What's the function of the map.wfc file? Historical battles don't seem to run without it, but they did before 1.2. Can they be done away with? It's just that it would really, really stink if RTR had to package an extra 20 MB in its next version just for the historical battles.

I'm not sure. I assumed that since with the battle editor you can edit the terrain of the map (from any tile you pull in) it is needed to save the actual battle map for a scenario.

I wouldn't sweat the historical's too much anyway. Most of them are rather non-historical. 1. Missing Indian elephant vs. African Elephant clash at Raphia that was critical. 2. unit upgrades on steroids for almost all battles. 3. Telamon has wardogs, but no naked fanatics or chariots. Rome has archers, Roman cav (rather than Equites) and way too many triarii. The Gauls are not arranged in two lines back to back facing both Roman armies. 4. Similar stuff in other battles.

I've been considering rebuilding Telamon with representative inits and Gaul unit facing. I've actually got the units worked out in a rudimentary fashion. Haven't felt like doing the scripting, but it doesn't look all that hard.

Yes the map.wfc files are the battlefield, they just contain the heights and buildings and stuff. We know this for sure, since thats how you make a custom tile. I don't know about historical battles not working without them though....

My bad, turns out they work without them just fine.

I wouldn't sweat the historical's too much anyway. Most of them are rather non-historical.That's why I'm working on them for RTR. ;) Anyway, we use NinjaCool's historical battles, which are a lot better than vanilla.
