Okay.

I have been playing with the idea of making a little mod, mostly for my own enjoyment. So I've started to look at the modding tuts and guides and what not. The problem is that I feel that I am missing things.

I plan to search for most of this stuff on my own, so I'm only trying to get help on making sure I look for everything.

The following are the features of the mod that I plan to change from vanilla RTW.

New map
New factions
New character names (i.e. a list of names that get associated with a certain faction when a new family member is born)
New Culture (is this even possible?)
Some altered units (just stats and unit names, not models)
different allocation of some units amongst factions (i.e. moving gaulish warbands to be Roman foot soldiers)

Basically I want to know what things have to be looked at for each of those. I don't want to start changing some files and then realize that I screwed up because I didn't edit a second file. Any help on what files are tied to each of those things would be great. I have found the information for the new map already and think I have that under control, but the others I'm still looking.

Thanks for any help in advance.

p.s. I'm only running version 1.0 (and to be honest it's a cracked version from a friend, but I plan to buy the whole game this week). Do i have to upgrade to 1.2 for the modding to be successful?

For editing the campaign map, read this guide:
https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=39456

Its not possible to edit cultures...

For editing unit stats I recomment this editor:

Sorry for the brevity of my reply, if you have questions don't hesitate to ask. Welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the reply, o eyeless one.

Can anyone point to to the files that are used to get the names when a new character is created/born/recruited?

Male FM's
Female FM's
Surnames
Man of the Hour
Captains
Agents

Those are the only character types that I can think of. Are their any more that would get specific names?

trendel, this a guide which has been missing from these forums, so I wrote one. Here:

Its at the bottom of the list on the first post
