This may be a newbie question but here goes... Some of my former barbarian towns have taverns in them. They give me a happiness bonus so I don't want to destroy them. Do they cause culture problems? Are they part of a building family?

All buildings are equal in the culture penalty (including temples) except the governor's house series. Thus, taverns do cause a culture penalty which is proportional to the percentage of the total buildings in the city they represent. If you tear down eveything but the tavern, the tavern will cause a high penalty. If you build every possible building, the tavern will be such a small fraction of the total that the penalty will be very small and might even disappear (not sure). If there are enough other buildings around of your culture, the tavern gives more happiness than it costs in culture penalty. However, governors in towns with taverns tend to get drunk a lot, and that hurts their skills BAD. There are two levels of taverns, but both can only be built by barbarians, IIRC.
