View Full Version : Beirut is a bonehead!

Oh man. I fell for a salesman's pitch and I got taken. What a shmuck is me.

We kill a few trees north of where I live, then head back to our yard. On the way we gas up. At the depaneur (Quebec convenience store/gas station), while we're having our coffee, this slick dude in a big white Yukon pulls up and tells us he's bringing speakers up to his boss's store up north, but they over stocked his truck by four boxes, no one knows, so he's trying to off them for cash before he gets to the store. Make a little pocket money.

He shows me a 2004 catalog that lists these 5.1 surround sound speakers, Theater Research TR-8200, at about $2000. He says he'll let me have a set for $600. Ya sure, I'm covered in dirt, sweat, and sawdust and I've got $600 on me. Anyway, I tell him I've got $60 on me and that's that. Piss off. In the end, the guy I'm working with says out loud that he has about $250 on him and will pass it to me. When the guy hears this he lowers the price to $300.

I checked the box, nice looking speakers, heavy enough, very heavy subwoofer. Seemed like a good deal. How bad could it be for $300? So I bought them.

I bring the box home, didn't want them crashing around in the back of the work truck. I check the Net for prices and the first thing I see is a forum talking about people selling these speakers out of the back of white trucks saying they're worth $2000 when they're worth about, well, $300-$400 depending on who you talk too. Can you believe it!

I'm a skeptic by nature but I bit hook, line and sinker. What a shmoo! I think I at least got my money's worth but I sure as shoot didn't get $2000 speakers for $300. Oh well.

What I did get was his license number and in a few days I'm going to narck this SOB out for some heinous activity ("Yeah, I saw a white Yukon, license ######## parked in front of the school with this guy talking to little kids...) and get his ass stopped by John Law. Let them have a crack at him.

Anyway, lesson learned. I'll post some pics of my new speakers after dinner.

Beirut, as the title says, is a bonehead! Must be karma.

Hey Beirut I have some computer parts you could have for $1000. They usually go for more, they have not been messed with and are only a year old.

The truth: I bought them a year ago, but they were already outdated. Worth: 300-500, used.

Yep. It's Ok. I'm stewpid and eye no it. :goofy: Rub it in. Rub it in.

Oh well, I feel so bad I think I'm going to finish this shot of Bushmills 10 year old single malt and go crawl into a nice big warm bed with my woman. :kiss2:

Life goes on.

(And I'll bet my flight sims will sound good through these doorknob speakers anyway. 5.1 computer sound here I come!)

pretty smooth line though.

You've got to wonder at these guys. I mean, to work this scam, he has to drive around petrol stations, find guys who might want to buy stuff off the back of a truck, and who actually have enough cash on them to be worth scamming, sell them the line, and then sell them $300 speakers for $300. (yeah, OK, I know they will be hot, but he's still going to have paid SOMETHING for them).

For gods sake wouldn't it be less effort for these guys just to work for a living?

They do work, they work at the distribution. It happens a lot that they get more then they ordered, so the employees sell it this way. Because it happens so often the scam worked on Beirut, most of the time you get quality stuff. I bought a complete Bose surround set this way for 200 guilders.

Well, the guy had guts. He was alone and he pulled his scam on two fair sized guys in Ford F350 full of chainsaws. And we didn't just look like we could and would kill him - we looked like we'd eat him after as well. But, all that obviously isn't worth a tinker's cuss because he has my money.

The karma part is that even though I didn't really think they were hot, I'm not sure I cared. So how upset can I be with him? It's really my fault for having mediocre morals.

No. Because three or four boneheads like me and he has good cash for the day. A couple of hundred maybe. To make $150 - $200 a day, I have to work. As in sweat and effort and aches and pains. I would love to put that slick and slimy salesman to work with us for a day just to listen to him complain and watch him sweat.

Different meaning here in N.America. Just means 'thick-skulled' here. ~:)

Maybe I should share my story of getting hoodwinked in Tijuana for a 'genuine' Persian rug, before I learned about Mexican haggling procedures.
