Vanishing soldiers

Defending against a Macedonian assault, I had a few ballista units punting straight down a road at the advancing phalanxes - some principes off to the side to stall the Macedonian mass. All was proceeding swimmingly, people with dodgy hats were being impaled and flung all over the shop. I looked away for a minute, then back again - and all but two men, out of the 45 initial crew were left - the rest had vanished. No enemy activity in the vicinity, no dead bodies. However, some of the machines were missing too.

I consequently lost.

Looking at the score-sheet afterwards, it didn't say they'd died either - all the ballista units were listed as having fully survived (except the unit that had 2 men left - those 2 got nastily poked by some vicous Macedonians with pointy things)

Anyone else had anything similar happen?

Though, I doubt that's the cause (maybe the larger sized arty units...)
