I posted this in the Colosseum for a reason, so that people who don't check the mod forums would see it. How am I supposed to make the general membership aware of things when they don't check the mod forums? I can't even direct people to another area?

You know, some people don't even know what mods are, and what they can do. How are they supposed to become aware of them if even pointers to information are moved?

If everyone posted pointers to info in the wrong forum, that would rather defeat the purpose of having separate forums in the first place, don't you think? True, nobody but fans of EB will actually see your update, but that's the natural result of a separate-forums system. We could have a system where all posts are made in one central forum, but that would obviously be far more trouble than it's worth. And yes, that's a false dichotomy, but the tragedy of the commons exists and should be stopped even if not everyone parks too many cows there.

Of course, all that begs the question of why the thread was moved from the Colosseum to the General modding board, rather than your simply being asked not to do it again—if you're going to stop people from posting about new developments in their mod in non-modding boards, surely it's only makes sense to stop them from posting such things outside of the board specific to their mod?

can we atleast post mod release announcements in the general forum ? Like khevlan said, some people dont know what mods are and others don't even check the modding forums.

Not only that, but other mods don't see what has been already achieved! There are some bright modders out there, but the number of times I have seen mods embark on redundant work (models, animations) or ask already answered queries about the RTW engine, it’s driving me NUTS! Perhaps I’m to easily excited :-P

Perhaps we should encourage more people to wander over to the hosted modifications sub forums more often...

True, but I think that it would be better to just link to your mod in your signature. Surely everyone's already noticed all these bazillions of people wandering around with EB icons in their signature. More specific messages could be included, too, like the most impressive Baktrian screenshot (cropped, hopefully) in your signature linking to the preview or something. In my personal opinion, posting updates in unrelated forums isn't the way to go.

Sorry, I don't see the conflict here. I thought the "modding subforum" was for modders and for the discussion of modding. Players don't come here, and shouldn't, they don't find much to interest them here. I don't see why the "single player" discussion shouldn't include discussion of mods by the players.

Over-modification has negative implications just as no modification does. You can't, and shouldn't pigeonhole everything.

Modders should not put mod advertisements in the single-players sections. Some players do not know what a mod is and it would only confuse them. If people do know what a mod is then they are bound to search for the modding section eventually. If the Hosted Mods section is hidden too far, then why don't you suggest to Tosa to move it to a more visible place?

And once EB starts promoting its development (not even a release) in SP then what would stop others to promote their mod? Before you know it the SP forum is filled with mod announcements that spark little discussion (they rarely have). I doubt that that would be a good move.

Cheers,
Rob

that's why I asked if release announcements can be posted there. Mod newsposts can be made like every week, but release posts are something that happens every so many months. It would be a chance to reach those who don't have clue about the modding scene.

Ask for it in the Watch Tower subforum. I think it would be allowed with moderation.

I certainly don't think the Collosseum should be turned into a mod advertisement area. I think I posted two messages about EB since we got our own subforum, this being the second. Given that we've had a subforum for 6 months or so, I consider that very little to ask of the readership.

It would be nice to have a sticky in the Collosseum as to "what is a mod?" It should educate players. I know that I was blissfully unaware of many modded games before I ran into my first "mod," and after that I became a mod addict. Having something in the standard player forum will help.

Just a thought.

The current forum descriptions as detailed in the Entry Hall say that the Mod General forum should be used for mod advertisements.

That being said, once the excitement of the expansion pack has died down the only way the RTW community will continue to grow or even to sustain itself is to have either a thriving multiplayer community or a thriving mod community (and preferably both). Players who stick with vanilla SP will ultimately drift away - probably sooner rather than later - and so its in everyone's benefits to develop their interest in these other ways to enjoy the game.

For news, I personally think it should be a matter of who the target audience is - stuff which is intended to be read by single players should go into the Colosseum, stuff intended to be read by multiplayers should go in Campus Martius and stuff intended to be read by modders (which would include the majority of mod announcements, short of major releases) should go in the modding forums.

But either way, this is essentially a discussion about Org policy which should take place in the Watchtower.
