According to this article here (http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=92&type=expert&pid=11) it is.

Any one confirm this. I am getting a 19" LCD with native 1280x1024 res.

You can set the resolution to 1280x1024 (edit: other resolutions are of course possible as well) in the preferences.txt -file. The resolution sliders in the game may show different values, but it works.

You can't just modify preference.txt as you want. If your max res. is restricted 1024*768( in the option ), you can't just set 1280*1024 by doing that way.
Max res. is decided by cpu, ram, video memory, etc as predescribed in descr_auto_optimise_options.txt and it seems not very accurate.

Changing max res., you can reference this thread in official forum.

Worked just fine for me. Rechecked the resolutions & color depths it uses, and monitor info displays 1280x1024x32 @ 100 Hz just as it should (using a CRT here) in both strategy map and battles. Resolution sliders & dropboxes do show odd things, but everything works as it should.

I have a middle-grade machine (A 3000+, 1 gig pc3200 ddr, 9800 Pro 128 MB) and it didn't display resolutions greater than 1280x960. I went for the simple solution and edited preferences.txt directly. *shrug* Actually, it does appear that I can modify preferences.txt just as I want. ~;)

Yes, you can modify the preferences file yourself. The optimizations file will allow up to 2048x1536 if your specs are sufficiently high. You could also modify this file to give yourself direct access in the menu to higher resolutions.
