Sprites are used to view units from a long way off. There are 4 levels of detail for models, which reduce detail as you view them from distance. After you move out of viewing range for the lowest detail model, they switch over to sprites. It's old style MTW and STW technology, but it's perfectly adequate for long distance views ~:D
