View Full Version : Best Way To Improve Unit Graphics

I've come back to MTW after a looooooooong break, and I must admit I'm a bit of a graphics whore, at least where the matter of unit graphics are concerned (everything else is forgivable). So after RTW I'm a bit spoiled~D

Assuming one has a machine that can handle whatever MTW can dish out what is the best settings one can set to get the best looking unit graphics?

Barring or even including that are there any mods out there with substantially improved unit graphics or at least better/CLEARER looking ones?

Oh and mods that a dinky little 56k dial-up modem could actually handle downloading, though feel free to name other ones in the spirit of the thread, as hopefully this thread won't just be helping me. ~:)

I thought I remembered a 'set-up' option for MTW where one could set unit detail, but I must have been mistaken because after extensive looking I couldn't find it so I must have imagined it from some other game ~

Like I said, it was a long break ~;)

You can only up the resolution and turn the smoke and pirotechnic effects on/up.

I'm not aware of any no.

There aren't many mods for any games of less than 100MB or therabouts, especially if they were to be graphical as you require. I was a 'victim' of 56k for too long. I finally got dsl and look back on those bad times of alot of waiting, frequent disconnection and corrupted downloads as "ye bad olde days".

You're thinking of the "unit size" under the performance options. This is the number of men in the unit and has nothing to do with the quality of the sprite used. Different levels of detail would require separate complete sprite sets for each level, as the units are effectively just 2D bitmap images, not textured models as in rtw.

The Hellenic Total War mod (HTW) has completely new graphics that are a step above the original, slightly grainy look that came with MTW.

The graphics were done (maybe all of them) by a Portuguese graphic artist named Flip. If you look for his posts in the HTW threads under "Hosted Mods" you should be able to find examples of his work posted.

It's nicer than the usual MTW graphics because he created 3D models of the units first, than used the models to create the angled shots that are used to display MTW animation.

Of course, it's not quite as flashy as RTW because it still uses the MTW engine, but it's a clean, colorful, improvement.

I wouldn't worry too much about downloading any of the mods with a 56k line. That's the speed I use and I just start the download as I go to bed. A few hours later it finishes up, and it's ready for me in the morning. You might want to get a free download manager like "GetRight" so you won't lose the part you've already downloaded if your connection fails.

Good luck.
