Have anyone ever got improved generals bodyguards when upgrading a settlement to the highest level?
I have upgraded settlements to huge cities with factions like Julii, Carthage The Seleucid Empire and Parthia, but yet i have seen nothing to improved bodyguards.
I guess the bodyguards of Parthia would have been very useful in battles if they were upgraded to cataphracts, as those you see when playing a custom battle.

With patch 1.2 every faction got their improved generals bodyguard after the marian reforms.

I`m still running ver 1.0, so that`s probably why i`ve never got them.
I have a dial-up connection, so i haven`t bothered downloading ver 1.2 yet.

I started a game with 1.1 and am still continuing it using the 1.2 patch and i still have no improved bodyguards.

Some factions are missing the upgraded bodyguards in 1.2. They added a tag in the unit files to designate updated bodyguards, but forgot some ("unplayable" factions I think).

EDIT - long thread, gist is Scythia, Parthia and Thrace

Actually, it's just Pontus and Scythia.
They have them in custom battle, but not in campaign (bug).

Brits have no upgarded general netiher in custom battale, nor campaign (not a bug, but a feature).

As for Thrace it does have upgraded bodyguard, but it has same stats as the unupgraded one (feature or bug, decide yourself).

if the marian reforms have already occured in your 1.1 game, then patching to 1.2 won't help upgrade your generals. you will have to load a game from that campaign that took place BEFORE you got your marian reforms.

You might want to try asking a friend with broadband to download the patch and burn you a CD.

Dial up is unmanageable when patches get this big. However, some download managers might allow you to snag over a few nights, etc.

Download managers are must.
As well as night time downloading.

I think you can take 50MB for one night, so it's not so bad.

Try downloading 150MB patches I've seen.

My spec:
-56k software modem
-analog telephone central (I have no idea is this good english translation)
-with doubled lines (two users with different number have same line, so no both can use line at same time, very annoying for internet active users)
-real speed up to 33.6k
-prone to disconnection during the day (read: MP uselss during the day)

Now i have downloaded and installed the 1.2 patch succsessfully, and it`s almost like a new game!

But I note that in 1.2 the improved bodyguards will come first after the marius event. But what i you destroy all the roman factions before the marius event has occurred. Will they then come?

I think other factions other than the Romans just need to build the highest goverment building to get the upgraded bodygaurd unit's.
seems a bit unlogical to actually wait till after 220 to even get a chance to get the upgraded bodyguard

no, it does seem to be tied to the reforms. i haven't heard any reports that say otherwise. indeed if the romans are wiped out before, i think it's true that the bodyguards will never upgrade

I have once get those improved generals bodyguards.. when I was playing Parthia. It was a sad moment when I had to use heavy cavalry instead of skirmisher cavalry.

My general is still accompanied by chariot archers but I know there's such thing as Egyptian general...

Why don't I have that unit? The Romans have had their reforms because I took on a Scipii army with loads of Urban Cohort and Legionary Cohort...

After you have installed 1.2, the level of the settlement doesn`t count anymore, you´ll have to wait to the marius event regardless of faction to get the upgraded bodyguards.

It does at least say so in the 1.2 readme file..
