Silly question, perhaps, but is there any way to give the six factions that make up the "barbarian" culture group the ability to reach huge cities, build epic walls, and all the other good stuff they are currently denied?

Yes -

in export_descr_buildings.txt (/rome - total war/data/), you add

barbarian,

to the list of

requires factions { FACTION_NAMES, }

for each level of the buildings that you want them to be able to build.

Make sure to put the correct units udner each building's build list, because units are not automatically trainable by higher level buildigns in the chain.

Thank you! Actually, however, I was referring to the apparant problem of barbarian factions not being able to rise above 3 city levels.

What I mean is, barbarian towns can only reach: village, town, and large_town, whereas other cultures can rise to city and large_city.

I should have removed the walls from the question, I apologize - how can we enable barbarians to reach large_city?

add - barbarian, - to the next levels of the core_building entry

Though you might also need to add city plans for the barbarians, for large city and huge city.

I checked, and it does seem to be necesary to change something other than just expor_descr_buildings.txt

I played as germans, after giving myself a city and 12050 population to start with, and I could not build past the 'minor city' level'.

I think that you should find the settlement plans (they are in the packs, I believe), and copy one of the other culture type's plans for large_city and huge_city into the appropriate folder, and rename them with BARBARIAN instead of whatever the previous culture was. Then I would expect that you will be able to have large and huge cities as barbarian factions.

take a look at the descr_sm_settlements.txt. i dont have time to get into an explanation of what to do. hopefully that will get you started.

Yes, you have to add settlements models to the descr_sm_settlements file, and perhaps edit the UI_1 packs. I've managed to have the barbarian culture reaching the large city level for Diadochi TW but I've edited everything so they look like greeks.
