With all the negative things said about RTW and the loving sighs about games past, I thought I'd get out Shogun again and try and decide what I really loved about Shogun and miss in RTW. So I played a campaign and....

In order of merit- top first.

1. I find RTW with heaps of provinces and ability to build everthing everywhere somewhat tedious. In Shogun you had to choose carefully as $ was scarce and only a few provinces could be upgraded. This brings real strategy to the human player, I'd like RTW to make it much harder to develop everything everywhere.

2.Shinobi/spies , yes they are fun to make revolts in your opponents provinces etc,; with a little modification to stop abuses I think they could be made more usable in the RTW setting. I don't think subversion is well done in RTW, possible but too complicated and longwinded to bother about as a real strategy.

3.Ahh my favorite , getting nailed by the AI's Legendary Geishas and scrabbling to survive those black hearted b's. No real comparison in RTW.

4.Battle Maps, IMO more varied and interesting landscapes, particularly mountains/valley to trap the unwary , and no giant trees.

5. I also loved musketeers, or rather being able to get novel technology. Slightly off topic, I wonder if a Civ3 approach to getting some of the technologies (and trading them) might work.
