Hey All, This is my first post ever. Been lurking in the shadows for over a year, and mighty happy finally to be an official part of things. I've learned a lot from these discussions; this site has made my experience with the TW series an even better one. In fact, sad to say, I almost enjoy looking through these different threads as much as playing the game (clearly, I'm out of control with this game!). I'm ruggedly committed to MTW:VI, though I did purchase RTW and played it for a while. Been experimenting with mods for a while now... Love XL. I'd like to try Hellenic Total War but I can't figure out how to install a fresh new version of MTW:VI... Am I overlooking the obvious (as I've so often done with this game!)? Any help will be much appreciated. Cheers, Dub

Hehe I had the same touble myself. I now have three versions installed on my PC, on for Basic MTW for online, one for Basic MTW:VI Online and one for the XL Mod. :dizzy2:

What you do is:-

1.) Re/install MTW but when it specifies the folder rename it something like MTW:for Hellenic, it should still install in the Medieval folder in your program files;

2.) then install MTW:VI and when it tries to find a copy of MTW browse your self and find the one you installed in step 1.), install it over that (you can rename this one aswell, maybe, dunno =/ )

3.) now install the hellenic mod on the one installed in step 2.)

A bit long but that's how I got XL Mod installed onto a seperate version to the others. Even though I didn't really need to. But at least I have vanilla (albeit patched) versions of them now, just in case.

If you want to have several mods installed (and you have a large harddisk), you can first install a clean MTW:VI + patch, then rename the folder to e.g. "C:\Program Files\Total War\Clean game". Then each time you want to fool around with a new mod, simply make a copy of the clean game folder, and install the mod to that. It's a bit faster than installing a new game everytime.

is it possible to save a mod to a disk or flash drive or cd and then use it on another computer that has MTW (that isnt hooked up to the net)?

Sorry dont understand the question.

If you are asking can you save a mod to some form of media - ie Disk then the answer is yes.

If you are also asking can you then install that mod onto another machine that is not linked to the web, then yes again.

Not sure if anybody's revisiting this thread anymore, but especially for those who may have the same original question I did, here's the update. I followed BAD's and mikkele's advice about reinstalling, etc., and everything seems to work fine. Given my lack of computer savvy, I botched things several times, but after all is said and done...
(i) I got rid of all old MTW files on my computer (didn't have to do this, as it turns out, but "live and learn"), then
(ii) re-installed MTW, re-installed Viking Invasion, patched it up via 2.01 patch, then
(iii) simply did a copy of that entire folder 3 separate times, each time renaming it (once to "Hellenic Total War", once to "NTW" cuz I've also downloaded the VERY interesting Napoleonic mod, and once to "XL" -- the mod I play most often these days); I was interested to note that when I renamed a copied folder the computer didn't warn me that "renaming this folder might make the original program not work", then
(iv) whenever I want to play something other than the clean game I go into the particular folder itself and open the game manually by double-clicking on the black/white/red Medieval - Total War icon lurking amongst all the other game files... Took me a while to figure this out, I'm afraid, but got there all the same.
Anyway, thanks to everybody who helped out! Now if I could only get the HTW mod not to CTD whenever it goes to the battle map...

Hi Dub...

Easier still, instead of going into the game folder each time you want to start a game, make a copy of each of the different game icons, rename them to whatever you have named the game, then drag to your desktop.
Then all you have to do is double left click the icon on your desktop and the game will open.
It means you will have a few icons 1/Hellenic TW 2/NTW 3/XL

I have 7 icons for games.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tip, JK. I had no idea about that... Makes me wonder how my save game list would look... Would a saved game from NTW, for example, show up next to a save game from a vanilla MTW campaign? That is, I wonder what the relationship is between the MTW icon (program starter?) and the rest of the files in the folder... (Alas, so many questions, so little time: I really don't know squat about programming and such...) Also makes me appreciate the importance of my MTW:VI CD: what in the world will I do if it should ever not work? Total War withdrawal must be a very unpleasant sickness...hope I never experience it. ~;)

Since each folder (MTW "clean", NTW, XL, etc.) has its own "saved games" sub-folder, whatever games you save while playing that mod should go into that mod's saved games with no mixing. Be careful about moving saved games around between the mods, however. They'll likely cause a crash if you try to open, say, an XL game in NTW.
