Can anyone direct me to a mod for the Greek Cities or the Macedonians that will give a skin or an entirely new unit of infantry that is NOT a spearman. Something like hoplite swordsmen.

Thank You.

You don't need an entire Mod,in TWC downloads look for this:
HellenicSwordsman.zip
it is more Macedonian in the look, anyway if you have something in mind let me know I can make you a custom one, this one has been made by these two guys:
"This is a Hellenic Swordsman that was textured by me a8686 and modeled by j4k3 "
from the Read me

Also Drakon's Hellenistic Mod had two types of Greek sword infantry, the Hamippos and the Agrianes, not really outstanding stuff but... ~;)

Another thing. Would it be possible to simply mod the game so that hoplites use swords as their main weapon?

Yes it is possible, you have to clone an hoplite model, both in descr_model_battle.txt than in export_descr_model.xt
in the first one you must rename it,tear out the fs_spearman skeleton
in the latter you have to point the soldier to the new name you gave it,get rid of the phalanx formation, zero out the secondary weapon stats, and paste them in place of the old primary stats.

Legionario, is there an export_descr_model.txt? I don't see one in my data folder. Do you mean export_descr_unit.txt?

Alrighty, the units appear in game now. However, the unit card is a peasant, and I do not know how to add the description to the unit.

Also, even though the hoplite swordsmen that I made appear on the battle map, they are not swordsmen at all. Though they no longer sport phalanx spears, they now use melee spears. How can I change this so I can sleep well tonight?

(Sorry for the double-post, I'm not allowed to edit my posts for some reason)

You didn't need to crate a clone blah blah blah. All you need to do is open this export_descr_unit.txt and then delete the line with spear and also the part that says phallanx.

I've tried it too prince. It doesn't work

deleting those things will not work all that will do is make it so the hoplites cannot form a phalanx and that they will not have a combat bonus(i think its a bonus??) from using a spear. but on the other hand i have no idea i tried to do the same thing with a Parthia hillmen but all i managed to do was make their spears and all that look really mangled rather than making them swords.

Yes sorry a typo.... :dizzy2:

Alrighty, the units appear in game now. However, the unit card is a peasant, and I do not know how to add the description to the unit.

it's because it lacks the proper two picture files, that go into:
data/UI/units
data/UI/unit_info
and then the folder for the culture it pertains, follow the file names format, looking at the ones already there, you'll understand how they must be named ~;) also the dimensions must be exactly the same as those already there, best thing is taking a shot of the new unit, and resize and Alfa channel it,to fit an existing one ( of course must be renamed) ~;)
also you need to put lines in export_descr_unit_enums.txt
and the descriton lines here data/text/export_units.txt

~ very smart...so you'll lose the original unit.... ~

Hoplite swordmen have never existed . The were called Hoplites only because they were able to set a wall of spears against the enemy!!

@Henry Let

~;) ~:) They call here Hoplite swordsman just because they want/like a Greek infantryman wich carries a sword ,in fact they were called "Agrianos" or "Hamippoi" and were not at all like an Hoplite...and by the way...they were called Hoplites not because the spears.... ~;) but because of their shield...
the "Hoplon"....if you wanna play professor you should be better informed next time ~;)

Since the modified hoplites are too much of a hassle, I decided to import the sword hoplites from SPQR into the un-modded game. They are working well, but like most of the SPQR units, they are produced at 0 turns. How do I change this to one turn in order to make the game more balanced?

I take it you understand the file enough since you could copy the unit.

Find the costline, every other unit starts out with either 1, 2 or 3. Your Greek swordsmen should start with 0. Change the 0 to a 1 and it will take 1 turn to train them.

Yikes, I can't believe I missed that. Thank you.

Yes that simple, and if you use "Caligula" it's even easier.... ~;)

I don't use programs if I can help it, they're too bulky. But you don't have to be a script monkey like me, just follow these simple instructions.

Open C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War\Data\export_descr_unit.txt

find warband_sword_briton

Scroll down to Ownership britons and edit it to this
Ownership britons, greece

I haven't tested it, but in theory (knowing how to script) this should allow the greeks to build the Chosen Swordsman.

See I told him SPQR mod. lol its easier to copy units that try to edit yourself. SPQR mod had hoplites. :book:

Glad you got them working, you have to have a cas file that uses sword as main weapon.

Unfortunately it is not so easy.
You need also to assign a texture to the greek unit in descr_model_battle.txt and if possible a sprite.

type warband_sword_briton
skeleton fs_swordsman
indiv_range 40
texture britons, data/models_unit/textures/unit_barb_warband_briton_.tga
texture greek_cities, data/models_unit/textures/mynewtexture.tga
model_flexi_m data/models_unit/unit_barb_warband_briton_sword_high.cas, 8
model_flexi_m data/models_unit/unit_barb_warband_briton_sword_med.cas, 15
model_flexi data/models_unit/unit_barb_warband_briton_sword_low.cas, 30
model_flexi data/models_unit/unit_barb_warband_briton_sword_lowest.cas, max
model_sprite britons, 60.0, data/sprites/britons_warband_sword_briton_sprite.spr
model_sprite greek_cities, 60.0, data/sprites/britons_warband_sword_briton_sprite.spr
model_tri 400, 0.5f, 0.5f, 0.5f

Although it would be possible (and better IMO) to create a new unit, with the same model, different skin and different name. In such case you have to include the name of the new unit in export_descr_unit_enum.txt and the description in Data\text\export_units.txt.

Moreover, the export_descr_unit.txt file doesn't control the recruitment in campaign. If you want the greek swordman to appear in the campaign you have to edit also export_descr_buildings.txt.
Furthermore, you won't have the recruit or the info cards. You have to make new ones (or copy and paste the old ones) and place them in Data\ui\units\GREEK_CITIES and Data\ui\unit_info\GREEK_CITIES folders.
