Well the main purpose of this poll is to see where people have there unit sizes set at in the game. So I can send in the results and a link of the poll of what unit size should get the most attention for the expansion pack.

I've noticed the A.I. performs poorly on the battlefield when using larger unit sizes mainly due to the fact it overstretches it's lines up to 5 times longer than mine, I plow the center and break out and since they are so overstretched I make piecemeal of there army.

Also on the campaign map they will deplete there populations like crazy and although I do have some population problems, I eventually pull through
to having cities while the A.I. does'nt have a thing.

From my observations it seems the majority of players go for large but the poll will tell.

I prefer huge because it makes the battles that much more epic

I use large, sometimes I use huge, but my computer can only handle 6,400 or so men so I cannot have huge armies of multiple factions duking it out. Otherwise I would be tempted to use huge.

These are my basic reasons for not using huge too.

I use huge (thats the one with 160 men per infantry yes?, I've forgotten)

Its great especially if one plays on VH so that the computer can cheat grossly and keep fielding massive armies.

My computer can handle it rather well, I even had a battle with over 10,000 in it the other day which was a bit jerky at the beginning but as the kill counts started racking up performance got better~D

I play with large, but I think the AI would probably be at it's best with small unit sizes, since many cities become emptied by over-production of military units.

i use huge, makes the game more interesting, but i modded cavalry size down.

Sadly I'm not allowed to post on this forum :inquisitive:

I use huge for the first time with the egyptians on medium/hard. Used always default on MTW before. Playing time is just too short to notice gameplaydifferenc yet. But on hard setting the AI is spitting out tons of armys, that's for sure. I'm still struggling to build a strong economy. I wonder if the Seleucids will run on dry anytime soon if they continue to build armys at this pace ?

I'm on large too due to my computer spec :embarassed:

I use normal. Since that's normal and all the Emp audios are done in normal.

I use normal too, but my computer could also take bigger unit sizes (it only seems to moan when to much flaming arrows are being shot actually), so that's quite tempting since it indeed looks much more epic...

I voted huge, but I have actually modded the game so that I have an intermediary size between large and huge. Huge is too tough on the computer and cities get depleted too fast, large is too small for my taste, this new size is perfect (cav 81, infantry 120 and large infantry 180).

I use Very Large size. Half-way between large and huge, which is 120 and 180 men units. I think CA should have made that an option without having to edit the preferences.txt file manually as the step-up from large to huge is massive for the average user.

Bigger is better.

The point of the Total War serie, is to fight battle with hundred of men. So, of course, the highest number of soldiers per unit is a must-have.

I also changed the Preferences.txt to allow the basic unit size of 120 (thanks again for the 'idiots guide' Kraxis!). This gives a nice balance between epic battles and depopulation (and is also less PC resource hungry). So, if they could include the option to have 'Extra Large' unit settings in the XP, that'd be good.

Huge. I just wish you can control more than 20 units and the whole battlemap playable. :duel:

IF I was allowed to vote, I'd say HUGE (regardless my computer is a c**p and cannot handle this) as it adds to the realism: it makes the player cautious not to depopulate the cities...

I should have read that guide first, started a long campaign with default settings, but I would go huge if could've started over, which I am over halfway thru it to even think about.

I use huge but i've edited the export_descr_unit.txt that every unit should have 200 men but for phalanx 240.

Well, I just bought a new computer with all my money, and it is good, but huge sized units brings it to it's knees, so I stick with large, which may get choppier at the very large battles.

How can I access to that guide?
I'm thinking to mod the unit size(if that's not too difficult).

Actually I want to play Huge but also I don't wanna sacrifice the graphics. So my vote goes to Large.

I just wish there was some way to change the unit size without affecting how many people it draws from a city. I'd prefer to play with huge unit size, but the barbarian factions just can't take it. Even on large, I still run across a lot of mostly depopulated cities. And even the cities with some amount of people haven't enough to advance to the next level, leaving them with mediocre troops. I'd swear that's what the Gauls have such a tough time of things.

OK - sorry to cause confusion. There wasn't a 'guide' as such - I asked how to do this in the general modding forum, and Kraxis (and also Simetrical) explained how it's done. It really is simple - see for yourself:

One thing though - as far as I can make out, the change you make to the preferences.txt will only kick when you start a new campaign, it won't affect existing ones.

I used to play at Large, but my historical reading has shown me the light and the way... ~D For the early Roman units Huge is the way to go...
