It's hard to answer this because there's a tendency to judge games on their replayablility when perhaps the relevant criterion is how good they were before you had burnt out on playing them. I'm also going to cheat by combining sequels with originals. However, here's my list:

1. Fallout 2 - something about the freedom, scale and atmosphere in that game just bowls me over.
2. Baldurs Gate 1/2: like Fallout 2, with swords and sorcery but a smidgeon less bite.
3. Panzer General 1/2: the first game combines epic historical operations with very accessible gameplay; the second is smaller scale but has a better balanced campaign.
4. Medieval Total War: provides the best mix of challenge and variety of the three TW games.
5. Vampire: Bloodlines: jaw-dropping graphics/characters and incredible immersion.
6. Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 1/2: better than any Star Wars movie (even Empire Strikes Back).
7. Jagged Alliance 2: perfect turn-based tactical combat with engaging strategic layer and character.
8. System Shock 2: more like a book or a film, I can't get the story of this one out of my head - provides the most vivid experience of all the games on this list.
9. X-Com 1: very good tactical combat, oozes atmosphere and decent strategic layer.
10. Imperialism 2: minimises micromanagement, makes challenging economic game and decent AI.

that list is dead wrong.

Starcraft
Half-life (includes mods)
Age of empires
Cossacks back to war
Shogun total war
Medieval Total War
Victoria
Europa Universalis two
Baldurs Gate 2
Simcity 4
Again this list is chosen on replayability
only baldurs gate is playable only once

5. Operation Flashpoint
6. Caesar 2
7. Hearts of Iron 2
8. Civilisation 2 and 3

1. Command & Conquer - the original and best. I liked Dune II but C&C was just brilliant. I can still remember every mission for both sides in full detail and could probably tell you every crate location too (I played this game a lot). The first time you faced an obelisk of light you knew true fear, even now that charging up sound sends shivers down my spine. The FMVs and digital music were just the icing on the cake. The first game I ever played multi-player on a PC with a null modem and every single battle was like a game of chess. My favorite game ever.
2. Half-Life - scary and awesome, like a film even though there were no characters. The ending sucked but who cares. If you played it, then you'll remember the first time you faced the grunts, the first time a headcrab bit your face in a vent shaft, the first time you got chopped into bits by falling into a fan... I must've spent/wasted hours playing Team Fortress online and I liked Counter-Strike too until the cheaters took over.
3. Deus Ex - one of the finest stories ever in a game, a real adult thriller. The roll-playing elements made it excellent and the way that most missions had at least three possible ways of winning was really fresh. Also 3 different possible endings depending on your political leanings (not including the secret dance level). I really liked the way that you could fail certain objectives too, without the game just stopping for no reason, although the grief you got on returning to base made you desperate not to fail. The characters really come to life in this one and I don't think I've ever played it through without finding something new.
4. The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind - if anyone has completed every mission in this game I want to shake their hand. This game was HUGE and yo could complete it by only doing about 5% of the missions. Fantastic story, excellent character development and I loved the way that you would feel like you were there and it was real even though it had a big fantasy setting. Completely non-linear too, the best bits (if you had a good enough graphics card) were when you left the track and found yourself looking over a gorgeous valley in spring (yes it had seasons) or a seething caldera.
5. Shogun: Total War - I wouldn't be posting here if it wasn't for this game. Changed the world of strategy games forever and spawned Medieval and Rome. A faltless epic.
6. Caesar II - would it be a little cheeky to suggest this game pre-empted Shogun's concept by quite a few years? I loved the fantastic mix between Sim City style city building and real-time battles.
7. Mafia - guest director Martin Scorsese? The best story in any game ever, this is a film in so many ways - the characters developed brilliantly throughout the story and even the city itself advanced and grew as the game went on. Perhaps the gameplay wasn't the best ever but the story made me just want to keep playing on. As for the ending... perfection.
8. Civilisation II - need I say more?
9. Age of Empires - once the Rise of Rome expansion was realeased this game just exploded into the greatest build 'em up and smash 'em down strategy game ever. The historical aspect of the game made R:TW look like an Encyclopedia but no one cared. Still hugely popular on the zone today.
10. Championship Manager 98 - this game stole several months of my life that I want back. I don't know why its good and I can't explain why I kept playing it, but it must be something special to keep my attention as long as this game did.

These aren't what I think are the top 10 games; they're the ten games I've enjoyed the most:

1) Shogun Total War, WE/MI - My favorite computer game of all time
2) Soul Calibur (the original for SEGA Dreamcast; Voldo freakmaster!)
3) Morrowind: The Elder Scrolls
4) System Shock II
5) Medieval Total War/Viking Invasion
6) Master of Orion II

8) Alpha Centauri + expansion (especially my DUNE mod for it!)
9) Planescape Torment

Runners Up:
- Half Life
- Halo (for X-Box)
- Homeworld
- Metal Gear Solid II (for PS2)
- SFC II Orion Pirates

I'm afraid it will just be an endless list of games I enjoyed. There's one title though that stands above all, because of the great game itself and the fine people surrounding it.

-1 STW & STW WE/MI.

-2 Too many contenders.

Wohoo, I love this re-emerging thread!

Now, let’s see…

In no particular order, here it comes:

1. Fallout 2
2. Master of Orion 2
3. Shogun TW
4. TIE Fighter
5. Medieval TW
6. Call of Duty
7. Starcraft
8. Silent Hunter 3 (new addition!)
9. Star Wars: The Jedi Academy
10. World of Warcraft (omg I got hooked!)

(in bold, the three all time favorites)

I have played literally thousands of games, as I review games for a PC magazine, and I get something around… Well, 20-30 games per month, sometimes even more, a good share of them I return back without having time to install them at all. I have currently some dozen games I installed, played for an hour or two and put on hold.

Last good thing I played was a remarkable RTS called Act of War, with stunning graphics and good game engine, reminiscent of the C&C beginnings. I played it and though I gave it high ratings, I cannot come around to play it any more… Just don’t have three or four hours to waste any more.

My list (not necessarily in that order):

1. Baldur's Gate 1+2
2. KOTOR 1+2
3. STW
4. MTW
5. HOMM 3
6. Dungeonmaster
7. Neverwinter Nights
8. Tie Fighter
9. Star Wars: Rebellion
10. Fantasy General

The last two might not be generally considred to be "top" games but for some reason I spent endless hours playing them (and unfortunately I cannot get FG to run under XP ~:handball: )

that list is dead wrong.

Indeed, Star Wars Rebellion was a great game for me as well; more because of the spirit of the game, than the quality of the game itself. I cannot believe no one was able to create a civilization type of game in Star Wars universe. :help:

I actually gave it a try during the weekend - OMG, the tactical battle looked hideous ~

Still, had the developers put more effort in the tactical battle and added some more resources for the strategy part, this would have been an all-time-classic.

Wow! More people who played Star Wars: Supremacy (as it was called in the UK). I thought I was all but alone in liking it. I preferred playing as the Empire too; I did finish a few Rebel campaigns but never found them to be as much fun.

I couldn't do a top 10 list of my favourite games; there are too many of them, and all positions except number 1 are tied. Zelda: Ocarina of Time is my favourite game. It was simply stunning in every possible way. A revelation. A thing of beauty. A masterpiece.

Other games right up at the top of the scale include STW, TIE fighter (the CD edition which had speech and both add-ons included), X-wing (again the CD edition with both add-ons included), X-wing alliance, thief 1 and 2, system shock 2, KOTOR 1, the Monkey Island trilogy, Sam and Max hit the road, day of the tentacle, Indiana Jones and the fate of Atlantis, Pharaoh, Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2, Planescape Torment (even though I never did get to finish it because the game always dropped to sub 1FPS when I reached undersigil), Alpha Centauri, Kingdom Hearts, no one lives forever 1 and 2 ... mostly PC or PC+console titles. I have played and loved many games console games, but somehow for the most part they have not quite burned their way into my memory quite so well.

I only play one game. MTW VI. Nothing eslse is worth my time ~D

Yes Ive tried many of the games on those lists but I still only play MTW VI. The rest sit in a box.

And I might add it had the finest gaming community Ive ever seen. My hats are off to all of you who made it such a hilight of my gaming experiences. I will never forget the heyday of VI and of the clans and warriors who made up this world. It is a very sad thing for me to wittness such a stillf fine and outstanding game dying a slow and agonizing death. Im sure many of you older players felt the same about the demise of STW. But at least there was much more in common between STW and MTW than there is between MTW and RTW.

To all those I have met on the field of battle ~

PC games:

1. STW: number one overall and still unbeaten.

2. Operation Flashpoint: I like the open environment, moddability and easy to use mission editor (which keep the game alive).

3. MTW: good game despite of a few things that I didn't like.

4. Romance of the Three Kindoms (3): my first PC game and I like that time period (from the novel).

5. Patrician 2 and 3: very addictive game. More like a building/trading sims than RTS.

Edit: 6. C&C: I like the first one and the expack. Fun game play. Good music and even the installation program. Missed this one on the original list.

7. Kohan-Immortal Sovereigns: the only RTS survived TW invasion. I like the effects and customizable squad (especially, after modding a little).

8. XCOM-Apocalypse: not the best in the series, but I like the squad-base tactical in real time.

9. Call of Duty, Halo, Vietcong, Delta Force series: fun action/shooter games, but not much replay value for SP.

10. Half love half hated category:

- SWAT series, GR, Rainbow Six series: Spec Op thrill. Unfortunately, I'm not very good at Spec Op type of missions (too much restriction). I have most of them but haven't finished any yet.

- Civ 1-3: so much fun but annoying at time.

Console games:

Dynasty Warriors 3 and 4: the only console games that I own and play.

Well, it doesn't really qualify for a flight sim, but I thoroughly enjoyed Ace Combat on my PS2. Loved the slow, low-altitude, funny-looking yet butt-kicking tank killers ... um, I'm terrible with remembering plane names ... um, ... help me out here experts ... .

So I'm getting a sense that Fallout 2 and Zelda, Ocarina are two really superb games. I've not played or even seen anything about either of them. What kind of PC would be needed to play them (mine is very old), and are they still obtainable? I'm not going to be able to update my PC anytime soon, and I'm starved for new gaming experiences. Fortunately, the AI never has more than one. I was fun to take a base defending by the light tower, especially one with lot of SAMs and gun turets. I usually send a couple of Mammoths to draw fire form the tower, then slip a few APCs full of engineers and grenadiers past the defense to take out the power plans.

I guess, it is much more difficult in MP.

1) Shogun: Total War - (vanilla; never played Mongol Invasion). I've played it death; it's the most fun game ever! (CA are you listening? ~;) )

Medieval: Total War - Meh. Didn't live up to STW's prestige at all (I've never been as extremely disappointed). :embarassed:

Rome: Total War - Has a lot of potential. But it is still very fun to play especially with the spanking new graphics. (They really need to make the battles longer and open the battlemap just a bit by loosening the red-line).

The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay - Had a blast with this game. Starbreeze needs to make a new one. NOW!! ~:)

Fallout 2 (also 1) I have never played for various reasons, but it is a very old PC game. It is still available in its various budget incarnations, including one edition where it is packaged with number 1, but a little hard to find. In theory it should work on any modern PC, but I remember hearing about a few problems people had encountered.

Zelda: TOOT is a console game. Originally released on the N64, but later ported to the GameCube. The GC edition was a special pre-order bonus feature with the latest in the series, WindWaker, but I think they later released the port for normal sale. The original N64 version is my favourite - I just cannot adjust to having tiny loading times in the game; I spent hundreds of hours playing the original version, so all the menu accessing etc in the game is now at an instinctive level for me, and adding a half second delay to that messes my timing up. However the port does feature slightly better graphics and has a second, special quest called 'the master quest'. Basically that is a harder version of the game with a few changes here and there.

Yep, that's the one ~:). There was a program on the History Channel about them awhile back, but I couldn't remember what they were called. In the game you had to approach them differently, but they sure were effective.

Lock On: Modern Air Combat is worth the price just for the A-10. The graphics are insane and the flying is sweet. Need a bear of a system to run that pig though. It will bring my AMD64-3000/9800Pro to its knees when things are maxed. But if you tune it down and don't have too many planes in the air, it flies well and still looks incredible.

Owwwww my favorite console games. So many! Generaly speaking console games kick the behind of the pc when it comes to fun. Nothing beats mario smash melee if you can get more than 2 people, you can be so annoying ~D I also adore Devil may cry, have yet to play the third tho. Viewtifull Joe, who can resist something as genius as that, it just don't get old. And all these crazy horror titles like Silent Hill and Eternal darkness. Too many quality titles to just pick ten!

Oh well, if we're allowed to throw console games into the mix that changes everything. A good console game is usually more 'fun' than a good PC game, but a good PC game is a more filling experience. The PC is the thinking man's console methinks.
I've already given my top 10 PC, so for top 10 console (including Amiga, Spectrum and such) I'd say:

Wild Cup Soccer - if only real football had guns, genetically enchanced rhinos and swords. The beautiful game at its ugliest.
Mario Tennis - my joint favorite 4 player party smash. Mixed doubles anyone?
Goldeneye - my joint favorite 4 player party smash. The game that really put FPS into the lounge console market, its just too good as long as no-one picks 'slappers only'.
Perfect Dark - a more adult version of Goldeneye. Not quite as good as its 'prequel' but still excellent for the adundance of new game modes and options.
Super Mario World - huge. Every time I think I've finished this one I find more things still to do. Fun and frustrating in perfect balance.
Tower Assault - legendary storm in and shoot everyone classic.
Lemmings - I finished this game... does that make me a bad person?
Elite - need I say more?
Golden Axe I/II - awesome hack, slash and spell platformer. Great fun two player.
Seventeen Swords - ninjas, guns and general havoc. You couldn't save this game and when I completed it, it took about 10/15 hours of play. Imagine the anger if someone turned off the console while you'd paused it to go out, but it was worth it just to start again.

I can't make a top ten in order of how much I like them, but here are my favourite games, as I think of them:

Fallout (PC)
Fallout 2 (PC)
Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn (PC)
Darksun: Shattered Lands (PC)
The Genie's Curse (PC)
Final Fantasy III (6 in japan/psx rerelease) (SNES, PSX)
Final Fantasy 7 (PSX, PC)
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (SNES)
Civilization 2 (PC)
Medieval: Total War (PC)
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES)

Honourable mentions: Donkey Kong Country II (SNES), Super Mario World (SNES), Torment (PC), Dynasty Warriors 3 (Ps2)

As so can probably guess, I'm a huge fan of RPG games, as well as turn based strategy and 2d platformers.

Fallout 2 is not "very" old, it was released in 1998. It will run on windows xp just fine, and if it doesn't, there are fan-made patches to ensure that it does.

Minimum specs for Fallout 2 is a 90 mhz processor with 16 megs of RAM, btw.

The numerical order here is largely irrelevant
1. MTW/VI
2. Civil War Generals II -- especially the MP, and this one was great for modding. AI was weak, but I'm partial to good Civil War games.
3. Red Baron 3D -- Excellent campaign.
4. Spaceward Ho -- Laugh, but it is a fun little game, and can be extremely challenging if you set it up right.
5. SM's Gettysburg
6. SM's Antietam
7. Lords of the Realm II
8. STW/MI
9. Tie Fighter
10. Civil War Bull Run

IL-2 series doesn't make my list simply because of the problems with uber laser cannon gunners, lack of an interesting campaign, and problems with historical balance. I gave up after FB...too many immersion killing moments in what could be the most immersive sim ever. If they could just graft on RB3D's campaign...

19. Trek (main frame ascii graphic)
20. Pacman (arcade)

those are in no particular order and i included an extra 11 because of my vast experience in gaming :) there are other good ones i didnt include, like Jumpman and some other 8 bit titles and maybe Galactica in the arcade arena and a simple, but addictive arcade space game where you had one little space ship and flew against an AI or another player, the object being to shoot the other guy. it had the option of putting in a sun for gravity effects and doing wrap around screens. oh, and let's not forget Asteroids :)

1. Betrayal at Krondor - best RPG ever IMO

I thought I was the only person in the world who'd ever bought this game! Oh man...I need to dig this out and play again. It was just too hard for me when I first got it, back in the day.

Also, every one of you is completely insane. How could you not put up the great and mighty BATTLETOADS!?

1) Baldur's Gate 2
2) Battletoads (also, Battletoads vs. Double Dragon)
3) Mortal Kombats 2 and 4
4) Shogun: Total War
5) Dungeon Keeper
6) Diablo (the original)
7) Contra (all of them)
8) Doom 2
9) Both Fallouts (I actually shed a tear when Black Isle closed down)
10) Warcraft 2

There are honourable mentions abound, but I'll only list a few: Final Fantasy 7, The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series for the Nintendo consoles (2-4), Street Fighter 2, Die Hard Arcade, Manhunt, Day of Defeat mod for Half-life, WWF No Mercy (admit it) and that crazy X-Men game for the arcade that allowed six player to play simultaneously.

Lords of the Realm II had an interesting campaign system, which in my eyes total war borrowed heavily from, but the battles were a complete mess.

I initially played Lords of the Realm II on my Amiga and loved it. When I finally switched to PC I eventually bought the PC version of the game because I missed playing it.

The graphics on the PC version are really terrible, and all the different "worlds" are very samey, no really big campaigns, just a handful of provinces in each. The method of moving workers from one job to another, by "lassooing" them with the mouse, is really clumsy and irritating (the Amiga version just has sliders).

The play balance was inferior for all sorts of reasons, for example the frequency with which trade wagons and mercenaries appear. In the Amiga version, the trade wagons might only come around once every couple of years, so you'd really be hanging out for one so you could sell all that wool you'd accumulated and get the vital cash. Other times the wagon that finally turned up might lack that one essential item you really needed. This tension is really lacking in the PC version, where another wagon carrying exactly the same stuff comes virtually every turn.

Likewise, in the Amiga version, mercenaries only appeared occasionally, and only in port provinces, making them especially valuable provinces to conquer.

And I agree with you that the combat in the PC version was pretty stuffed. You have little control over your units, and there isn't a whole lot of difference between the performance of one type of unit and another. Peasants are almost as good as any other unit. It's just a chaotic game of raw numbers really.

In the Amiga version, it might cost you 2000 gold to buy enough swords for 100 swordsmen, but those 100 swordsmen really made a difference. They could cut their way through 1000+ peasants if you put them in a "backs to the wall" position. Better trained units also maintained a formation. Also morale came into it, at a certain point your troops' morale or the enemy's might collapse and the survivors flee. The more expensive the unit, the higher its morale. None of this is extant in the PC version.

The combat system in the Amiga version, while much simpler than a game like RTW, was actually quite fun and very well balanced. The same cannot be said for the PC version.

Darn I miss that game. I wish they would do an updated version of it.

Darn I miss that game. I wish they would do an updated version of it.
I believe they realeased a special Siege Pack expansion for II which let you play on some 'historically accurate' castles and added quite a few additional features that aren't present in the original.
It also improved the AI a whole lot, especially for the siege battles. If my memory serves me correct it also added a map editor, more maps, a custom battle mode, more castle designs, more diplomatic options and random events.

The more I think about it, the more I realise that Shogun does take a lot from Lords of the Realm II. Medieval even more so with merc recruitment and the sieges. The major quantum leep is in terms of the real-time battles on 3D terrain.
LOTR2 actually had some features that wouldn't be implemented into the TW cycle until R:TW. The ability to construct siege engines on-sight at a siege was new in Rome but present in LOTR2, as is the ability to raise your opponents terrain to reduce his income. In fact, the campaign map troop movement is pretty much the same, they both allow you to move your armies where you please except up mountains, giving movement bonsuses when you are on the road and if you attack the opponents settlement/castle then a siege begins.

All lovers of the Total War series, pay homage to the games that started it all... LORDS OF THE REALM and LORDS OF THE REALM II

Perfect Dark
I found Goldeneye to be overrated and somehow never really liked it, but PD I loved. Perhaps it was the storyline, or the increased stealth, or the adorable Falcon II with silencer, or maybe just Joanna Dark's (and the game's) sense of humour. I still remember Carrington complaining and telling his prime agent to behave when he caught her skulking about the offices in a crouch. Or his grumbling when you shot out all the wine bottles in his cellar.

It was a classy game; great graphics, plenty of well done speech, nicely done difficulty levels, good level design, tension, humour, bits that set your heart racing, excellent controls, good story, good characterisation, and (trivial, but it impressed this frog) an anatomically correct female lead character who wore (gasp!) actual clothes instead of fetish gear!

Any game which allows you to run about in a posh evening dress stealthily shooting people with a silenced pistol has a certain undeniable flare.

Al Khalifah
04-20-2005, 10:35
My problem with Perfect Dark was that it got a bit silly at times. The Skeddar were cool but those annoying little Maian things, who are called 'Elvis' were a bit much. I found I enjoyed the game less as it went on, as the mission settings become more and more outrageous and the enemies went from interesting to tedious. The Farsight X-20 was an awesome gun but it made the Challenge Missions too easy and it could ruin multiplayer missions on some maps. The Challenge Missions were also really let down by the glitch that let you customise them, so the final challenge could be YOU vs 1 MEAT BOT.

The Datathief multiplayer level was excellent and gave you really cool teamplay, whether it was 2 v 2 or 4 v computer. Co-op mode was cool too, but the slow down was horrible when you played some of the larger missions. The start of the Carrington Villa mission where you have to use the sniper rifle makes the game grind to a hault (and this is with the expansion drive).

Did anyone actually play this game without the expansion drive?

frogbeastegg
04-20-2005, 10:54
I had the expansion pack; I got it for ... rogue leader, I think. I didn't have any problems with the start of the villa mission (one of my favourites), but I did experience slowdown later on in the game, usually when things got busy or explosives appeared.

At first I was a bit annoyed the game took such a different turn, but then I began to enjoy what that turn introduced. Elvis was funny, some of those last missions were really impressive (being rescued from a Skedar ship by a bunch of greys who fought alongside you), others really creepy (that underwater one) or tense (the medical base). I hated the last normal mission though, the Skedar homeworld. I died so many times right at the beginning of that level I thought I would go quite mad. I nearly gave up out of sheer frustration. Then I suddenly hit my stride and tore through the level without a problem. I never did like that level though; I seldom replayed it.

All the same I would have preferred to face humans than Skedar, and I always preferred conventional weaponry over the freaky alien versions. Give me my silenced Falcon II any day.

I never played MP, and I found most of the challenge missions a bit dull, so I never finished them. Equally the weapons training missions were dull and so went mostly ignored.

I didn't like the farsight; it was an interesting idea, but the scope moved too slowly for my tastes, and it felt like cheating. I prefered to sneak about with my silenced pistol.

No one lives forever 1 and 2 are the only FPS games I've enjoyed as much as PD. I've never been a FPS fan; even like the fabled Halflife did not find any favour with me, though I did play it a few years after its release when it was bound to be less impressive.

Same here. I have to say I enjoyed some WWII shooters and wonder why there isnt any WWI decent games yet....

A WWI shooter would be a bit short on potential. The player character mantles a trench and charges into machine gun fire. If the player is lucky he won't get shot too badly, snagged in barbed wire, blown up by a land mine, struck by shrapnel or by artillery (friendly or enemy). The player then has to shoot entrenched enemy soldiers from very close range, because stopping in no-mans land will mean certain death. Repeat ad-infinitum. If the player makes it through the war/game without having to reload once, hes one of the luckiest men alive.

Plus, games developers aren't going to put ourselves in a situation where we get bombed with complaints from relatives and censors about the content of our games. A developer friend of mine said his company recieved numerous complaints about a war based FPS they produced because the relatives and veterans claimed it was too non-violent! They said this produced a glorified version of the truth and the war itself and that the way violence was shown in the game would warp peoples perception of its consequences. At the same time, the censors are still willing to slam the door on any game they percieve as being excessively violent. WWI was the most violent and vicious war in history and isn't really the sort of thing that makes a good video game. Video games are meant to be fun, there is little that could make a fun game concept in WWI without being grossly historically innacurate unless it was a flight combat game.

SwordsMaster
04-20-2005, 15:38
Well, yeah, but most of the people who fought on WWI and could complain about it are all dead, so I dont think that is the problem. IMO WWII has eclipsed WWI, specially seeing as the US participation in WWI was much less than in WWII and many developer companies are american.

But there isnt even a Close Combat style game setup in the WWI era, and besides the trench warfare thing wasnt present on all fronts at all times...

Top ten games eh?
Well I don't know about numbering them one to ten, or even ten, but some games I have found supreme have to be:

-MTW VI (of course): no explanation needed here!

-Call of Duty: Great cinematics and audio, truly astonishing experience on some levels that can be truly frightening.

-Resident Evil 2: The gretaest survival story ever; fantastic graphics (for it's time), excellent replayability (4 different ways of playing it!), truly marvellous plot and the only game I actually had to keep the lights on for.

-Operation Flashpoint: Excellent game due to it's environment and modability. Sure the squad control could be a bit awkward but once you grasped it it was manageable. Plus one of the first FPS games that had the 'one hit and your basically dead' attitude to it.

-Streets of Rage 2: I got this the day it came out, and still play it on my emulator now. Excellent mindless fun, great SFX and music, and still one of the best 2P games around.

-Civilisation: The game that got me into strategy games, Classic case of gameplay over graphics!

-Max Payne: OK, you could only play it once, but it was great entertainment for that one time.

-Total Annihalation: The original and best RTS. Never beaten in my mind.

Might add more if I think of any.

Dunno about a top ten, I've played so many games I tend to forget what I've played, but here are some that come to mind which I got heaps of enjoyment from (in no particular order):

1. Hack - public domain game (Amiga) - the graphic version of the game (not the text version). This is the game that caused me to go out and buy a computer. I played it for months on end, obsessively, compulsively, until finally I realized the damn thing had a bug that caused it to crash at the deepest dungeon levels. Never did get to beat it, but for depth, immersion and challenge it was up there with the best. And it was totally free! Later versions of the game were ruined by features like the Keystone Kops which made it too easy.

2. Larn. Another Amiga PD game, much like Hack but with sexier graphics. Not quite as much fun as Hack but pretty good all the same. I beat this one multiple times, eventually giving up at difficulty level 6.

3. And while we're on PD games, there was Wizzy's Quest (Amiga), a sort of Lemmings type game (before Lemmings was thought of) only better. The levels were exquisitely well designed and you could only save every five levels, which made the game incredibly compulsive. And all written in BASIC by some guy in his bedroom!

4. Speedball II (Amiga). Great fun brutal sports game for one or two players.

5. Cannon Fodder I and II (Amiga). Not usually a fan of arcade games but this one was a beaut, you really had to get your tactics and strategy right *as well* as your trigger finger and timing. Played CF II right to the end, CF I unfortunately had a bug which prevented me from playing beyond about the 12th level.

6. Dungeon Master (Amiga). Not quite the first dungeon game (the execrable Bard's Tale series probably took that honour) but took the genre to new levels of excellence with high res graphics, hard but logical puzzles, locational sound effects and great atmospherics and attention to detail. Still fun to fire up and play even though it's not true 360 degree 3D.

7. Lords of the Realm II (Amiga). Much better than the PC version, which itself is something of a legend. But for a couple of very minor features (the really silly autocalc results, and the fact that autocalc is used between two human factions instead of allowing one the initiative) I might still be playing it in preference to the TW series.

8. Silent Service II (Amiga). The graphics were pretty basic but there was heaps of gameplay in this one, and quite a bit of historical flavour as well. I'd LOVE to see an updated version of this game, where is it?

9. STW (PC). The battle engine is smoother and faster than MTW and the atmospherics are better. Really miss my warrior monks! A little more detail in the campaign system and some tougher difficulty levels and you'd almost never grow tired of playing it.

10. Gee I'm not sure what to put in this slot. Maybe I'll go for Accolade's Elvira II (Amiga) , just for the haunted house section. The gruesome graphics are so cool and funny.

Come to the end but I'm sure there must be at least half a dozen brilliant titles I've totally forgotten ~:)

I'm going to mix console games (well, two of them) with PC games.

1) MTW: VI
It changed my perception of videogames, I think. Certainly the strategy genre. It also got me here! Spent hours and hours on that game. I can still take it out and play it some more. Also, there are several quality mods out there for it. VI is a necessary component of this, as it made the game much better. Without VI, MTW might not make the top berth. Close though.

2) Close Combat II
A brilliant RTS game without the stupid resource gathering like star craft and co. The soldiers were real people in that game, an effect I really like. They aren't identical, mindless idiots for you to control godlike-ly. Nope. If you lost a whole bunch of guys in a battle, you were actually moved by it. I was, anyway. Note: I haven't played any other Close Combat games beyond demos. I may get III someday, though. I hear it is good (maybe even better than II).

3) Sid Meier's Gettysburg!
Another brilliant RTS game, with some parallels to CC2. I loved the whole Civil War setting, videos of reanactments, the little things like being able to play bugle calls. And this is not to mention the wonderful game - very challenging (the AI can be wicked, and I was very poor). Sadly, I lost the original CD, and the Sid Meier's Civil War Collection (Gettysburg + Anteitem) doesn't work on my computer.

4) Tie Fighter/X-wing
The two similar games are from one of my favorite game companies, Lucasarsts, owned by one of my favorite movie franchise, Star Wars. Tie fighter was my first computer game love, and indeed took many months of my 9-year-old life from me. I may get it again some day - on CD instead of floppy disks! I have X-wing, which wasn't as good as Tie, I think, but is still excellent. Note: I despise the X-wing Vs. Tie Fighter game. The stupid turning rules where more speed = slower turning!?! Bleh.

5) Star Fox 64
The greatest console game ever. Corny dialogue, fun, mindless action, wonderful. It needs a sequal that does it justice.

6) Rogue Squadron III
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm such a hypocrit for not playing the first two. But III is still very good, #2 for my Gamecube. Beautiful graphics, the mindless-ness of Star Fox + Star Wars of Tie fighter. III gives you co-op missions as well as single player, and my brother and I beat all but the very last mission together (it's his fault, you know ~;) )

7) Star Craft
I may be branded for heresy, but I have to credit where it is due (for me at least). Star Craft was fun, though repetitive and mindless. The campaign was pretty neat, at least the story. The cutscenes between certain levels were the greatest. And the dialogue, particularly the Terrans, was awesome. Just keep clicking the Tank Driver to here him say funny stuff.

8) Rome: Total War
It is with a heavy heart that I put this game at #8. I wish it could have been #1. But it ain't. I am hoping for mods to bring this higher, like Europa Barbarorum, anything made by Duke John, and a few others. RTW: potential wasted.

9) America's Army
Surprisingly enjoyable tactical shooter, though I've lost interest. Amazingly it plays well and looks gorgeous on my mediocre laptop. Hopefully there will be sequals with new weapons, like the XM-8 and XM-29 (two experimental weapons for the US Army that look really cool).

10) Age of Empires II: Age of Kings
One of my favorite games many moons ago, before I graduated to MTW. Fun, though eventually repetitive. The campaigns were good, and challenging. Random maps were less fun. Never got the expansion. Favorite faction: Teutons (those Germans with the Teutonic Knights).

Others
These I don't have the full version of but might in the future, or I didn't include for other reasons.

Halo/Halo2 - I lack an Xbox, and it isn't worth it to play Halo I on my laptop with the graphics as low as they can possibly be. Also, it will be interesting convincing that "Mature" means "makes players more mature."

Marathon - I've managed to track down Windows versions for this game, that I only heard about through Halo. Looks kinda cool, and hey, no slowdowns. Since it was made in like 1994. ~;)

Call of Duty
Looks very fun, need better computer. Have played demo.

Lords of the Realm II had an interesting campaign system, which in my eyes total war borrowed heavily from, but the battles were a complete mess.

They certainly weren't as pretty, but the speed was about the same as RTW, LOL! In some ways they were better than RTW. The AI inflicted far more casualties in LOTR2 than RTW is able to inflict. Rock/paper/scissors worked better.

Played way too many games to list 10 in order but some favs that I can think of atm are:

RTW and STW (didn't like MTW)
Syndicate
Total Annihilation
GP2, GPL and GTR for racing games.
Duke3D, Deus Ex, Max Payne, Call of Duty
Pool of Radiance, Azure Bonds and SotSB (C64), Phantasy Star (master system), Wizardry 8, Baldurs Gate
Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries, Heavy Gear 2

ah, you young'uns. you've missed so many ;)

17. Pong (arcade)
18. Donkey Kong (arcade)
19. Trek (main frame ascii graphic)
20. Pacman (arcade)

K.

LOL. I was thinking more along the lines of Asteroids, Space Invaders, and Defender.

I still remember hanging out by the Atari displays when they first came out, trying to find other kids to play 1vs1 in the biplane/tanks game. That was in silicon valley.

I still have my Intellivision. It has been a few years since I last played it, but it had many great titles. It was head and shoulders above the original Atari--none of the Atari games ever hooked me. But the Intellivision had depth (and much better graphics.)

RTW and STW (didn't like MTW)

The thing I could never understand about MTW is why they changed the battle engine from STW. The MTW engine is clearly inferior. Units respond to commands slower, when you pull a group of units across terrain some of them line up in screwy ways, and the FPS rate is clearly inferior. Not to mention the missile units that don't skirmish. The graphics are fuzzier and less pretty on the battlemap as well.

MTW with the STW battle engine would have been a much better game. You can't help but make an unfavourable comparison when coming to MTW from the older game.

BTW, I notice you mentioned Deus Ex as one of your favourites, but I don't think anyone has put Deus Ex 2 into their top ten. It was a much awaited game but doesn't appear to have created much excitement. Was it a disappointing sequel?

Walmart, in the bargain bin. At least, Silent Hunter II for the PC. The new SHIII just came out as well
http://www.silenthunterii.com/

I bought a copy of that for $9.95 a few months ago and it screwed up my computer. I had to reload an old registry list to get the thing working again.

I did eventually find a way to play it without it causing too many problems as I recall, but I didn't find the action very compelling anyhow. Perhaps interest had waned by then because of all the problems I'd had trying to install it.

Anyhow, I deinstalled it a couple of weeks after getting it to work, and wouldn't reinstall now because I've forgotten exactly what problems it causes and I'd have to go through the whole mess again.

Thanks for the suggestion though ~:)

Yeah, I like the STW battle engine better than MTWs. It does look prettier to me too and the AI did appear to put up more of a challenge. But where MTW shines is at the strategic level. There are so many more strategic possibilities playing as, say, England than there are when playing as Shimazu. There's scope for role-playing, especially with Glorious Achievements; and there's no equivalent of the Hojo horde. Not to mention the factions' strategic positions and orders of battle are much more varied. STW is a gem, no doubt, but MTW is a like a crown of jewels by comparison.

Yeah, when I bought LOTR II for my PC I got it in a package that included everything ever released in the series including the Siege Pack.

I'm afraid that none of it remotely challenges the Amiga version of the game.

The biggest disappointment was the extra "worlds" that came with the Siege Pack. I envisaged huge worlds with dozens and dozens of provinces to conquer and Lords to battle against. But I don't think any of them have more than about a dozen provinces, if that. So it doesn't matter whether you are playing tiny Ireland or vast America, you still have the same little handful of provinces to play with!

A lot of the worlds are really cheesy as well. Circular worlds. Square worlds. Other worlds that are patterned on some geometric shape. Apart from looking silly, none of them add anything to new to gameplay, since the number of provinces is always about the same.

@ Simon

I never got that deep into MTW but I agree there are more strategic options. I'd probably enjoy it more now if I went back to it, STW really isn't big enough for me anymore, I pretty much exhausted the possibilities in that game long ago, having played and won with every faction.

But I'll still never understand why they redesigned the battle engine for MTW to come up with something worse.

I had completely forgotten about that one ! One of the few RTS games I enjoyed post-Warcraft 2, I never did understand what was so good about AoE.

I have also forgotten probably the greatest game ever:

Sadly, I lost the original CD, and the Sid Meier's Civil War Collection (Gettysburg + Anteitem) doesn't work on my computer.

One of my favorite games Sid Meier's Gettysburg. It didn't really have much ambition, but boy did it do what it did well. The definitive single battle simulator, the full day scenarios (play the entire 1st day and 2nd day of Gettysburg all in one go!) are the best battle missions I think I've ever played. You really have to think about what you're doing and the consequences of success and failure are big - unlike in the fight the battle mode where you could force a units surrender one scenario and have it fighting you again the next.

Firaxis recently released a windows xp patch to allow you to play the game on an XP box. If this is your problem I suggest you look for this patch, when I tried it just took a quick Google. How good is that for customer support???

It was an okay game, but a bit poor as a sequel to Deus Ex. The story was quite good but the gameplay wasn't quite so original and the RPG element was almost completely removed from the game. Its kind of like The Phantom Menace compared to A New Hope.

Dune II - It started the whole RTS genre. Yes it was difficult to use, one dimensional (tank rush (although just about every RTS fell prey to that one)), but it was revolutionary compared to it's contemporaries, and provided hours of fun.

Deus Ex - Brilliant combination of RPG elements with a first person shooter, many threads to get to one place, well balanced.

Daggerfall - Just epic. Morrowind is small in most ways compared to Daggerfall. Again, hours of fun. Dungeons that were actually dungeons (it would take weeks to get out of some of them).

Quake III - Pure fun FPS, and the point at which graphics became good looking, rather than degrees of ugliness. Still fun to play today, with plenty of mods.

Total Annihilation – If Dune II started RTS games, this hit the peak of them. Picture this, you are trying to assault a enemy held beach with one pass up into the hills behind it. Amphibious tanks crawl out of the water, gunships go over the top to suppress light defences, battleships are hanging slightly back pounding the enemy plasma batteries, and the cruisers move in to try and sweep the beach of enemy units. As the tanks come out of the water the defences automatically pop up from their bunker and start shooting, a stray shell from a battleship or cruiser sails over the beach and onto a solar panel, causing it to close up to protect itself from damage. As the tanks crawl out of the water they are destroyed, creating shelter from fire behind their wreckage. Meanwhile the enemy starts to airlift in reinforcements onto the beach, watch as the VTOL transports flare their engines to come to a stop over the beach, then watch as they struggle to get altitude and speed while moving out of there.

I could go on, but it was just a really well thought out game, which was beautiful, and in terms of 3D RTS games still has the best implementation of terrain I’ve seen.

Mafia – Atmosphere, a bit’s already been said about it, so I won’t go to much further.

Rainbow Six: Raven Shield – This may be the wrong choice, because I haven’t played any of the RS games, but it goes in anyway. One of the few games that ever made me care about the lives of the characters who I was playing. It seemed to get the error distribution right, sometimes the opposition would make a dumb move, but at other times they would do something brilliant. Great fun, and always a challenge.

System Shock 2 – Combine Mafia and Deus Ex and you get this. Brilliant.

Civilization – Set the benchmark for empire building, a mark that has only been bettered by Sid himself. Nobody else has managed to do as well in a decade.

Heavy Gear 2 – Squad based mech game. Pretty weak in single player, it really shined at LANs with multiplayer, where you could customise your squad to an incredible degree, and were forced to work together.

Honourable mentions go to

MTW
Starsiege: Tribes
Heroes of Might and Magic 2
Championship Manger (probably 01/02, took the CM3 series to it’s peak)
Alpha Centauri (would have gone in but for Civ)
TIE Fighter
Fallout
Ghost Recon

i dont think i played mechwarrior ii, but i played iii and iv. iv was quite good. i played iii online, but the hackers were rampant and it was quite disappointing. iv played online was pretty good. if i remember correctly, iv had the cheat buster software, preventing as least the novice hackers from making a mess of things. i also liked the campaign in iv and still play a bit now and then. the modding of mechs was much better in iv also and with the expansion packs, even more so. a 100 ton mech with jets, now that's getting ugly :)

i also just started a new thread in here dealing with old dos mode games. i just installed Empire, one of those games i listed in my top ten, onto my win98 machine. it took a bit to get it installed and running, but actually wasnt too hard. i was quite surprised i could get it working, but it did run and run smootly.

That sounds cool. I'm not usually into RTS games, but I might have to see if I can pick this one up as a budget title.

Total Annihilation won rave reviews by everyone who played it, but other than that, no one even heard about it, kind of like a Warcraft 1 thing.

Mechwarrior II came free with my old Celeron years ago. It kept crashing and I could never get it to work, until I realized that I needed to change my settings to 256 colours! I'd be doomed to illegal operation errors if I tried it now. The game was a blast, though (not pun intended).

Total Annihlation had one unique thing going for it: Unexhaustable resources, as long as you could keep your production up and keep it going, you never ran out.
I remember a few four player games that went on for half a day or so, racking up 10,000 kills a side and still no sight of victory.
Of course, it's even better with the expansion pack, Core Contingency.
Also, I am sure that the fast your CPU, the harder the A.I was..

My list, in order that is.

Tie Fighter Gold: Hehe... I have noticed that others have mentione Tie Fighter but none have mentioned it as Gold. It is absolutely immense, 105 (if I'm not mistaken, but it is more than 100) main missions, some 30 other missions (to get various badges for your locker). Lots and lots of crafts and ships, the only one missing is the Super Star Destroyer.
Since I have never played Tie Fighter without Gold I don't know where it ends (with the Emperor granting that medal I guess?). But I just loved the storyline of Zaarin going rogue and you having to battle him alongside Thrawn for technology. There is even a bit of psychology in the game as Thrawn sees through him and lays an elaborate plan to trap him using cloak technology.
But who can't love the Tie Interceptor? So maneuverable and powerful, yet so fragile, keep away from Escort Shuttles! I more or less destroyed my Mouseman mouse as I flew using the mouse but it was all worth it as with the mouse you had superior maneuverability to the keyboard or joystick.

MTW: Needs little explaination.

System Shock 2: GAH!!!! Scary and immersive, an almost perfectly sculpted storyline.

AvP: GAH!!! Again! A breakthrough in that it was now possible to play an FPS with a purely melee character, and not feel like a hulk. Sounds great, lighting great, fights great (especially as Alien and Marine). Just great!

C&C: The initial game was so lovely, I can still hear the Mechanial Man in my head at times. Toxic resources, big vehicles, cool enemies. Ahhh... In time this was ruined though.

STW: Needs little explaination as well, it has less gameplay but lots more feel than MTW. So I guess it is a personal thing.

Call of Duty: I'm not much of a FPS player really (and I have AvP and SS2 on the list... great), but this one really had me going. If only it had been perfected a bit more, such as adding a German campaign for one, it would have topped my list.

Operation Flashpoint, the whole series: A great game in all. Play a single soldier or become a tank commander, even take control of an attack helicopter. It is so damn great. How I loved the missions in Red Hammer where you drove a tank or flew a helicopter.

the Quest games: Humour... Intrigue... plots... There was everything, something for every soul. Police Quest for the serious person, Space Quest for the half insane comedy addict and Kings Quest for the real quest addict (with its own large dose of humour). They did deteriorate in Police Quest... Sad thing really.

Dark Sun: Shattered Lands: The original party-RPG. Good gameplay with a good storyline (escaping gladiators that forges an alliance of villages against the city), extensive world and plenty of abilities for playstyles (though brute forces does grant you an advantage).

And lots more I have liked, such as Baldurs Gate 2 with expansions.

Close Combat 2 & 3
Asheron's Call (the only MMO I really enjoyed, can't stand MMO's now though)
C&C (made me forever addicted to strategy games)
Mechwarrior 2 (& ghost bears legacy, & mercenaries, spent countless night playing these with buddies, even bought one of the very first 3d acceleration cards just for the special Mechwarrior 2 enhanced version lol.)
Operation Flashpoint (with all the mods it's the definitive realistic combat experiance)
STW
Icewind Dale II (love the atmosphere, simplicity and customization, much more replayable than the BG series IMHO)
Total Annihlation (graphics and detail blew my mind when it first came out)
Richard Burns Rally
Falcon 4.0 (the only flight sim that ever made me feel like I was really flying)
Pirates!
Doom II
Pro Evolution Soccer 3/ Winning Eleven 7 International
Final Fantasy Tactics
Final Fantasy VI
Legend of Zelda original/LTTP /OOT (tie, can't chose just one :D)
Chrono Trigger

Eternal Darkness
Metroid original

I have not heard of TIE gold; only the normal version, the seperate add-ons, and the CD collecter's edition. There was also a remake make of the game using the x-wing versus TIE fighter engine; the collecter's series.

The original game ended with you saving the Emperor and him giving you the fancy medal; then each add-on was 2 campaigns, IIRC.

Aha... It could have been Collectors Edition... I don't remember now. But I do remember the game being at least 12 campaigns long, 6 until the Emperor gave the medal and another 6 where you hunted Zaarin for the most part, or rather defended against his attacks.

The collectors series? Ohhh... That would be nice, I would love to go on another killingspree, I mean a pilot that bags what amounts to the entire rebel fleet plus a couple of Imperial fleets all with fighters, he is serious.
