I picked this up last friday. All i can say is WOW! This game has totally blown me away.
The boss fights are some of the best i've ever seen in a game. And the inclusion of the Shenmue style button combination was a stroke of goddamn genius.
Also, the camera is damn good. You can almost excuse the fact that Leon moves like a legless pitbull!
And dying is fun! Just to see all of the different ways that you can die! Not to mention the chainsaw fellas that are reminiscent of leatherface (listen to them scream and you'll know what i'm talking about).
Anyway, as you can probably see, i'd marry this game if i could. It's really that good. If you havn't played it, rent it and see what you think. It'll probably be the best game you'll play for a long time...
Just got it ~:) I cannot wait till I get home!
ps, is it scary?
ps, is it scary?
Allow me to quote myselve. Yes, this game is scary, if not terrifying.

Lol! Well, certain bits scared the hell outta me. I'm one of those 'insisting on playing horror games in the dark' kinda guys, and the first time i heard a high pitched scream, i jumped outta my skin. However, in the time it took me to compose myself...leon's head was already on the floor ~:joker:

Does it still have the crappy controls of the previous Resident Evils? IE: Move forward in the way you are facing, press up on the keypad. To move to one side, you need to spend precious seconds turning in place and THEN moving forward.

Kind of. The camera is behind you at all times, though. And the 'down + B' command means you can do a quick 180 turn. Don't get me wrong, Leon still moves like a tank. But you can excuse it in this game because of the way it's designed.

I excused it in the first two REs, but afterwards I got simply annoyed with it

It feels a lot better because of the dynamic camara, I would at least rent it if I were you. Only the complete awesomeness of the atmosphere should be enough a reason to waste your precious time.

I get enough atmosphere in Fatal Frame and Fatal Frame 2 without having to tangle with the controls.

Well then I suggest you keep playing those, your loss ~:)

Loved the resident evil series since the very begining,
controlls wer not very hard, (eventhough some seem to have difficulties)
i know res 4 is on Nintendos platform now
Any mention of it coming out on the pc? or ps2.
personally i dont know if i will like the new views implimented in the game on a Console, and im shure they would be more at home with a mouse so i hope its on the pc. or going to be,
Any info on this?

It comes to the PS2 in november.
*bumped straight from the depths of oblivion*
Just got RE4 for the ps2. The controls aren't too bad. turning is easy and can be done in the blink of an eye, walking and moving around seems to be pretty easy too. Took some time to get used to the view and the weapon controls (but then again i was never that great at them in the old ones), however once i got it down i have to say i was carving a path through streams of zombified villagers.
back to controls, they feel right at home on the ps2 controler, all it took was patience to get them memorized. The game is also played in widescreen which took some getting used to. It was a bit annoying since if you put it at full screen the image looks stretched and not as good :/ . Yet that doesn't take away from the enjoyment.
As for scary let me sum it up in one smiley: ~ .
there's a lot of times when i've found myself backed up against a wall blasting away at zombies, ammo counter is quickly going down when from my right a zombie kind of guy grabs me and tries to munch on me... Not to mention the guy's who wield the chainsaws and can 1 hit kill you if you dont kill them first. Who are also immune to headshots i might add >.<.
The boss battles are amazing in this game, the first two alone were real pains to fight even when i knew how to take them down! Ammo can be hard to come by at times which makes every bullet a carefuly guided shot. Trust me, your knife won't do you much good against half the enemies passed the first chapter.
Another thing: you WILL die... ALOT. even after i've gotten into the third chapter (my current progress) i'm constantly dieing because everytime i turn around something new is getting thrown at me which takes time to figure out get by. But that is in no means a bad thing, just makes it more fun.
As for leon's speed... well there's a run button too so ~ . besides you want to be moving slow in this game, ammo is hidden everywhere and if you try to blow through it you're gonna find yourself short handed... and quick! *thanks his doom 3 experience*. a good example of this is the shotgun. It can be found early in the game and is VITAL for taking down the chainsaw wielding zombies. However if you didnt lurk around and find it, you're gonna die on those guys.. a lot.. (remember, no headshots on them!)
if you're a fan of the series i'd pick it up, if you're not i'd rent it or borrow it to try it out first to make sure this game is right for you.

Heh, so much for Nintendo's killer-app exclusive. Does the game look significantly different on the PS2 when compared to the Gamecube version?
Nah not really. the only difference i can notice is, according to the box, this is some special edition (though the cost was normal) and includes new bonus chapters for the ps2. *shrug*
Weren't the older RE games rather boring? I mean, if you were into the horror schtick, that is one thing. But if you were into games as games (rather than games as quasi-movies), it seemed to me that RE always fell short...
Has anything changed in the latest version?
Yes. But RE4 is a considerably more action based RE, with much fewer puzzles and less backtracking.

I don't know, having never played another RE game to compare, but I think this game is Game-of-the-Year material. It is beautiful on my GC, and probably one of the top 10 PS2 games as well. And it is certainly fun, one of the few games recently I just like to go back and play (I have such a large back-log that I am always having to start up a new one right after I finish the first).
I think anyone with a GC/PS2 needs to at least rent it.

Hopefully I should be getting it for Christmas, can't wait. :san_cheesy:

I agree whole heartedly! This is the most enjoyable console game i have played for a very long time. The atmosphere of the game is far beyond anything ive seen for a console for many a year. I have only tried it on the GC, so i cannot account for the PS2 version, but if its got more features then its definitely worth a look.
The boss battles are just immense.

-How long is this game?
-How long is this game?
It's quite long, took me about 20 hours to complete the main game on hard. But there are tons of unlockables, and the new ps2 version has even more(and the graphics are just as good if you ask me) , a complete sidequest was added. I never felt the urge to replay the main quest, but minigames like mercenaries (just shoot everything) are terribly addictive. If you like the type of game it will last quite a while.
To balance the praise a bit, the game is not without flaws. The gameplay is fun throughout the game, but there are some area's that feel a bit zelda-esque. Especially one episode with a giant walking statue is just out of place, or better, downright silly.
Aw, c'mon fragony. You mean to tell me after getting the uber weapons of doom, you didn't have an urge to go back and take out some frustrations on bosses who were trouble the first time around? Or play through pro mode?

I buy a lot of games, there is always something else to do  Maybe I will give it a another run later, it is all just too fresh in my memory for now. No frustrations about the bosses though, once you know what to do they are very easy, most of them I killed at first try, only Krauser gave me any trouble.
I played this long ago for the GC and it was a blast, even in groups, despite it being a single-player game. Disc 2 is good for a kind of hot-seat tournament play (see how many points you can rack up and pass the controller to the right). As much as they weren't proper zombies and I'm a stickler, the alien-looking parasites make the game more interesting than plain old zombies from the other RE games. The controls are better than the other games in the series, so it's not as clunky. Come to think of it, very few things are similar to to the old games in RE 4.
I haven't played the PS2 version, but I hear that the hardware doesn't hold up as well as it did on the GC.
PS: Suplexing zombies is totally awesome.
