Hi everyone, I have come out of the shadows and decided to post to feed my total war addiction!
I get bored organising balanced armies because I fight similar battles over and over again in the campaign, so I have ended up making unusual mixes of troops and putting them under the command of a raving loon :dizzy2: This gives the AI more of a chance and forces you to use different tactics to what you normally would :charge:
My favorite at the moment is an army of 50% horse archers, 25% ballistas and 25% velites. They are off on an expidition to 'explore' russia.
Does anyone else have any favorite unusual armies?

when I palyed a Germania campaign I send a family member with one Gothic cav through Scythia south. They gathered all mounted mercs they could get: some Samatian Lancers, one Scythian archer, one barb cav.
With these I met the Brutii. A very big battle. Please look at my post in Germania. :charge:

Craziest army i ever had was one made up of entire generels. it was brutii and there were plenty to go round. It was great because the A.I being as dumb as it is every time you auotmated a battle you would always win !
Aaaahhhhhhhh good times.................... ~ ~:handball: ~D

Those giant elephants are useless against a small unit. I sent them to charge a group of ten legionaries and they just kept stomping around...
Stupid elephants.. I sent some cavalry to do the job.

To me, it is the pathetic AI that insist on attacking my army of 8 phalanges, 8 archers and 4 heavy onagers on a bridge, time after time with massive losses on their side and almost none on mine.
When will they ever learn?

Why such elite troops for these odd armies.
Go for about a 25 percent mix of lowlies like town watch or something in your army.

well they will
Well, when playing as Macadonia for the first time, I sent North one of my best Diplomats ever in the game, and turned one of the Dacyin Royal Family members, with him, came two units of former Dacians to fight with him, some random barbarrian stuff.
So they traveled with the Diplomat, bribbing towns, recruiting barbarrians, & other Dacian family members/armies.
I had an entire army of Dacians in the end, more than one army, and that guy took over one of the Dacian towns up there, & in the later years of the Realm of mine, he built it to a nice fortress city, with over 30,000 in population. By that time, Macadonia extended all the way North, & was heading East & West against the Romans, winning every battle within 2-5 minutes!
The strange thing is... before that in the Campaign, I had three other Dacian family members that had joined up, in a different army, along with a huge Dacian mercinary army, they seiged the Dacian Capital, where two other Dacian family members were with their own Dacian army.
I had gone to the bathroom, & when I got back, I remembered that when the enemy sallies, they automatically attack, you get no time to organize!, so they had attacked without my commanding, & I got there in time to watch all three of my General Dacian family members deck it out with the enemy Dacian family members. I managed to kill both of them, and lost all three of mine, along with the army, but the Dacians were hurt terribly. -- Point is, FIGHT THE ENEMY, WITH THE ENEMY!!! It saves on your men so well! ~D Had a little Civil War on there lol!
In this Campaign, within eight hours, I had conquered & expanded more than any other Campaign, which I was astonished.

In a non-serious campaign I had as Germania, I used quite a few peasant armies. With temples that give +3 experience, plus the weaponsmith, those barbarian peasants go into combat with 5 attack and 8 defence and cost hardly anything (ok so I reduced upkeep on all lower units a bit and training time). I had a few Night Raiders to command the peasant armies and sent them off against the Gauls. I won a great victory against a moderate sized Gaul force - killing a family member in the process. The victorious peasants then tried taking a Gaul city. Sadly despite killing the Gaul king and a many more Gauls, some stubborn Chosen swordsmen prevented my peasants from entering the city whilst masses of Forester warbands destroyed their resolve with an unrelenting storm of arrows. And so ended the march of the Germanic Peasant army, with 2,000 kills to their name, but ultimately a pauper's funeral for the lot of them.
I've had a few more Peasant armies, but I mainly auto-resolved the outcomes, which only meant giving the enemy lots of fodder to gain highly experienced troops. I had an all-beserker army in reserve too but never got round to using the psychotic-lunatics before ending the campaign.

Did you ever fight with an army of 8 Scythian Horse Archers and nothing else. That means almost 900 horse archers waiting on a hill for the signal to attack. You feel like Sitting Bull waiting for General Custer to come.

100% Forester Warband (or Chosen Archers, depending on faction)
Sometimes I mix it up a bit and add a general

I had a pontic army that consisted of two bronze shields protecting two archer units. Then I had four chariot archer units running around like a mobile archer line and two cappadocian cavalry units stalking weakened units. The funniest part was when the enemy routed into this grove of trees. Half of my chariot archers drove along side the grove while the other two tailed behind the routers. The crossfire sounded like machine guns impacing the trees. Total slaughter like something out of Vietnam.

ooooh, nice. bring on the heavy cav! I used completely-mercenary armies. Once I just took one family member on a tour of every faction (mind, this was still early-mid game) and I just randomly collected as many mercs as I could to field a 20-unit army, detached that army from my factioner and sent them conquering in random directions, all the while raising new armies. So it was that while my Brutii controlled Greece and the west coast of Asia minor, I had full-stack armies careening around in Seleucia, Phraaspa, Campus Sarmatae, Memphis, and Dimmidi. Not to mention one in spain and one in Gaul. It was a -very- scattered empire I had, because of my strategy, but, well, I guess I was forced to link it all up :-) Amazing what you can do with whatever you scrape together.
