Is it possible to refresh units after a battle without losing a large amount of valor?
if I just reinforce a 30 man unit of swabian swordsmen valor 3 with a fresh one the valor decreases extremly, so that I do more harm than good. Is there a way to avoid this?

The reason it works that way is that valor is measured by individual men, not by units. Your 3-valor Swabian swordsmen aren't losing valor, they're just being joined by some 0-valor recruits so the average goes down, and the display only shows you the average for the group. There's still 30 high-valor soldiers in there (and they're not all 3-valor either, that's just their average) who will do just as well in coming battles, but the new guys will still get chewed up. If you want to keep the valor high, just merge multiple veteran units to get up to full strength. If they both have higher valor to begin with the average won't change as much. But keep in mind you're never losing valor by combining units, even though it appears that way.

One tip - make sure you turn off "auto tidy units" at the start of your campaign. (Press the little triangle next to the world map.) That way your depleted units in each stack are left alone at the end of each turn. You can manually merge the valored remnants together to create complete units with valor.

If you command the battle yourself you can check the logfile afterwards. This shows the individual men in the unit and the valour they have and the amount of kills they scored. Only displays up to 9 valour (I found this out with jedi princes).

Where can I find that log file? And do I have to check after each battle or are these logs kept permanently?

On My PC it's at:-

My Computer/C:/Program Files/Total War/Medieval - Total War/Log Files

Yeah they are kept until you delete them I think. :book:

BAD is right, they stay there permanantly, filed by date - only used for battles which you command - so mine were relatively small, never had much time on my hand to be fighting the large battles.
