As the Greeks I'd taken Rome after the SPQR had been daft enough to leave the city and make a fight of it, but instead of the "Facton Destroyed" announcement, a purple patch appeared on the map in Pannonia, 3 doors away - a province which, despite all East Europe seeming much of a muchness, I was under the impression that I owned.
A punitive expedition was dispatched to Aquincum and sure enough there was the shrine to Aphrodite I'd built, standing out like a sore thumb among the mud huts, guarded by a motley crew of town watch and equites who'd made the trip from Rome. As exchanges go, Aquincum for Rome isn't a bad one but where's the logic in this?
I suppose it's possible that there'd been a rebellion and the insurgents had done a deal with the SPQR but no one had thought to inform me.

SPQR bribed your city.
SPQR bribed your city.
Possibly, but wouldn't I have been informed, and wouldn't the defending units have been of Greek origin and not Roman?
Seems odd to bribe an army of 10 units, mainly armoured hoplites, and replace it with 1 equites, 1 town watch and a handful of archers - which approximates to the remnants of the force last seen disappearing into the distance outside Rome.
Or is there a difference between bribing a city and bribing an army?

well if you were Greek, then they wouldn't have been able to transfer your hoplites (since the SPQR cannot train Hoplites) and they would have disbanded instead of turning Senatorial. the Town watch and the Equites are merely what the ex-Senate was able to rebuild among their Roman-shaped units from your Greek-shaped buildings before your discovering their army. or, of course, this is the battered (and possibly retrained) remnants of the ejected force from their former capital as you said. maybe both.

weird???
But in this case they should also have a family member around somewhere...

Not necessarily. SPQR don`t need to have any family members to exist.
I tried it out once, playing as the Julii i killed all their generals in a battle outside Rome. But what a dissapointment to find out that SPQR was still alive!

Agree, It happened to me once then I saw an SPQR diplomat near my former city. It sux that they do that just when you take Rome. I don't know if it's a coincidence or the AI has some unfair advantage. Either way it happened to me at least twice in 2 different campaigns.

I've never had this happen with the SPQR. The only time they get more territory is when I give them territory (and promptly take it back and exterminate to reduce population squalor). There were a few instances where I got one of my cities bribed by a roman army, but it was usually the Brutii.
The way I played it, the Senate faction was destroyed once you took Rome, despite there being plenty of family members (and an heir) outside of the city. This is because the game looks for controlled cities, not existing family members. Anyone left over when the faction is destroyed goes rebel.
But I've never had the Senate survive the capture of Rome in all my games, so this puzzles me.

Strange (supposedly) bribes happened to me as well in 1.2 - three times during an eggy campaign the Brutii got my cities without fighting for them. Oddly, 2 of them just switched sides with no warning messages. More bizarre was the absence of any Brutii diplomat in the vicinity. Each had fresh new Roman units inside (not big deal - one-two hastati/velites).
The only one I was warned of by a message had no Roman units in after the bribe.

I was playing Germania once, and SPQR and Brutii both kept bribing my cities, even my capital...since Patavium is better anyways I let them spend their money that way.
In the end, the Roman empire final vestiges were in Northwestern Russia.

That's what I thought too, until I saw it happen to one of my cities. It is worth mentioning; though, that the only two times that I saw that was right after I took Rome, which leads me to believe that the AI gets some unfair advantage.
