View Full Version : Any way to make the AI get bigger empires?

To this date, I've never seen a dominating AI faction... Unlike in MTW, where especially the Almohads/Spanish, English/French and Byzantines/Egyptians always created big armies and empires which created a real challenge to fight, none of the factions in RTW do the same, not even the Romans...They rarely get beyond 10 provinces, which means that they're not really a threat to you.
Are there any way to change the AI to make that happen? For example making them more aggressive, not only against you, but the other AI empires too?
Oh, and also change the priority of training units....I'm sick and tired of facing Armenian and Parthian armies completely made up of Eastern Infantry! :furious3:
Ok in the link are explained the types ot thinking of the AI, what units are their priority, how they control their empire by trade, etc.

In the Vanilla Campaign that can normally be the case, of course that is unless you happen to allow the Egyptians (provided you arent playing them) to expand they will normally reach titanic proportions.
So far in RTR, I've seen the Seleucids go buck wild and take over at least 30 provinces, and I've seen the Ptolemaics (Egypt) do the same thing. Also I'm actually seeing the first AI controlled Barbarian "Empire" being established by the Britons as they go crazy on Gaul and Germany.
I'm guessing that it all has something to do with their personalities. There is a list of them and how they will make a faction focus on a certain aspect (military, trade, etc) and even what units they build (focus on cav/inf/missile) as well as how agressive they are. You should be able to find it in this part of the forum actually.
Of course it will also have something to do with just how much cash they start with and how well off their starting regions are. Should you boost their starting funds and maybe make their provinces more wealthy, you should most likely see increased fighting.

Thanks for the info, Alin, although it doesn't help much when looking further into it....according to it, the Parthians have a bias towards Missile and light cavalry, and armenians have a bias towards missile troops and light&heavy cavalry, but if they do, then why do they KEEP SENDING THOSE DAMNED EASTERN INFANTRY ARMIES?? :furious3: :p
Boosting their starting funds, buildings and troops might help tho....but it can also cause a stalemate, and I'm back to the exact same positions...
Also, It'll eliminate the early game and go straight to the middle/late techs...
I really, really hope they make the AI much more aggressive(at least on Very Hard) in the expansion ~:)

I tried to tackle the same issue. I played 70 years with Vanilla as SPQR, doing nothing but hitting end turn. Here' s what I found:
1. The AI personality in descr_strat.txt doesn't matter much. Initial denari amount can only do so little.
2. In version 1.2, the AI fails to expand because of abandoned sieges. I think this is bugged. If you mod out all walls, the AI will expand significantly faster and several faction form mini-empires (15-20 provinces).
3. AI empires are limited by rebellions. If you mod in some more loyalty , they will expand bigger.
4. The most reliable way to boost a faction is to weaken its neighbors, or give it more starting provinces.

The reason the Parthians keep sending over eastern infantry is that they are in a serious crunch for $ and have nothing else to build. I added eastern horse archers as an early build and you see a much more logical mix of troops.

Afrit,
I agree with everything except your point #1. The AI personality does make a difference. I have seen marked changes in play just changing personalities.
