I have not noticed this before 1.2, but for the last 3 campaigns (one of them Macedonian) Cyrene always switch to Macedonian control sometime after 200 BC. Is this another bug or an intended rebellion or what?

That seems to happen to me every campaign as well...I think it is an intentional bug.

Dig threw the descp_start text file. Scroll threw the start settlements of each faction. They all have a founder attribute. Like Ancyra in Galatia is founded by the Gauls, Cyrene is founded by Macedonia. This means if either rebels against their current owners that there is a chance the rebellion will give control to the founding faction if they are still around. This means that if Cyrene rebels (usually vs Egypt) that Macedon can end up with. Same with Ancyra if they rebel the Gauls could suddenly end up with a province in Asia minor.

...weird, to say the least. Though I won't say having a foothold in a different region isn't useful :-) Gauls in Asia minor expanding into Pontus while those to the west are still engaged in life-and-death struggle with Rome... imagine that, eh? At least you've got a backup region to escape to like Argentina was to the Nazis after Germany's defeat. Fascinating, is history.

You know, for some odd reason I can't find Ancyra or Galatia in the file, I can find the army (all those nice fanatics) though. When I search either they don't pop up.
But even more odd, the game doesn't mind. ~

Well since at the very start Ancyra is just a villiage it's entery is probably small, and the slave factions has about 25 provinces at the start so it'd easy to miss. But I usually scroll threw the file to make any changes.

When I, the mighty brutii, noticed that little thingy down there, I thought: How convenient, I get a foothold in Northern Africa, without having to declare war on anyone I havent killed yet! But with me, the Macedon Cyrene came much earlier, around 225 BC. (Presently shipping troops from Cyrene east... to fight guess who... ~D )

It is more likely that it was the Numidians that lost it.
They are notoriously low on troops always, and so a small no-good city like Cyrene will get the axe in terms of troops. Btw, it is far from the only city the Numidians or the Egyptians lose frequently, both Lepcis Magna and Alexandria (GAH!) is lost now and then.

lars, I know for sure that there is no entry in the file called Ancyra or Galatia (there is a Galatia with regards to the army but not the city). You can actually search the file for those words. It is very odd in my mind.

Maybe a settlement that starts out as a villiage doesn't get an entry. Who knows, but now it seems I'll have to digging threw the strat file to see if I can't find Ancyra. BTW Kraxis what are you gonna do if I can find an entry for Ancyra?

Thanks for your input, guys. It still sounds weird that a town like Cyrene should rebel against fellow Africans and switch to a greek faction. Interesting...

Since obviously the game works (with reservations as there are oddities) without Ancyra in my game I won't be doing anything. But perhaps I would just copy your part over into my file and see if that does anything.

I am sure the Gauls did not have a town in Asia Minor, but does anyone know if the Macedonians ever made it as far as Cyrene?

Well, the Galatians (a Celtic people) got in Asia Minor around 280 BC, being ousted from Greece. Hence 'Galatia'. The word Galatia is related to the word Gaul, as are other words like Galicia, Wales and Wallonia. All indicate Gallic (more properly; Celtic) habitation.

I just found this website about Cyrene:
http://www.livius.org/ct-cz/cyrenaica/cyrenaica.html
It seems that Cyrene was founded as a colony of the Greek island of Thera in 630 BC. Alexander the Great conquered it along with the rest of Egypt, of which it was by then part. After his death it became part of the kingdom of the Ptolemies, but by 282 BC its king allied with the Seleucids and broke away from the Ptolemies. Somewhere after 250 BC the Ptolemies got it back. In 163 BC it became an Roman protectorate until 145, when it's breakaway governor became king Ptolemy VIII of Egypt. After 96 BC, when the last king of Cyrene died, he left it to the Romans, who made it a province 18 years later.

Apart from Alexander the Great himself, I don't see a Macedonian connection. But at least it was a Greek town.

Thanks for the link, a lot of interesting information.

Please reference this link to view some background on the history of Macedon's influence in Cyrene, I posted this article myself to TWC.

Very cool... I've learnt quite a bit from this forum. I knew about Ancyra, but not about Cyrene. Ancyra isn't to be found in descr_strat, however, it is in the descr_regions and settlements file, as well as in some other files whose names I cannot recall that contain the x-y coordinates of settlements, so perhaps that's why the game doesn't seem to mind it missing from descr_strat.

Yes, but then one wonders how the game can be certain that there is going to be a village with 400 (or is it 800) inhabitants.
