Can you get him as general? What about Caesar? Attila? Atius?

If you mean a specific "heroes" like in MTW, then no.

You may actually get a guy name Hannibal or Gaius Julius once in a while by luck but they're not specific heroes who come in a specific period of time with notably high skills like Joan of Arc/Henry the Lion were in MTW.

Yet another huuuge mistake by CA, like so many other things that could have made this game epic.

I can just imagine my delight if I killed Caesar. Changing history sounds quite fun..

In my first campaign as Carthage i got a general by the name of Hannibal who i duly decided to send to first sicily and then the toe of italy and on up the Peninsula to sack Rome.It was fun to do.Next time i think i'll attack via the Alps.

If you have a general named Hannibal, you have to take him all the way, don't you? ~;)

To get Caesar you would need to have a general named Gaius Caesar. I just wonder what kind of triat combination you need to get "the great" after your generals name.

It would certainly have been very nice if the "heroes" from MTW were present in RTW as well.
Since unfortunately that's not a feature, the next best thing is roleplaying, just like other posters above me hinted: if you do get a Caesar, kick the Gauls all the way !
If you get Hannibal, sack Rome ! Attila: sweep the plains of central and eastern Europe, all the way to Gaul...

the only historical of RTW are some factions/units/cities and the faction leaders, heirs and some members at the start of the game

I had 4 victories lining a paved road on the way down to Rome. I called it "The Road to Victory". I cannot take all the credit for this, littlegannon was my co-commander.

It's perfectly possible to get a character named Hannibal Barca, but the odds are rather low. For a Gaius/Caius Julius, your odds are much better as the Julii, since a) all your characters are named Julius, b) Romans have relatively few first names, and c) Gaius is registered twice under two different spellings (which should not reasonably coexist the way they do in RTW, and which are both pronounced with a G sound). You can't get a Gaius Caesar, because Caesar isn't a valid name in RTW.

RTR has not changed the frequency of appearance of historical characters (nor could we if we wanted to, beyond the starting characters). However, in 6.0 we do plan to reform the Roman naming system—it's pretty stupid at the moment, with praenomina (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List of Roman praenomina), nomina (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List of Roman nomina), cognomina (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List of Roman cognomina), and some nonexistent names stuck in for both first and last names. In RTR 6.0, we'll have a strict praenomen-nomen naming system, although of course the nomen will be replaced by titles as in vanilla (we can't change that, unfortunately, unless we want to remove all titles, which we don't).
