So, I was in bar on saturday, and it was a fancy cocktail bar. When in Rome etc, so I had a cocktail (not knowing all that much about cocktails I always have a whiskey sour in these situations).

As I was drinking the cocktail, it came to me that all cocktails, even ones made with whiskey, are girls drinks. No doubt this is the reason cocktail bars only ever have terrible beer too, to make men drink the cocktails. So I adjourned to the spit and sawdust pub down the road that I usually go to and everything was right again.

But on Sunday it occured to me that Hemingway drank cocktails, and he was a man's man if ever there was one. (Not like that. He was a ladies man too.)

So now I want to know, cocktails, girls drink or not?

Cocktails rock. It's only in socially screwed up England that they're viewed any differently.

Though, some cocktails are... somewhat "girly" - a Pink Lady, for instance, would look incongruous in the hands of most men.

I drank some mojitos in the Bodeguita del Medio in Havana (Hemingway's fav bar) and I must say those coctails do the job perfectly ~D

Bourbon, beer, and broads.

Them's are the things real men imbibe. :knight:

My cocktail of choice is a Long Island Ice Tea, and with 5 shots of spirits in it how can it be a girls drink. That being said I know a few girls who could drink most men under the table.

Incidentally, why are they called cocktails?

some are, some aren't, it all depends on how they are made and what is put into them, but if anyone ever says a martini is a girls drink they are off their face, what is a real drink then? bourbon hahaha! bourbon is for bogan dickheads who have less then two braincells to rub together (there is a great difference between bourbon and tennesee whiskey which i like or any other american whiskey) again what do you classify as a cocktail, is a depth charge a cocktail (for those who don't know a depth charge is a shot of dark rum in a pot of beer)
cocktails are definately not girly, what is girly on the other hand is vodka premixes.
thanks,

And I am gratified that bad taste (as well as bad spelling and grammar) runs rampant on that prison island of yours for it leaves more lovely bourbon for the rest of us.

Tequila, mate, dont forget Tequila.

Besides, there ARE coctails that will make the strongest of you pale. For your contemplation,
Fighting gnome: Tabasco, Gin, Vodka, Tequila. - You only need 3 shots of this.
Or any of the Martini+Vodka+soft drink combos.

It all depends on the cocktail. A grasshopper, sure, that's a froo-froo drink.

A prairie fire? I challenge you to have more than 2.

I personally don't drink cocktails because I prefer to find a fine whiskey or beer and enjoy it's particular taste, but I don't think it's a measure of machismo.

And to whomever said they like sour mash whiskey but not bourbon, (*cough* Dessa *cough*) the only real difference is that you cannot call a sour mash whiskey a bourbon unless it's made in Bourbon county, Kentucky.

A cocktail is an alcoholic drink mixed from several ingredients. Some of the non-alcoholic ingredients may mask the taste of raw spirits and be considered "girlie" by the he-man set. A Long Island Ice Tea is a good example of this. Tastes like sweetened ice tea, boy I can pound these claims Mr. Manly, after several quick ones you are asking for the license plate of that truck that just hit you. I like a Bloody Mary myself. My wife prefers a magarita. http://www.nightclub.com/magazine/April01/cocktail.html

Sames credits the proliferation of the drink to her friends, John Wayne, Fred MacMurray and Lana Turner
You wouldn't be calling John Wayne a girlie man, would ya pilgrim ? :smoking:

SwordMaster, I promised God once that if he let me live, I would never drink Tequila again.

Occasionally, in the right setting (e.g., on vacation at some sunny place, Thai restaurant), I would go for a cocktail.

Otherwise I prefer straight stuff - wine, scotch, beer

I would not generally say that cocktails are "girly drinks" though.

only girls drink cocktails, that is true when men drink them as well.

the only "cocktail" i ever drink, is 100% pure vodka in a glass.

Normally, beers will do just fine ~

Mmm, Bloody Mary... forgot about those. Technically though, those don't count as cocktails, they're for medicinal purposes (curing your hangover the next day).

Don, all alcoholic beverages are for medicinal purposes. ~;)

Cant drink wine after a memorable night out with my rugby teammates when I downed 3 bottles of red wine in 3 hours on my own... Well, probably "memorable" is not the word here as the wine part is pretty much everything I remember...

theres a difference between a sour mash whiskey and a bourbon, bourbons are not filtered through charcoal like the whiskeys are, any of you who have ever drunk ethanol know what unfiltered booze tastes like, also my grammar and spelling are really bad on the internet because i don't care, but from my experience of bourbon drinkers they have all been the same, retarded bogans who destroy stuff and beat random people up, now bundy rum drinkers are normally boys from the west and they just fight each other, so they are fine and i don't know why they banned rum in the city and valley of brisbane but not bourbon.

Dessa, some bourbon is excellent.
And besides, most bourbon drinkers are southerners in white suits who call themselves "Colonel."

I always had vodka based cocktails.....

Mainly Black Russians (Vodka, coke and Tia maria) and on a Friday/ saturday night would have about 10.

dessa14
03-30-2005, 08:29
ah black russians, when we mix them we use kaluaha and vodka but not coke.
but white russians make you sick so avoid drinking them.
and DAA all the bourbon i've ever drunk tastes the same, that sickly sweet flavour. i guess its an australian thing not to like your booze sickly sweet.
and bourbon drinkers in australia are all bogan dicks so avoid them at nearly all costs, ive drunk some good bourbon before though, like makers mark and what not...

i normally drink neat scotch or irish whisky, two fingers in a tumbler, or i drink anything else with alcohol content in it.
thanks,
dizzy

OT, whats a Bogan please? I'm guessing its someone from a part of Australia, but where?

I'm afraid I have only the haziest idea about American whiskys, and seeing as I have quite a good idea about scotch and Irish whisky I rarely if ever drink them. Am I right that they grain isn't malted barley but something else, and do they use old sherry barrels? Surely not, they would have to come a long way.

Its just an availability thing though, if I was in the states no doubt it would be American whisky all the way and no scotch. There's no point beating one sort of whisky up for not being the same as another, and there's plenty of terrible scottish whisky about after all.

dessa14

not from part of australia, but from all of australia.
a bogan is the same as a revhead, except that the only things they drive are old commodores with giant wings on the back of them, or souped up hyundai xcels with wings bigger then the car is long.
oh and they don't have two braincells to rub together and go around destroying stuff because they have no respect for anything.
where as the rum drinkers are just violent to themselves, and get into brawls with their best friends for fun.
in american whiskeys they use a combination of grains and stuff like that, and create what is called a sour mash.

thanks,
dizzy

I'm a tequila man myself (when I drink, which isn't often anymore). Straight up, no lime or salt (and definitely no mix, unless it's garbage tequila like Jose Cuervo; if it is then I'll do a Margarita on the rocks). If it's good stuff I'll often just pour a snifter of it and drink it like brandy.

Because I like it straight, I usually stick to the better tequilas. Standards are Don Julio, Heradura (sp?), Patron--resposados and anejos. My favorite is Chaumucos ("Little Devil," fancy that ...), but it's expensive and rather hard to find. Fortunately, my lil bro's fiancee is Mexican, her parents live in Guadalahara, and they come up and visit often.

As far as "girlie" or not, I'm not usually one to to make "macho" judgements of others on things like this. "Whatever floats your boat," I say. I know what I like.

Cocktails are ok. In the pub i drink in they used to do cocktails.

2 of my favorite were:

French kiss: Perno, Vodka, Blackcurrent squash and Lemonade

Green Monster - I cant for the life of me tell you what is in it - Think it was Reef, Blue Caracuo (sp) Lemonade and something else
