The devil is always there. He actually has his own tour bus, and is always to be seen in every Tour, mostly in the mountain stages.

And NO, Armstrong is NOT the greatest cyclist ever. He is an Indurain-clone who is worse in the time trial, but thinks a bit better, and has better technology upon which he puts more reliance. When he wins his seventh Tour, that will be becuase he has had no real rival (like Merckx had Ocaña, Anquetil had Poulidor and Hinault had Zoetemelk and Fignon), not because he was stronger than the rest.

Armstrong only rides the Tour. After his battle with cancer (easily the most interesting thing about him, that is to say, his comeback), he has a limited physical ability; he can only ride the Tour and be good. Merckx rode everything. In '73 he skipped the Tour in favor of the Vuelta!

When Merckx stopped riding the Tour, he had collected 96 (!!!) yellow jerseys. That, compared to Armstrong's 65 or so when he finishes this Tour, only marginally better than Indurain's 59.

In '69, in fact, when Merckx won his first Tour, he won everything. Everything! White jersey, green jersey, polka-dot jersey, yellow jersey, even the team ranking! And he did it not by relying on his team, or by winning time trials; no, he simply wanted everything. Take a look at that Tour, and at his actions in the stage to La Plagne, and then tell me again that Armstrong is better. Ha! The thought alone!
