hello i was wondering if its possible to include dead family members in the tree at the start of the game
this is what i wrote in the descr_strat.txt file. the game CTDs when i try to open the family tree button.

character_record Barita, female, command 0, influence 0, management 0, subterfuge 0, age 49, alive, never_a_leader
character_record Sennianus, male, command 5, influence 6, management 4, subterfuge 0, age 72, dead, never_a_leader
character_record Cartimandua, female, command 0, influence 0, management 0, subterfuge 0, age 68, alive, never_a_leader

relative Sennianus, Cartimandua, Barrivendos end
relative Barrivendos, Barita, end

Barrivendos is the only active leader with an army ( i excluded that part for space purposes, but he is in there, with an army and starting position )
i made his father deceased, Sennianus.

edit: wait a minute should i have typed deceased ???? hmmm be back in a sec

"dead" is the correct usage, and only seems to work with women.

According to the template file, the male at the top of the family tree must either be the faction leader, or set to "past_leader". Unfortunately since the template was written, things seem to have changed and the "past_leader" attribute (which you could assign to a dead person) doesn't work. It's quite frustrating because it seems that you can't really have complex family trees showing several previous generations at startup.

One thought that I had about this (I haven't investigated it to see if it's actually doable) is to set up your family tree at the start of the game with everyone still alive (including guys going back as many generations as you want to show up on the family tree), and then have a script that runs on startup to kill off everyone who's supposed to be dead. If it works, you'd effectively be able to have more complex historical family trees.

That would work, but it would doubtless have some undesirable effects. Like, getting fifty death messages at startup.

could you use that same script to close all those death message windows that will inevitably pop up. i know nothing about scripting so if thats a stupid idea i apologize

I don't think so, no. I'm not an expert scripter, though, so perhaps it's possible.

Well you could do this, though its not ideal: Have it kill everyone, diable the AI, end the turn, and Renable the AI. This would clear the messages. You could even have it reset the season if you like..

hmmmmm, i think i would rather just suffer through making my lazy-ass close all the windows

they wouldn't have to close them anyway. They just wouldn't open them. They'd have a whole series of messages on the left for one turn, its not that bad...
