I was reading a letters page in a history magazine recently and one reader commented on a possible nuclear strike in 1983 as a result of American military activity (can't remember the name of the operation). The Soviets apparently thought it was the cover for a US nuclear attack. I was wondering if anyone knew any more about it?

I was wondering if anyone knew any more about it?U.S. jets flying deliberately over Kamchatka and other Russian territory in the East on Reagan's orders as part of the new American 'projection of power' strategy in the region. Rumour has it that a South Korean passenger plane was downed in revenge, and there were some high-level diplomatic confrontations that put an end to this risky strategy.

So they were just testing the Russians resolve?
