This is a tough one - my opinions change constantly, for instance at the moment I am into all things power metal, in a couple months time it might be back to thrash metal etc... But -

1) Iron Maiden - without doubt THE best band on the planet.

2) Metallica - old style.

3) Black Sabbath - legendary.

4) System of a down - unique and awesome.

5) Dragonforce - new UK band I just can't stop listening to.

6) Megadeth - not fair their last UK gig this year!

7) Nightwish - Wishmaster and Century Child are two of the best recent metal albums, full stop.

8) Pantera - one of the best modern metal guitarists and some awesome solo's and riffs.

9) Slayer - for the pure aggression

10) Aerosmith - the best rock band (and the coolest) on the planet.

Well ten are certainly easier to choose than five, like I have seen posted before, but it's still hard for me to narrow it down that much, but here goes. Like most others here though, this is in no particular order.

Metallica (first five albums only)
The Ramones
Guns n' Roses
AC/DC
The Clash
Spineshank
Rush
Def Leppard
Sabbat
Yes

Admittedly my list changes from time to time. Here are a few more that could be on the list - Sleeper, Pink Floyd, Motley Crue, Elastica, King Diamond, early to mid Iron Maiden (upto somewhere in time). I think that will do. ~:)

But what a wonderful place to be stuck in.
Hell yeah! ~

Here's mine:
1.The Grateful Dead
2. Dylan
3. Beatles (and Harrison and Lennon's solo stuff... especially Harrison.)
4. Rolling Stones
5. Allman Brothers Band
6. Clapton (Cream, Bluesbreakers, Deric, Blind Faith, etc.)
7. Neil Young (including CSNY... yeah, I know it's cheating, but so there. ~D )
8. Hendrix
9. Zeppelin
10. Doors, Floyd, Skynyrd, Animals, Traffic, and a whole lot more! ~D
edit: Gah! Forgot Bob Marley! He can be in one of the many 10 spots, but probably higher up than the lower tens. Marley is awesome.

I figured I'd do my top 5 current band list. (still making music and wasn't around in the 70's)
1. U2
2. Drive by Truckers
3. Gov't Mule
4. Dave Matthews Band
5. Damn... I'm sure I like someone else, but I can't think of them.

3-Placebo
4-My Chemical Romance

Yeah, the General Electric was good, didn't actually get the CD, I do have Pacifier, it isn't that great, some good songs but yeah. I have only heard Alive off there new CD, sounded pretty good to me.

Off the top of my head without thinking too much about it:

1-Led Zeppelin
2-Queen
3-Pink Floyd
4-Aerosmith
5-Kansas
6-Missing Persons
7-Jeff Beck in all incarnations
8-Jan Hammer in all incarnations
9-Nine Inch Nails
10-Peter Gabriel

Runners up: Rush, The Police, Saga, Journey, U2

For a general rock collection, this would be close. I interpret "top ten" to refer to what I like for whatever reason, not the top ten in skill, popularity, etc.

Their probably the most popular German band in the US. Theres lots of fans of theirs here.

Togakure
03-20-2005, 20:51
I think their initial popularity in the US started with the Matrix soundtrack. I became acquainted with Rammstein and Prodigy from the soundtrack, and expanded into their other stuff from there. I enjoy them both. Wish Prodigy had lasted, as I thought they had a very distinct sound and attitude.

Oh, FYI, that's not Def Leppard, that quote. Neil Young wrote that:
It's better to burn out, than to fade away.
- My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue).

Togakure
03-20-2005, 23:29
Lol ... I just changed it to that after reading Byzantine Prince's sig ... so really I think we'd have to give Alexander credit for it, as he came before both Neil and Def. I attributed it to Def as it was their use of it that came to mind when I read BP's sig. I've always been partial to the attitude.

It has been ages since I thought of Neil Young, but when you mentioned it, I smiled, as we did that song waaaayy back in the first band I was in that actually made money. Loved that ridiculously overdone distortion ... .

I first heard of Rammestein when Du hast was put into rotation on much music in 1997-98, didn't know they were on the Matrix soundtack. Prodigy I first heard of about the same time when breathe was in heavy rotation on much music. Also steppe merc if you've ever seen the meh movie XXX with Vin Deisel Rammestein has a cameo. They are the band on stage in the first nigth club XXX walk into in Prague.

Where in the Matrix did they have Rammstein? I probably missed it.

Togakure

All I remember is that Rammstein is on one of the Matrix soundtrack albums, which my brother has. I think it's from the first Matrix movie, but it might have been from the second.

I do remember that Prodigy is playing in the club that Neo goes to when he "follows the white rabbit," or whatever. I was clubbing a lot back then, and Prodigy was popular on the dance floor at the "harder" clubs that I tended to frequent. I grew to like them enough to buy a CD. "Narayan," Smack my Bitch Up," etc.--good stuff. Need to pull that one out of storage, now that I'm thinking about it ... .

If/where Rammstein's music was actually in the film I can't confirm at the moment, but I can confirm that Du Hast is Track 12 on the original Matrix soundtrack CD. Here's a linkie:

Dug out my Prodigy CD ... man it SUCKS that there are no decent clubs in this hick town ... gah. Miss this stuff something fierce all of a sudden.

It is a pitty that Prodigy didn't last, they were finished before the time I was getting into decent music. Although I do remember liking Fire Starter and Smack My Bitch up when I was 10 ~;p

The whole album is quite good. It was nice to hear a band with a real attitude that didn't seem contrived. So much of the modern day stuff just doesn't seem sincere to me. It sounds planned, marketed, ingenuine.

Mablung

That's because it is. The corporations churn them out of their wonder studios that can make a dying rat sound ok. Anything to scam a quick buck off the young generation.

but i see some of you have included INDIVIDUALS in your lists of BANDS...
