i'm technically still banned from .com as i haven't bothered to ask for reinstatement (supposedly it's past my one week probation lol), nor do i particularly wish to at this point, but things are looking worse...

to try and AVOID the loadgame-AI-siege-lift bug, i've been alt-tabbing my way between windows and and an always-on RTW. but now it seems that even THIS might be causing trouble. just like the poster zieprus says - i had a storm during a turn, and alt-tabbing back and forth made the storm disappear even though technically i didn't manually "load" up any game. that said, it is a fact that RTW displays a "loading game" progress bar when tabbing back to the game from windows.

i also had been noticing that the AI still seemed to lift some sieges without much logic, and i think it might be tied to my alt-tabbing as well.

ARGH, i don't know if i even want to spend the time to test THIS out as well!!!

Why wouldnt you just click on the taskbar icon/thingie to go back to RTW?

doesnt alt-tab just achieve the same result?

I dunno, thats why I asked. I hardly ever exited to windows when playing the game and I always just clicked on the icon to go back. I noticed some weird graphics effects after exiting and returning so chose not to do it much.

When you switch out, the game has to reload the display graphics, and those disappear. The effects of a storm/flood/volcano do not continue through the turn. They've already happened, the rest is just eye candy. This has always been there. Wait for a volcanic eruption at Vesuvius or Etna, and switch out/back. The lava will no longer be displayed.

I've been doing the Alt-Tab thing to keep RTW running while I use the computer for other tasks and haven't noticed any problems yet, after doing this for a week. It does take about as long to reload the graphics as it does before a battle, so that doesn't seem too unusual. There's still some significant memory usage when I'm out of the game, so it must not just be dumping everything to file and re-loading when I start back.

I haven't had a chance to see any AI seiges, though. I chalk that up to being early in the game, with everyone still grabbing up rebel villages, posturing on their borders, and trying to create alliances.

quillan: perhaps you are right and hopefully it is just the graphical elements of certain events that are lost. however, have you tried to fight a battle near the volcano AFTER you alt-tabbed back into the game (thus erasing the lava flow from the campaign map)? will the actively erupting volcano still be present on the battle map? (as opposed to the normal smoke clouds when fighting near volcanos that haven't erupted that particular year/turn)

Ah, the computer doesn't use much electricity. I have the monitor turn off after a few minutes of inactivity. Besides, I usually leave mine running all the time anyway. It can be indexing files or downloading program updates or something useful when nobody's using it.
