I'd always thought Alans were strictly mercenary, but looking at the Clan Berserk unit tool makes me wonder. It says "Byzantine, Golden Horde, Russian and Turkish" factions can build them (at least, I think that's what it means) in any period, but that "++Georgia,Khazar++" are "required".

I'm playing the Byz for the first time, and started with a unit of Alans. I've only 3 of them left, so I'd like to reinforce them. Is there any way I can?

Not unless you mod the game (you have to put in building requirements in the unit production file).

You can hire them, and the factions shown are IIRC the ones who can buy them in MP/Custom Battle games.

Thanks, mfberg. I always wondered why there were 2 "faction" entries in that tool, but why are Georgia and Khazar designated as requirements, I wonder? Any ideas?

It may be that Georgia and Khazar are where they are most likely to turn up if you build Inns there. I know in the original MTW, Almughavars were very rare, and most commonly turned up in Inns built in Aragon. I'm not sure this is still the case with VI.

The Byzantine, Golden Horde, Russian and Turkish factions can use Alan Mercenary Cavalry in VI multiplayer (and in a SP Custom Battle, I'm pretty sure), so that may be to what the Unit Master tool is referring.

They are the two provinces that Alans will turn up in originally. If you disband the Alan I don't know whether they go back to the Georgia/Khazar mercenary pool or if they are just moved to the "nearest" pool like all the other units.
