Its a very very nice game from japan, very historical too, i kid you not!
Its set in 190 A.D in the era of emperor Commodus, the story is you were a slave and you got captured and thrown into the games (which happen to be the favourite pastime of the emperor, who also fights in these games) anyways the story is rather silly but the gladiator creation process is pretty nice, you start facing an interrogator of sorts who ask you questions like from where you came and what you worked and wether you beleived in the roman gods or not and etc. Its all in japanese but the voice is in english, you can choose to be a Briton, Numidian, Germanian, Gaul... etc and set your base stats by telling him what you worked before becoming a slave (labourer and farmer is what i could figure out from the english voice), anyways to make a retardedly long review short here is the website for the game it explains the gameplay in detail, the english is pretty decent too.

There won't be a stateside release as far as i know, unfortunately, and you also need a modded PS2 or a Japanese PS2 to play the game (i got a japanese PS2 especially for imports ~;p). History nutters this is a game for you if you like gladiator games.
