you got those Twilek dancing girls
and all those background characters you see for 1/2 a sec
The Handmaidens from Episode I
The other queen from Episode II
Mon Motha
Padme
The Pixilized things from the games.
That covers it.
Anywayz, Lea was like the uber character under Vader and Solo. After her were all those imp officers that died in like 1/2 sec after they showed up on screen (Cept for Admiral Tarkin and Admeral *whathisnuts* who appeared for 10 mins before they died)
Those were all great parts.
Personally I thought Ep I and Ep II were rather good, but no RotJ. ESB was the 3rd best not the best. RotJ, aNH, tESB, II, and I in that order
Big King Sanctaphrax
02-26-2005, 20:37
I think RoTJ gets a bad press. Sure, the Ewoks were a bad idea, and the plot wanders at points, but the Battle of Endor was great (and features possibly my favourite piece of Star Wars music) as was the final lightsaber duel between Luke and Vader.
ShadesPanther
02-26-2005, 20:56
Sure ROTJ was good but the damn Ewoks just ruined it. Elite troops being takien out by teddy bears throwing sticks :dizzy2:
for me ESB is the best, New hope is 2nd with ROTJ 3rd (all fairly close though) followed by II and I (They are very good but they just don't match the others sadly)
Big King Sanctaphrax
02-26-2005, 21:01

Na. Luke was cooler than Leia, as were Chewie, and the droids. Plus Wedge, who was just the best character of all.

I really like wookies...
And I liked ROTJ... the Ewoks aren't that great, but I liked the whole Jabba thingy... and the Endor space battle is still my favorite space battle.
And the whole Vader redemtion... awesome.
BTW, did any of you guys see the Star Wars DVDs they realiesed?
They added and changed a few things... including Anakin Skywalker at the end of ROTJ.

The amount of bitching about the extremely minor changes on the DVDs was embarrassing. The whole 'Greedo shoots first' debacle, in particular, was laughable.

Yes, I agree the first Greedo scene was the best, but the amount of complaining, and the importance placed on it by some fans, was bizarre. "It changed Han's character completely!" Um...Yes...
The Blind King of Bohemia
02-26-2005, 21:47
Theres some small others: Boba fetts voice changed to the new zealand actor who plays jango fett( which is pointless) and a look at naboo at the celebrations when the 2nd death star gets it and the point big king mentions above which looks better than it sounds
The Blind King of Bohemia
02-26-2005, 21:52
Yeah i agree with you BKS i never understood all those nobs going on about that with hans character and all that.
