View Full Version : Churches don't increase morale?

Since recently discovering the function of the F1 key in battle (using VI, I'm not sure if it does the same thing in plain old MTW), I've noticed something odd. The stats shown for a unit reflect armor and weapon upgrades as well as valour bonuses, but the church/mosque/etc morale boost doesn't appear. Are churches broken? Does a cathedral not actually grant the +3 morale bonus it says it does?
There are two entries in the unit prod file for morale, "morale bonus" (column 19) and "honour level" (column 41 -- these column numbers come from GnomeEditor). As far as I've been able to tell, units use the "honour level" for their morale and completely ignore "morale bonus." I'm wondering if the bonus from religious buildings increases their "morale bonus," thus having no actual effect in battle whatsoever.
Any thoughts? Am I wrong or do units receive no benefit from religious buildings?
I'm not as familiar with the inside numbers as a lot of players, so feel free to take what I say with a grain of salt (at least until someone more knowledgable backs me up). What I've seen in earliers threads is that a unit's morale is based primarily on its valour level, as you've already guessed. However, morale bonuses granted by religious and governmental buildings still stack on top of a unit's base morale. How this actually shows up in the number columns, though, I'm not sure.

Where church morale bonuses are concerned:
1. I've seen no significant difference in battle performance between a unit produced in a region with a cathedral and the same unit produced in a region with no religious buildings. Since you can only give a unit a building-related morale bonus in a campaign, I don't know any easy way to create a controlled experiment to test whether the church bonus actually works. If someone wants to put some serious effort into such a test, go ahead and let me/us/whatever know how it goes (maybe create a dummy campaign with very controlled settings, like very limited building and unit prod files and so forth -- give the player the ability to build churches but not the AI faction(s) -- etc).
2. When you press F1 during a battle, you'll see a screen appear listing the number of men, valour, attack, defense, armour, and morale for each unit in your army on the battlefield. You'll notice that valour bonuses increase the attack, defense, and *morale* values, as should be expected. You'll also notice that weapon and armour upgrades are figured into the unit stats (for example, a gold weapon feudal men-at-arms unit will show an attack rating of 7 while a normal one will have 3 attack). I do not, however, see an increase in morale for a unit produced in a region with a cathedral, which strikes me as a little strange considering the building supposedly grants a +3 bonus and both weapon and armour upgrades appear as indicated.
