hi there... been playing this game for ages (+ expansion) without probs.
suddenly.. i'm getting crashes to desktop while either in or loadin a save game to the campaign screen, with the 'placed counter' thud the last thing i hear.
saw this posted in another forum, but there were no responses.
am patched up both in games terms and graphic drivers wise, although i don't think i've played this game since i installed DX9.0c
can anyone help, cos this is really peeing me off and all i wanna do is play

Did you save it after you exited out of the campaign. That is what I always do is save it even though it autosave it best to do this.I learned from my Trek games to do this as well when in a campaign.I am not sure as to why you are crashing it may be your memory or vid card. How do you load the game useing shortcut or progams/totalwar and what version do you have just MTW or MTWVI in the MTWViking Invasion you don't need to be patch up.I have DX9.0C and I have no problems.
Did you do a fresh intall of the game lately or when you unistalled it did you delete the game folder.I hope some of this helps as I am not as knowledged in this game as I am in my Trek games. What else have you done or haven't?
I had the exact same problem yesterday. I worked out that it was when I updated my drivers. Even after re-installing the game I crashed back to the desktop when loading a game. So I just re-installed my old drivers with the CD given with the PC. Problem was solved.
Hope that helps. ~
That seems to be a 'common' problem. When I first started playing, I would CRASH at every transition to combat mode, or back to campaign mode.
Rolling back my Nvidia drivers solved the problem. There was a thread about it around here somewhere...
Try it - there is a good chance it will fix your problem.

Yes, but some versions of Nvidia drivers seems to have "issues" with DX9.0c. I use Nvidia drivers version 56.64 with DX9.0c. That works fine.
Exactly - certain NVidia drivers don't deal with certain versions of Direct X correctly. It's definitely worth a shot to roll back your video drivers.

I also rolled back my Nvidia drivers to great effect - much smoother gameplay. However I also experienced the same problem occcasionally. It is always during a large campaign, with lots going on when I have quicksaved often. If I would quicksave and then quickly exit or reload,or end the turn the loading bar would get half way, sound effects would start in the background and then straight to desktop. The save game file gets corrupted this way and seems unsalvageable. The best advice is not to rely on the quicksave and save on the main menu.
It may be a good idea to setup a "Sticky" dealing with all the CTD issues.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I wasn't going to suggest old drivers till I saw
the dxdiag. We have found that there are problems with the newer
Nvidia drivers, atleast 66.93 and 71.84. In any case, thanks for the
information.

I have had advice on a forum called The Guild, players of this game
suggested a conflict with direct X9.0c and new versions of the nvidia
drivers. I rolled back to each version and stopped at the one used with
success by another person (56.64)
After uninstalling and reinstalling MTW and the expansion pack, i have
so far had success (running a new game and loading the save of said
game) without any crashes.
I've attached the Dxdiag as requested.
So far so good, I will raise this ticket if any other problems occour,
but can you confirm my and other peoples sucpicions in regards to the
DX vs Nvidia conflict.

Hi,
Thank you for contacting Activision’s Technical Support. I'm sorry to
hear about your problem. I will try as best as I can to help you.
Could you please attach a diagnostic report generated by your computer so
that we can further help you.
1) Go to the Start menu and select Run.
2) In the Run window type "dxdiag" without the quotes and hit OK
3) Run ALL the tests for video and sound
4) When you are done with the tests, click the "Save all information"
button.
5) Save the text file that is generated by dxdiag.
6) Attach the dxdiag.txt through the webpage forms with the provided
link.

have seen the FAQ's in regards to the crash to desktop problem.
this is the first time this has happend to me, i have run the game fine
for around a year now, I think this may be due to my upgrade to Direct
X 9.0c but am unsure.
I cannot load any save games now and when in a 'new' game it eventually
crashes to desktop, always within the campaign screen.
have attached my msinfo32.
