I've heard that if you leave temples, shrines, etc, alone long enough in captured towns, you can get your people to embrace that god and then start building that temple. is there any truth to that rumor?

Romans can adopt and upgrade temples to Epona if they are level 3 when they are captured from their Gallic/Spanish builders. This is the only case in which a god can be adopted into a culture that doesn't already have a god that gives the same bonuses. If the conquered city has a temple to another god that gives the same bonuses, it can be upgraded, as it represents the same god by different names.

some temples give similar or even identical bonuses, but are actually different temple types. look in export_descr_buildings to see which ones. there are quite a few exceptions.

There are at least 4 different temple types that give +5% happiness and +5% law at each level from 1-4.

Indeed... For instance the Temple of Aphrodite for Pontus can be upgraded to a *surprise surprise* Tempe of Aphrodite by the Greek Cities. Hephaestus is similar to Vulcan I believe (thus interbuildable).

Well I believe Vulcan was merely the Roman version of him, so if they follow that then it should be. You should at least be able to change them to a temple of a new religion *Hagia Sophia cough cough*.

Well that was more or less what I said. If you take a Seleucid city with a Temple of Hephaestus as the Scipii then you can build a Temple of Vulcan afterwards when you have progressed to the next governor building.

I have also modded the temples so that for instance all Greek factions can upgrade every Zeus temple and all Roman factions can upgrade Mars temples.

no, but if the god that's there is the same type as a god you have you can upgrade it. like you are julii and you took a carthaginian shrine the shrine was dedicated to the god of justice just as a god you worship, then you can upgrade the shrine to a temple.
