View Full Version : Maps in the \base\ directory?

When I was choosing the site for a new historical battle for RTR in the battle map editor, I noticed that the map wasn't the one RTR used. So, suspecting that the map used was in \base\ rather than \campaign\, I copied all the appropriate files from the RTR folder to \base\. Then I went to the editor . . . and it CTDd when it would normally display the map. Anyone know what could be wrong? Anything else \base\ is used for?

This may be a stupid question, but did you delete map.rwm before trying to load the game?

I didn't get it to work when I wanted to get a map from my Wheel of Time Total War World. I just assumed it wasn't possible... Am I wrong?

I just assumed it wasn't possible... Am I wrong? That makes no sense, though. The base map can't be hardcoded.

I believe the editor uses the map in the data\world\maps\base folder, but the image it shows is not autogenerated or something, it's using an image from the data\menu folder if I'm not mistaking. So you wont see that it uses the new campmap, but it actualy does.

Hallelujah! It works! I don't know what did it, exactly, so I'll just list everything I did.
1) I copied the entire contents of \rome_total_realism\ to \imperial_campaign\, then all appropriate files (i.e., ones already there) to \base\.
2) I deleted map.rwm, map_heights.hgt, and map_FE.tga in \imperial_campaign\ and \base\.
3) I replaced map_composite.tga in data\menu\ (thanks to [cF]Adherbal for the tip) with map_heights.tga, given that it's rather more easily understandable than any of the other map files (except maybe map_regions.tga).
Now when I go to the battle editor, I see map_heights.tga; I can maneuver around it correctly, and the tiles load correctly. If anyone else wants to try this, let me know if it works for you.

I couldn't remember if I did, so I just tried. No luck. I don't suppose EB's gotten it working? We do all of our work in base, we never tried it as a provincial campaign because we change so much. I wouldn't have anything specific to help you with since all we do is replace the existing files, delete map.rwm, and it works just fine. This requires you approach it from the standpoint of using the Imperial Campaign rather than a Provincial one, however.
I see you've figured it out on your own though.

Wait, so you use the Imperial Campaign rather than the Provincial Campaign? I didn't know that was possible. Why don't we use the Imperial Campaign? I'll have to ask Tyr.
Anyway, it turns out that I have to delete map.rwm between each loading of the map, or else I get a CTD without error. This could use a little more work.

from my experience that means there is an error somewere in the campfiles. I believe it ignores some errors the first time when it composing the map.rwm file, but not when loading it. Do you use the show_err parameter ?

Yeah, I use show_err. Nothing turns up. Any idea what sort of campfile error it could be? The RTR campaign works fine.

hm have you tried using the rwm file from RTR campaign folder in the base folder ? IIRC I just copy pasted everything from my imperial campaign folder to base and I dont have any problems. If it still crashes try renaming or deleting the base folder and see what happens (can't garantee that will work at all).

Don't know if it's useful to you but, if you change the imperial map radically, then there is a very big chance that custom/historical battles will not work properly. The reason is that those maps are taken from the imperial campaign. If there is now a sea your army will drown immediately.
