I just started playing MTW -- awesome game! Wish I had gotten it with Viking Invasion, can't seem to find it in the States at all.

I'm playing my first campaign as the Almohads and doing reasonably well... took out Spain and then Egypt, now I'm beating back the French and German Crusades, haven't even had a chance to play my Jihad yet.

Anyway, my first ruler died and his heir took over. The problem is that he doesn't seem to have any children. He does have 5 brothers (there was an amusing message about how his father proved his potency by siring so many heirs), and of them the second and the fourth would make awesome rulers. I tried knocking off the first by letting him stand down an attempt by the French to take back Burgundy, but he and his 3 units of AUM's and 1 of desert archers held back about 1000 French knights, calvary, archers, and peasants. He picked up 2 command stars and the "last stand" virtue. Oh well... his younger brother is still better, but at this rate, as one of the guides states, he might just end up being an idiot savant general. (with 3 acumen he's not that bad).

Is my king having trouble having children, or are they not showing up on the list, or what? He's getting up there in years, and I want to know whether I should knock his brother off or worry more about potential idiot children. Those sperm do degrade over time, you know!

worst comes to worst you can use the .unfreeze. cheat to get a newborn baby boy on the next turn. though keep in mind it takes him a number of years to mature ~;)

He might not be married! View your ruler's profile and if he doesn't have a wedding ring next to his picture, there's your problem. But I have had married kings not have children before and actually lost the campaign because of it.

Nah, he's married, but I haven't gotten spies yet... maybe he's gay or something. Anyway, thanks for the welcome. I hope to have time to play the game again... sometime!

Well, last night our 62-year old king gave birth to a bouncing baby boy. Since it's unlikely the child will ascend to the throne directly, I'm doing my best to knock off his useless oldest uncle so the next uncle (who's got amazing stats) will be the steward. So I marched the uncle and a governor who turns out to be venal (total units: 60) into a French province... and the French retreat! Will this guy never die???

I send my useless heirs off to a remote Rebel province with no support.

Sometimes the results are funny. This afternoon I sent the prince regent off to Norway to die. He was RK-late version with armour and weapon upgrades.

20 RKs killed almost 200 vikings/FS in personal combat. The prince regent survived, so next turn I sent him back to Norway (alone) and autocalc. the result.
Got rid of the schmuck eventually. Plus its great to see how good late RKs really are...:)

I didn't know Total War had cheats. Thanks for the info. ~

use the .unfreeze. cheat to get a newborn baby boy on the next turn. Blast.
My England campaign is toast then.
Good king Richard I was a bit late producing an heir & died before his son could mature.
I popped in hoping that I could find the right cheat to pop out a mature heir from my autosave...

It might not be toast. I've found that the heir dying of old age is pretty random once you've installed the patch - if you replay the turn he may not die this time, but will sooner or later. You just need to hope you can keep him alive for 16 years.

I have, on one occasion not lost the campaign when my king died with no heirs. I think I was Poland, maybe Hungary, definately one of the two. As soon as my king died, my faction went into civil war and one of the Princes who was not an heir became the king of my faction. :inquisitive:

I loaded my game just to be sure, and the same thing happened again. I'm not sure if it was supposed to happen or not....

I've noticed that the .unfreeze. cheat only works so many times, and at a certain period of the rulers age... :rifle:

I also had this problem untill i realised that you can only have 6 heirs at one time. So if your king has 5 children your next king can only have 1 unless some of his brothers die before he does for some reason.

I thought of running a "just for fun" campaign with the above cheat. Do you have to pay maintenance charges for hiers royal guards ?
