Done before I'm sure, but a timeless classic really. Pretty self-explanatory. Post comments about your "friends" as you wish.

I prefer NOT to have a pet, since I believe it is wrong to capture an animal simply for the amusement of the self.

I rescued mine from probable starvation out in the park. He'd been out there for quite a while and was wasted thin. I then got him a buddy from the local pound, where the second lad's chances of missing adoption and getting euthanized was quite high. I don't get the impression that either of them ever felt like they were imprisoned. I think they've grown quite fond of me, as I have of them. Well, only one left now, the original laddie. He's black, Razz was white. My embodiment of Yin and Yang, and their personalities are/were pretty much that too.

EDIT: D'oh! Forgot to mention my choice was "cats."

Then there would be no dogs or cats left, is that better ?

Same thing with vegetarians, would it be better if there were no more pigs, cows, chickens, etc. ?

I agree wholeheartedly, except for the cats and dogs, which are domesticated freaks.

No. See above.

If you mean purely domesticated farm animals, the answer is yes.

I love dogs. I think it is quite appropriate for a contemporary domesticated dog to live with humans. The ones that aren't hybrid freaks (like toys, etc.) can live independently quite successfully in the wild, but they are best suited for human companionship.

Now now gentlemen ... this is the Frontroom and not the place for unnecessary controversy. I think the intent of this thread is clear to any reasonable person, so if someone feels the need to debate the morality of pets, please spawn your own thread in the Backroom. Thanks.

Been around animals all my life - except for some time while I was deployed overseas.

Sometimes I have come convinced that its not humans that have animals has pets - but animals who have human servants.

However given a preference I will always have a dog - either Sheltie's or Lab mixes which I have been around since a tiny little lad. A Lab taught me how to swim. As a child I would jump into the horse watering hole - filled by a old fashion windmill - and the Lab would jump in with me and we would both do the doggy paddle swim.

Lots of fun growing up with animals.

You poor sods who don't appreciate the company of animals have never benefited from the companionship and the relationship that is between a caring person and their animals.

However I don't see horses as pets - they are more like an extremely expensive hobby. However they are also a useful tool for ranch and farm life - even in todays world.

Hehe ... I was mischieviously thinking of Beirut when I included the unusual options, as it seems he is quite fond of both dogs and women. As I forgot to disable the mutually exclusive nature of poll choices, he might find himself in a bit of a quandry on this one ~D.

A dog - my parents always had a dog since I went to elementary school and just got a little puppy again (the last dog unfortunately died in January).
I am looking forward to have a first look at the cute little thing on Saturday ~:)

Has to be a dog, for me. I love both cats and dogs - some cats can just come up to you in the street and want affection, such loving creatures - but dogs are just so dependable and selfless with their time, they don't get in huge moods like people do.

I voted for rats. The other rodents listed aren't worth the time of day though.

As and when I move out of London I'll get a dog, either a border collie or an Airedale terrier. Not fair to have either of those breeds in a town though.

I'm a cat man. They're suaver than dogs, and you have to work for their affection. I've got two, a tabby female with a white underbelly called Puzzle, and a black tom called Basil.

I had a rat for a pet back in junior high school. I attended a special summer school session that had us doing some cool stuff, including making stained glass windows and training rats to do tricks. After the class was over I was the lucky one who got to take our mascot home. Her name was Harley and she was too cool. Got her a wheel which she peeled out on all night long, and I loved to watch her tear up her fresh newspaper with relish and make her cave in the mess. My mom liked her too and even let us keep her in a rather large cage on the kitchen floor (which was unprecendented for a Japanese mom; but we had to keep her living space immaculately clean, of course). Man I loved that rat. She was hella smart.

cats first, dogs come a close second
had cats for most of my life (have 2 now), had a bunch of stray dogs on and off - they were not living _in_ my house, ofc, butI'd bring em in occasionally to feed them, and pet them, and especially during winters, so they can warmp up a bit.
otherwise I'd just play outside with em - they loved kids, and obeyed them almost blindly.
unfortunately, I don't think a dog would be happy in the middle of a city, among steel, glass and such - but if I ever move into a house with a decent yard, or in some reasonably remote neck of the woods, my cats will get some bigger companions ;P

Well isn't a pony a type of horse?? If not I guess I'm revealing myself as a city boy. I certainly couldn't take a pony anywhere in my home town ... the only ones allowed are the ones pulling the tourist buggies in Old Sacramento, and the ones ridden by state troopers in Capitol Park. But that's pretty cool if you can tote them around where you are.

I would have to say a good dog. Dogs that run off are not as good as most cats that I have met, but a good dog is better than a good cat. Dogs are also more open with emotions. My dog hugs me with her front paws when I get home, my cat is nowhere to be found.

He probably knows you like the dog better. Cats are just as affewctionate if not more so than dogs. But at least the dont drool and slobber all over you. They also tend to be much cleaner and dont stink when their wet. ~D

I like them both equally most of the time, the dog is only better for playing with and as a greeter. You cannot have a Chesapeake Bay Retriever sit in your lap while you play an FPS or RTS, it just does not work with a 70-75 pound dog; but a cat can and will sit in my lap while I play. It is nice to be able to get some quality time with the cat during load times. Anyway, I like dogs a tiny bit more than cats. One advantage to cats is if you have two you can watch them bicker every now and then. Better than the Coliseum...

the reasoning behind this is that dogs look up to humans too much
cats look down on humans
but pigs treat us as equal!

Well a few people agree with me that ferrets are the animal of choice !!

They are affectionate, playful and need next to zero maintenance (much like a cat, but oh so unlike a human female).

I have two (ferrets, not human females): an albino and a sable - had them both from kits and my life wouldn't be the same without the little buggers.

So here's to ferrets, this man's second best friend (girlfriend is in the roon) ~

Their sleepy animals from day one. In fact theres studies on cats sleeping. They have to save all that energy up to go hunting. Your perception is off. Kittens like human babies sleep more than adult cats do. Its just that they like children are so full of energy when their awake.

Sasaki Kojiro
03-28-2005, 21:10
The smaller the animal, the faster the metabolism, the more sleep it needs. Mice get like 18, cats get 14, humans get 8, elephants get 4. Or something like that, I can't remember the numbers exactly.

The point I was making (I admit I didn't make it very well) is that cats (mine anyway) slept more regularly as kittens. They tended to sleep in the night and awake in the day. Now, they sleep most of the day and only go out for 4 hours at most.

Me too.. i had them when i lived in New York and bigger animals werent an option my parents were willing to accept.

Now ive got horses, dogs and cats, yet i still have 2 rats.

They are just as clean as cats, just as friendly as dogs, and smarter than both of them.

It takes a bit of work to domesticate them because they dont come that way like most dogs/cats, but if you do, theyre just as fun without the mess. ~;)

Forgot to include wabbits on the list so I guess they would fall under common rodent as well.

We had bunnies for awhile. I remember once my dad got so fed up with us chasing them around the backyard that he chased us around the backyard with a stick to "show us what it prolly felt like." Didn't like rabbits much after that. As I couldn't pay my dad back until many years after, I took it out on the poor bunnies. They got to be in pretty good shape though, all that running around while dad was at work.
