View Full Version : monks and formations
are monks and no dachi's better in a close or loose formation.
i know yari have to be kept in close especially for morale purposes'but should monks and dachi's too'or should they be allowed loose formations to allow freedom of movement???
also what do people think of wedge formation?
i never have used it except maybe for a couple of units just as they hit the enemy'but then change back to close formation so they don't get a defensive penalty.
is wedge a waste of time?
i don't see the point in a formation'that allows an attacking bonus and a defensive penalty all to the same unit at the same time.
whats to be gained?

I tend to keep my WM and ND in close formation for attacking: reserving open formation for those occasions when my opponent brings 6 muskets to a hilly fight on a bright sunny day http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif But who's to say they don't work better that way? Sounds like a trip to Custom Battles is in order Hach http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
Wedge works well for threatening an opponents flank, without fully commiting. Meaning it's easier to disengage a wedged unit from the fray. Wedge will also bust up a musket line better(you'll divide the defenders unit in two).
For general use, however, wedge isn't effective.

i can save tye trip to the CB if you put a WM against WM the one in loose formation we be kill off like at a 3 to 1 ratio at best you might get a 2 to 1

about wedge formation,
do not use it to go in and ingage head on but , as ship said, use it for the flanks. i also like to keep some reserve ND and Wm in wedge so if i'm starting to fall apart on my assault i can add a little kick and hopefully turn the odds in my favor. i also use wedge for my shock when charging downhill. loose formation depends on the situation. i personally do not like it because if you are going to charge enemy range they are going to at least keep one YS behind it and hit you with your charging unit in loose and will suffer heavy cassualties. i only use wedge when i'm defending waiting for the attacker to finish his volleys on my units.

I only use the loose formation when under missle fire and am closing in on the attack.I then change to a close formation just before I reach the enemy.I have used the wedge formation a few times but it didn't seem to break the enemy line any better than the close formation.I will have to try the wedge on a flank attack,as wigwam suggests, maybe it will be more effective.

i also will try wedge in flank attack too.
when is the right moment to change from wedge to close to negate the defensive penalty?
i mean when does the benefit of the wedge no longer apply?

If you change formaytion from for example wedge to close that they stop fighting?

Is there a morale penalty for being caught in a fight whilst changing formation?

The best time I used Wedge was when the battle was fairly well spread out, and was being held in one line. I set WM into wedge, and rather than attacking the enemy, I had them run to a location behind the enemy lines. They smashed through VERY quickly, so I immediately switched them to Close, and charged the battle line from behind. The enemy broke almost immediately, and routed. I've managed to do this fairly consistenly. It is very helpful when trying to rout a larger army. I think that Wedge is best for breaking through the lines, rather than a sustained attack. They die too quickly when kept in Wedge.
There are combat minuses for disorganized troops, so I assume that if you change formation mid-combat, you will suffer a drop until the new formation is attained.

I never use wedge, because it causes much casualty on my part of the troops. Since the first guy is all alone at the front, he is more likely to get killed against a closed formation. Plus a wedge can be easily flanked, much more than the close formation.

My experience seems to be that the wedge works best for the cavalry units. If you watch a ground-troop unit in wedge formation, you'll notice that they spend an awful lot of time reforming after each match, something which uses precious seconds. Cav units, being faster, don't seem to suffer as much a delay, but for ground troops it can mean the difference of a dozen kills between routing a unit, reforming and then giving chase. So close formation is adeuqate and does just as good a job. The same goes in moving to flank.
That said, I often use extra No-Dachi units in wedge formation, mostly just for the flavor-of-the-game thing, in situations like bridge battles or steep downhill attacks, and so far it seems to work okay.
