until after the expansion is out to buy it?

Express answers in time or patches.

I won't touch it until I see decent reviews in the forums.

I am too much disappointed to buy an expansion, mostly with the CA post-sell support rather than with the game itself.

I won't touch it or consider it until the first patch is released. Even then I am unsure whether I am ever going to buy another CA product.

okay, every1 likes to complain bout the bugs and things that couldve been better in the game but i still think that RTW is one of my favorite games so im gonna buy the expansion right when it comes out, y wait for a patch cuz it will be fun neways then after the patch comes out it will seem better.

I will probably buy it almost immediately, if for no other reason than to see how it stacks up against the R:TR and/or EB mods. I love the TW series as a whole, and I play R:TW (or R:TR) as much as my wife will allow. NO game is ever perfect, and I have faith that CA will do better with the expasion and/or with their next effort. I tried going back to M:TW, but I missed the more complex strategic aspects of R:TW too much.

I'll probably buy it, but feel like a scab - the kind of person during a work strike who crosses the picket line and goes back to work, regardless of the strike conditions. RTW was released in a very poor state. The patch improved things a little, but CA and Activision haven't done a great deal on the public relations things to make up for it. That said, I applaud those at CA who have actually tried to help the community; some of them obviously care. I still love RTW, although only because I've spent so many hours modding it add some kind of fun factor. If the expansion adds enough, then I'll want to get it.

i'll buy it straight away, thats why im hanging around :gossip: in the back of my mind i know, CA can redeem themselves, but i'll not hold my breath, but if its not a step forward, then im gone like a cool breeze :toilet:

Unless I see rave reviews *here* and few substantial bugs, I won't be in any hurry to buy. I'll be waiting for the bargain bin pricing. If the patches or mods don't get it into a workable enough state, I'll pass altogether.

At this point, I'm disappointed enough in the lack of proper support for RTW that I am of the opinion that the XPack should be free.

Unless this forum is raving over how good it it, I won't buy it.

I've quit playing R:TW and gone back to one of the best games ever built SMAC.

I'll keep monitoring this forum, but CA will unlikely see any of my money soon.

IF I buy it, I'll buy it when all of the following statements are true:

1) A few weeks have passed since the release of the XP itself/a patch to the XP
2) I don't see any major bugs being discussed here for the duration of those weeks
3) It's priced at the budget level at most

No more bona fide purchases at full price.

I will not buy any expantions for this game as that would mean id need to reinstall it,
And it just wastes space on my hard disk as it sux to much to play.

I have expressed my feelings in other posts and i will reitterate this

If CA make a nother update for the game,
And that sux as well
I will smash my RTW cd's in to pieces So I will never be tempted to Reinstall it Ever again

Craterus
03-31-2005, 21:11
Instead of smashing it to pieces, you could sell it or give it as a gift to someone who might enjoy the game more than you did.

Regarding expansions, I would probably buy it after hearing some positive reviews and finding out exactly what's improved and wether an expansion is worth buying.

Unless it promises substantial AI development, I wouldn't buy it. Or it would just be another game where you are in for an easy but long drawn out process of conquering the world. I need challenge, darn it!

I wonder what the patch policy for the expansion would be?

Probably no better than for RTW. AFAIK CA has historically tried to fix all problems in one or two mega-patches and refuse to do more. That worked reasonably well for the previous incarnations but I dont think that policy will work for a game this new, this complex, and with this many bugs.

I'm not exactly happy with the AI or the bugs. However, I love this game still and I continue to play it to this day. I will buy it as soon as it comes out.

I will almost certainly get it but not on the day of release. I need to read some feedback first. RTW; while a great game; is the last game I will ever buy as soon as it hits the shelves.

It depends on the content of the X-pack.

1) Mini-Campaign Map? (not again... :dizzy2:)
2) Unit-speed and Kill-rate sliders. (Je'Rome G said he'll mention it to the others).
3) 3D Naval Battles? (c'mon CA, surprise us!)
4) BIGGER Battle Map? (eliminate the red-line already).
5) Bugs fixed? (I'm pretty IF they neglect to release a patch 1.3 those will be remedied).

Those are the main sticking points I can think of from the top of my head. ~:)

Prolly buy it, tho not neccesarily right away.

I'm only in it for the mods anyway (never have bothered to finish a vanilla game excepting Shogun).

Do know that somewhere along the time-line the modding community will embrace whatever changes have been made, so I'll need the expansion one way or the other, lol. By embrace, I mean that 'everything' gets used one way or the other, and rumors about some files useful to modders being included in the expansion are enough to sway ME, eh?

All power to the Modders!

While RTW may be buggy as hell, it is still a game with no equivalent with its blend of strategy and tactics.

I will shamelessly takes all that is offered to me...

I will only buy it if several conditions are met. First of all, the major bugs in the current version must be fixed in a free patch, so that people who do not care for the expansion can still have a working game. Secondly, the expansion must not introduce any new major bugs, or if this is the case, this must be patched. Thirdly, I have to hear some pretty impressive reviews on this forum. Then I'll consider it. Otherwise, it's just not happening.

Would someone start a poll? I'm very curious as to just what the numbers are. Numbers can go a long way toward convincing companies.

I love RTW, and I don't think it's unplayable, but since it has been released it has had some major bugs, I can understand it because no one can code without making any mistake. But IMHO CA has to make an effort to correct them.

We have bought an expensive game (At least for me) and we want it to work out as it is expected. If it has problems CA should correct them !

The worst thing is the current situation has been lived before, MTW/VI had a major bug (56 year dead) detected a few time later since it has been released and the patch was only released after heavy community pressure and some month later.

To be honest I don't feel CA is doing they best effort to make costumers happy. They has told us "no new patches are going to be released".

Sorry ??? Patches have to be released at least meanwhile there are major bugs.
You cannot decide if you are going to release more patchs or not only thinking in economical cost to code them.

Finally I am not going to buy an expansion.

First I'll read the reviews, and then I'll wait for the typical fanboy wave to pass ("Oh boy I just got the XP and this has got to be the best game ever. THANK YOU extremely much CA!!! PS Can't wait to actually install it on my hard drive!") and see what the more thoughtful contributors have to say.

I'd prefer to wait until it's reviewed by some websites and some respected veterans on the org. But if they take too long to do so (too long = 2 weeks), I may just buy it and test it myself, especially if it's only like $20 or something.

Honestly, I am in the kinda-pissed-at-CA camp b/c I still enjoy MTW more than RTW, but if the patch significantly improves areas of RTW that I don't like, and/or add in really fun new stuff, it'll probably be worth getting, even if it introduces new bugs.

So much of this is relative.
If bugs = experience-crippling: No
If bugs < experience-crippling: Probably
If cost > improved enjoyment: No
If cost < improved enjoyment: Yes
etc.

I hope the patch...
-SIGNIFICANTLY improves battlefield AI (esp. with cavalry)
-makes RTW battle maps more like MTW maps, i.e. more than one hill and forest
-adds ability to customize shield icons, unit colors, and name them with an easy-to-use ingame interface
-SIGNIFICANTLY improves unit pathing in cities
-Brings back the MTW Alt+click unit-facing feature. Rotating units is too inaccurate
-reduces the negative modifiers for Generals who don't move during turns (for defense is important too!)
-reduces the negative modifiers for Governors when you have too much money (Gods forbid)
-make the wonder bonuses permanent

Sorry, got a bit off topic, but if the above are in the xpac, I'll likely get it.

Based on the fairly obvious assumption that no further patches are forthcoming, I think it would be very prudent to wait to see if the expansion does indeed fix the severe issues plaguing Rome at present.

I certainly won't spend money on the expansion if the loadgame and protectorate bugs and the overall AI isn't confirmed fixed or improved.

I'm already fighting my moral self about the prospect of forking out money for another CA product to fix the original one.

Turbo

Right now, I don't have any interest in purchasing any more flawed products from a company that doesn't give a damn about doing the right thing.

I won't be buying until I read here about the bugs and see CA's response to the players requests for a patch. More importantly AFTER they release and patch and see what will be their attitude will be regarding any future patch releases.

If the same attitude from CA and CA moderators are the same as after patch1.2 then I'll not be buying anything from them.

Shame as I've been an avid fan of the Total War games since STW but the responses (or lack of them from CA) have left me in a very bitter state about anything else from this company.

Cheers

I always bought TW games as soon as I had the opportunity. Funny - I got RTW from a friend travelling abroad, one week after official release.

But RTW somehow made me smarter. Thank you CA. Next time, I'm gonna wait, check the .org for feedback and decide.

From the gist of this thread, only the "fanboys" (as you call them) will be buying the expansion pack when it comes out. If that is the case, what kind of Xpack reviews do you think will be posted here at the Org? A few of you in the wait-and-see crowd are going to have shell out some money and "take one for the team" so the rest of you can get a legitimate review. :laugh4:

I'll wait for the typical fanboy wave to pass ("Oh boy I just got the XP and this has got to be the best game ever. THANK YOU extremely much CA!!! PS Can't wait to actually install it on my hard drive!")

Ah ha! That's rich. And it's exactly the way some players actually behave. I've seen people defending a bug that they had admittedly never seen or read about, giving a very inaccurate description of how it works and stating that the bug couldn't be a problem based on that inaccurate description.

As for how we'll know how the expansion is, I figure that there are a few optimists that are still of the opinion that Creative Assembly will do well but who are not beyond discovering the truth. They are only a little behind us in their quickness to realize what side Creative Assembly's bread is buttered on, and I expect that the expansion will push them over the edge. The resulting reviews will give us the information which we need to know that the expansion is worth buying.

Of course, if this doesn't happen and all reviews are positive, then I can only conclude that perhaps Creative Assembly has amended their evil ways. That will mean that I am an optimist with masochistic tendencies, no doubt.

I will drool and whine and bitch from the second I hear it is coming until the second I get a copy into my greedy little hands.

Bugs and complaints aside, I am completely addicted to the series. I have not played or purchased another game outside of the TW series since MTW.

Call me what you like. This series is the best thing to happen to strategy games PERIOD. Nothing compares. It is like a combination of civilization and a superior real time game with better organization. Formations instead of individuals units! Brilliant! And don't even think of calling the formations in rise of nations worth a nickle. While formations may not be a new concept, the use of them in this series is wonderful.
