ya know... i wanted to give RTW another chance. i really did. so last weekend i decided to fire up a nice RTR campaign i had going into 240bc but which i had stopped playing out of frustration at the bugs. since i somehow can't hibernate (freezes up when i try with RTW running in the background), and can only leave the computer constantly turned on with RTW in background for a couple days at a time, i nonetheless tried my best to get in some marathon sessions - to try and reduce the effect of the loadgame bug. well, especially in the midgame with all the tons of micromanagement i like to do, i can only play about 2-3 turns within the hour sitting i try at each interval. i then leave RTW running in the background and come back to it later. yet compounding the inherent issue of longer turns during the mid-to-lategame, the longer i have the system on, the more likely one of the many in-game actions i take will eventually cause a CTD. looks like i rarely ever hit the desired 5-turn mark (the proven/tested length of consecutive turns for minimal adverse effects from loadgame bug).

thinking maybe it was an RTR issue, i decided to load up an old vanilla campaign. same problem.

my windows is all updated, audio and video drivers are pretty recent. very little is running in the background. even tried disabling my anti-virus.

the game technically runs fine until the occasional CTD. the problem is, that during the mid-game, turns take longer. therefore i end up playing fewer turns before i must either turn off the computer/close RTW to do other work, or the game CTD's.

none of this would really be an issue for me if the savegame/loadgame "issue" didn't exist...

I have a problem somewhat like yours, I'm not the only one who uses this computer and it is just not possible to keep RTW running long enough to deal with good'ole Save/load.

Oh well, maybe i'll just put up with it or buy MTW.

Are paths that lead to hours of fun,
Of interesting battles;
But ‘tis my firm conviction,
Whatever tales they tell,
That beyond the reload
All paths lead straight to Save/load!"

guess where that came from ~:)

No, it was just a rip off of this:http://www.angelfire.com/tx/CZAngelsSpace/JSGilbert.html

Of purest virgin gold;
But ‘tis my firm conviction,

That beyond the Chagres River
All paths lead straight to hell!

Strange. I've found RTW to be very stable so I can just alt-tab and let it sit there. I've had a very occasional glitch trying to go back to the game that I think is related to the sound card drivers or the hibernate/sleep mode.
